I have my guns muzzle pointed at my paper target and curious what is the reason for it not hitting on paper regardless of iron sights or scopes? I adjust my iron sights and scopes using the 2+3 shot method. Any tips on what might be the problem?

You could start by telling us the size of the paper and the distance. Or you could do what I do when I don't have a clue what's going on. Start with a bigger target - perhaps two feet wide and four or more feet tall. Put a mark in the center and aim for it. This will tell you your point of impact relative to your point of aim. You can go from there to dial in your sights, scope, or whatever.

What Thomas said.
Either you are too far away or your paper you are shooting at is too small. LOL or both.
To begin with, if it's a scope, I'll center the scope's reticle mechanically and/or optically. With iron sights I start with them at the lowest possible position and centered.
I start at 10 yards, then after I have established where it is hitting on paper I'll make adjustments accordingly. Many times at this point I'll try different pellets to see which gives the tightest grouping. I'll then move the target back to the distance I want to zero the gun at. Occasionally I may stop midway and shoot a couple just for verification.

Start at 5-10 yds and keep extending the distance, adjusting as needed.
Also, make sure your target background doesn’t promote ricochets. Eye protection is always advised.

Like said at 10y/m. Hang a large cardboard . I use like foot and a half x foot and a half +/-
Put a one inch bullseye in the center. I prefer 6oclock hold . Hold at the bottom or center of bullseye.
Shoot 2 shots. If you dont hit that somewhere somethinhs bad wrong. If you hit then adjust as needed i prefer to do the elevation or windage depending on what one is worse off first shoot then do the next .
Now. Like pellets used .. like dasiy pointed..
There allover the place no matter in my guns ovet 600 fps. Then o kust got some crosman cphp that were sad with up to 7" flyers at 20y.
Ya, that bad. 3 of 5 tims like that the other 2 tins shot great.. go figure bad batch? It was to the point they missed everything and i jad to hang a large cardboard. To check what was going on with them..

Might help us help you what gun is in question ? Worst I have seen was a break barrel that someone had let the barrel snap up while trying to cock, that bent the barrel up, and it was shooting 2 ft high at 10 yards, with scope adjusted to its max.

Yep, stand closer to start with Andy.
Hard to adjust your sights or scope if you don't know which way to go.
Once you know where you are hitting, then you can start extending the yardage. ;)
What is you gun?
Maybe you are expecting too much for just starting out?

Super dumb question but one that hasn't been asked yet, are the pellets coming out of the barrel or does it sound strange like a muffled thump?
-
EXCELLENT POINT DAVID!
That never occurred to me.

OK if considering user error, I have grabbed the wrong cal. pellet and either had it slip down the barrel, or go way off target :-[

I bought a C1 that the barrel droop was so bad it was shooting well over a foot low at 10 yards.
Once I laid a straight edge on the barrel you could SEE it

Had a similar thing happen with my EdGun, though I dropped the gun on its scope and the adjustable mounts moved.
Start with moving the irons back to the center of their range. Then go like 10' and see where you are hitting. This is the same standard many of us use on anything we shoot, from airguns, powder, and bows. Start close and work back other wise you are just wasting time and money shooting blindly into the dirt

Do you literally mean point the barrel or aim with the sights? I don't know what the 2+3 method is. I know hope's not a method.
If I have a gun that's way off. Sitting at a bench with the gun across a bag, I put the sights or cross hair on something laying in the yard. Like a stick, bare patch of dirt or a can, lift my head to see where the pellet's going to hit, pull the trigger and see where the pellet splashes grass or dirt. Then I can make big half turn adjustments till it's close then normal zeroing with the sights.

I had this problem with a rifle with a really messed up sight.
After totally missing the target at 10 meters.
- I shot at 5 FEET from a target. At 5 feet, I couldn't miss the target. I aimed over the barrel, to make sure I hit the target. Then I adjusted the sight to the impact.
- Then I went out to 10 FEET, repeated and adjusted the sight again.
- That was good enough to put me on the paper at 10 meters.
So as others have said.
Pull in to a SHORT distance, so that you can make your initial sight adjustment. You can't adjust the sight if you can't see where you are hitting.
Then move the distance out to refine the sight adjustment.

How are you adjusting your sights if you're not hitting the paper???

Can someone please explain what the three plus two method is?
I have also heard of 4 plus 1 so it has to ve somethibg to do with a five shot group
