Has anyone done or seen an comparison between a DonnyFl Ronin or their Emperor LDC on the MAX?
I have to tame it down and they are both expensive.

Are you making it quiet for yourself or to not disturb others?

I need to quiet it down for both, I have a hearing aid which amplifies that frequency and makes it louder.

I think the emperor will suit your needs if you attach it to the shroud, which is an additional cost in adapters for sure. With the Emperor mounted you will have almost zero recoil and the gun will be backyard friendly.

I have the 357 hp max and I bought the Ronin for it in hopes it would quieten it down a good bit.. unfortunately it made very little difference at all, I ended up having to order the 6inch hollow extension to couple with the Ronin which when used together does keep noise at an ear friendly level..
So my advice would be to go with the emperor because I was rather disappointed with the Ronin alone.

There is not shroud on the barrel at all, it's just a straight 13" barrel with a thread protector on it.

Thanks, I almost purchased the Ronin because of the cost difference, but I have to find a review on the Emperor
before I spend $240 on a whim.

I have been experimenting with air stripper mods on the 45 Challenger using this ebay muzzle brake.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/114375622263 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/114375622263)
It does change the noise levels some as it pitches the sound away as it strips the air. Buying the 1/2-28 version leaves enough metal to be drilled and tapped for M18-1 pitch threads and the front opened up to 1/2" to allow the .457 slug past. Machining two stacked together permanently is more effective, and just one was better than nothing.
I have a sketched design of a moderator that has a tube drilled similar to this muzzle brake that strips the air along the whole length inside of a hollow "can" that I am sending off to Donny to make, and hopefully integrated into several caliber's of moderator cans. The idea is his to mass produce from there.

Emperor.

I’ve been working on trying to quiet my 357 max as well and I will watch this thread.
I got a slightly longer AEA shroud and the metal baffles they use in their guns. Adds about 5” to OAL and basically just takes the edge off, and still painful on the ears.
I also have a 1.5” x 8” can and put three uneven chambers in it. screwed into the stock shroud I can shoot in the garage (large open space so sound dissipates) without feeling a need for ear protection. Combined with the longer shroud and baffles it is somewhat more quiet but still pretty loud.
Next up to test will be a full stack of small baffles in the 8” tube to see how it fares compared to the three empty chambers.

Wow I sighted mine in and they are LOUD!!!!!!!!!! only took four shots with that old leapers scope to dial it in.

Thanks for the correction, I thought it had a shroud like a Challenger or the .357 HP Max.

Also didn’t realize it wasn’t shrouded in the higher calibers
One big factor in noise level that I’m having is the fact that there’s quite a bit of hammer balance right now at the stock tune. Getting like 3 shots from 3600 down to 2600 psi, after that it stops bouncing, becomes much quieter and uses much less air.
I wish there was someway to get rid of the bounce without cutting coils off the spring or decreasing fill pressure.

DJ I wish they were shrouded, with baffles, that tank that's on them ain't no light weight tank either, the gun by itself probably weighs at least a pound more than my AEA 25 cal semi auto. Skimping on the tank would make a lot less shots, the way they are you get about 6 good shots from 4K down on a cliff. All I can say is they're flat out a beast of an airgun for sure.

When I received the MAX yesterday, I made a mistake by test firing it my garage and my ears are still ringing.

Bob are you planning on casting BBT's for it? If you are I think you'll be happy how they shoot from it.

Wayne, I ordered the same NOE mold that you have at the same time that I ordered the MAX.
I did find about a dozen 458-340's, together some powder coated one's, that I casted with a LEE mold a few years back.
I'm hoping to test the MAX with them tomorrow, by hand feeding them.

In case anyone is working on their own ldc’s for the max I got a good result after a fair number of unimpressive tests of various spacers and baffles in a 1.5” x 8” metal can.
I just tried using a very heavy spring I found at ace (about 1.25” diameter, 4” long, 3 mm wire I estimate) as a spacer between my first and second baffles, followed by a chamber and more baffles. the first baffle is hit hard by the air burst, and the spring compresses, baffle moving like a piston. Before adding some krytox I could hear the spring/baffle shifting forwards and backwards with each shot.
I may try wrapping the spring in felt or something but I think using it as a kind of kinetic energy shock absorber works well enough. I don’t know if this is as quiet as some of you might want but it’s tolerable on the ears in my garage.

I just ordered a custom LDC from Neil Clague for my 45 MAX, after a few email exchanges.
It will be 2" x 8" and designed for ~300 FPE, I should be getting it in a couple of weeks.
In the mean time I will be using ear muffs.

Bob I used the tactical soft case transporting mine, it's the same case that I use for my AEA HP Semi Carbine. It's got the pouches on the side for carrying the mags etc.

How long is your case? I love the fact that these have a folding stock, light weight and short.
I dislike the idea of making it longer with a 8" LDC but I can't afford too loose any more hearing.
Too many air tools and fire burners without proper protection which resulted in a hearing lose
in one ear and Hearing Aid in the other. A lesson to be learned for you younger guys.

Bob it's 27" long and 12" tall and it's a great fit with a little room to spare, it's made by US PeaceKeeper

Wayne, that case is a perfect size. The MAX should fit diagonally with the 8" LDC.
I will look into the Peacekeeper case.

The LDC would fit in one of the pouches for sure.
