Title: HW97/HW77 which caliber to choose
Post by: TOM aka critter99 on October 20, 2011, 05:33:24 PM
Looking for an underlever...and was leaning toward the 20 caliber version.   Hoping the thumbhole stainless version shows up in 20 cal in next shipment.....if not I will have to decide between .177 and .22

Don't know how much credibility this lends to the .20 cal but... Dr. Beeman was always big proponent of it being the flatter shooting, more efficient combo of pellet weight and good ballistics, vs. the .177 and .22 cal. Pretty much the "gap filler" between light and fast and the heavy/slow. Only downside is local availability, almost always an on-line purchase for the good pellets.

.20 may be the best of the bunch Tom, especially in an HW97K...thhhwaaack!

Their all good in this gun! I love the .20 but my .22cal and .177cal gun will shoot just as tight as Bart's group at 30yds with the .177cal the tightest due to it being the smallest cal, but I find myself shooting my .22cal the most because its so smooth! :P

Even if you go with a .177 one thing I like on the 97's is the barrel is high in the breech. Makes it very easy loading even with small pellets.

I really want the new syn thumbhole stock....I am holding off to see if next shipment brings it in as a 20 caliber....If not I am still up in the air over .177 versus .22.....

Hi,

Even in the strong 77-97 version, generally in Europe it is felt that .22 is too much for such a small action (apart from legal power limit considerations). It would max out at 17 ftlbs of energy. Killing power of .20 is hardly better than .177. Famous UK tuners V-Mach do not hold very much of caliber .20 but I would think it is better in the 77/97 than .22 because of its external ballistics. I would not be against experimenting with a 97 in .20. Although there are not many pellets to choose from and over here as expensive as .22.

Hope this helps,

Hendrick

I have sleeve of JSB 20 cals as I am in on the CCA 20 cal Diana 34 special build.  So pellets are readily available.  Actually I paid no more for them then I did JSB 22 cal 15.9 Gr...but I did buy an entire sleeve at a time
