Well finally got around to finishing up the stock on my Ruger Air Mag. The checkering was a little messed up so I decided to try my hand at stippling. I used my Dremel with a diamond tip and a carbide cutter. Turned out pretty good for a first try. Did a quick buff up with 0000 steel wool then applied a couple coats of Tung Oil Finish. The stippling feels great in my hand and provides a real nice grip. Way more traction than the checkering ever had.
Have a look.

Looks good

It looks great.

I like that WAY more than checkering. I still like a smooth finish more, but i don't hunt outside of my yard, so no real need for added grip.
-
Nice work on that! looks great.

I would have loved a smooth stock on that but it wasn't an option. But now it really feels nice and the broken checkering is gone.

Great job Mike, she really looks great but I really like your back yard...:)
-
Nice work and a steady hand! Color inside the lines!
-
Thanks Gene, you should see it in the spring and winter. This time of year we have colors but in the spring the wild grass covers the whole yard and makes it a fantastic green. Of course winter is all white.

Man that looks good. Great first effort.
-
A real nice job Mike. You should be proud of that, especailly being the first time at it.

Cool looking Mike.Im working on a Benji and am about half done just not much time this week.I think the stippled stocks are a bit easier to hold and grip compared to checkering.I use a Dremel and a high speed drill that dentist use.I also use carbon paper so if i have another gun with some really nice checkering design i put the carbon paper on the gun upside down and trace it to paper and then to gun im working on.Get some neat designs from some guns that way too! I always like seeing the pics or any ideas others have to check out as i always have room for improvement! Nice pics!

That looks great, you might have a new carrear on gta :)....

Thanks guys. I might go back into it and hit the whole surface at an greater angle to remove some of those more rounded spots. I need to get a better tip for it too. the carbide cutter really isn't suited for this work and the diamond grinder I have is too small. So I need a larger diameter diamond tip and need to replace my flex extension for my dremel or at least get a new core drive for it. It gave out half way through the first panel so I had to handle the bulky Dremel body for most of the work.

You did an excellent job- looks great! :)
