Title: AEA HP Carbine FTK
Post by: customcutter on January 25, 2022, 11:26:03 AM
FTK failure to kill

After several days of setting up a bait station after something chewed a hole in our new pool screens.  I finally had a chance to take out the culprit last night.  I raised the gun and squeezed off the shot totally expecting a THUNK, WHACK, and DRT.

Instead I got a plunk, tink, and GENUS GIGANTUS RATTUS GRINNUS, slipped off into the night.

I couldn't figure out what happened it sounded like a Daisy Red Ryder BB hitting the fence below the intended target.

I investigated the AEA this morning wondering if there was a plenum that I didn't know about that had leaked down since last firing a few days earlier?  I decided to recock the gun and inserted the mag.  Fired the first shot and it sounded better but still not up to snuff.  Tried to fire a second round and click.  The semi-auto hadn't recocked.  I manually worked the bolt, and fired again.  Same thing, so I manually re-cocked, several more times until finally it was working as it should.

I checked the gauge when I started and it was on 25, when I ended it was at 23.  Then it dawned on me I had charged the gun with the YH for the first time yesterday, and noticed that the gauge turned to red at 30.  What I forgot was that MPA, not PSI so I had caused the gun to malfunction by over filling the CF bottle.  The 30MPA is the safety factor not the recommended fill pressure.  Lesson learned.

My YH came with a 6000 psi, 400 bar gauge.  I am not sure what the threads are.  Easier for me to make adjustments.

My Backpacker seems to want to shoot at higher pressures.  I am now filling to 3800 psi and mine shoots and actions fine.  This gives me more shots.  At 25 MPA you were a little over 3600 psi, AEA's recommended pressure for max pressure functioning.  You have an early gun?  I have read some will not function above 3250 psi.   Gauge on my gun also is in psi and the pump and rifle gauge correlate.   What gauge is on your rifle?

James,  I've only filled 2 other guns and my :45SCBA once from 3000-4200psi.  The gauge on the YH was not corresponding to what I was reading on my SCBA.  I think the YH is reading a little high on the gauge.  Yeah I did the calculation I think it was 3625 on the AEA gauge from 25MPa.

I bought the gun used from someone almost local.  So I don't know if it's a first gen, early model or what?  It very well may be, I know when I drove down to SE Fl to buy the gun and do an Iguana hunt that I shot 5-6 mags off of a single fill.  I was/am a happy camper getting that many shots in .25cal.  It has a CF .5L bottle and a DonnyFl moderator.  The hammer noise is the loudest thing about the gun. ;D

Just to clarify.  The guage on the compressor is in PSI, but not accurate.  The gauge on the gun is an AEA and in MPa.

When I purchased mine I talked to Bin at the PELLET SHOP about what pressure to fill.  He said 3800 psi.  You have to wonder what was done to allow the gun to shoot at a higher pressure.  Would a stiffer hammer spring change allow the gun to fire  and chamber at a higher pressure?   Makes me think maybe since your gun did not fire full throttle at the same time the action failed.

Anyway my AEA has become my favorite rifle.  I have 1500 rounds through it since end of November.  Trigger is my only complaint that should be addressed.  I have mine pulling at 2.75lb but it has some creep.  Only way I see to help with creep would be to shorten the happer side of sear.  I did remove some until it was smooth and them high polished, about .010.

James, I've only shot about 100 rds through mine.  About 60 at iguanas, the day I went and bought the gun. ;D  It took me almost 2 magazines to get used to the trigger pull.  I will eventually do a trigger job.  Too many irons in the fire right now.  If I need a heavier hammer spring to get higher pressure I will probably skip it as this one is hard enough to pull and seat a magazine.  I might look at a valve modification though if that's do-able.

It is my favorite of the 4 guns I own by far.  Semi-auto is just  8)

When I first received mine, I couldn't pull it back far enough to insert a magazine.  Called the Pellet Shop and he said it pulls hard and told me to try puttting my thumb behind the receiver and cock it that way.  Well it felt like it was coil binding to me so I tore it apart and sure enough there was a divot about half inch up on one end of the spring guide.  It also had a black oxide coating that felt rough to me so I filed the divot off and polished the rod.  It is still stiff but it is about a third easier to pull now, much easier.

Guns are well made but have some rough edges.  They are not polished like my AA or BSA rifles are but there is a lot of potential with these rifles.

Take care

Jim

Jim, thanks for the heads up on that.   8)  Yeah mine is hard to pull the last 1/4 to 1/3 of the pull.  I haven't been into it yet.  I want to polish/refine the trigger when I get a chance as it's about 5#, just a guess.  Manageable, but not like my other PCP's.
