Title: Clank! Clank! Clank! The noise of pumping the 362
Post by: jhrober on January 23, 2022, 11:55:29 AM
Great gun...  but pumping the 362 is kind'a noisy.
What are some clever ideas to quiet it down a bit?
Felt pad... Rubber stop... comes to mind.
Other ideas?

I have applied a couple pieces of rubber weather stripping but it needs more.  Maybe a piece of felt in the right spot...

Here's where I am so far and it really hasn't helped much with normal pumping. If I slow down at the end of the stroke and ease the pump handle down it makes a big difference though.

I filled the hollow forearm on my 2100 with Friendly Plastic.  Something similar is probably going to be necessary with the 362.

I usually put either the fuzzy side of velcro or 1/8" closed cell foam heat tape in there. I have yet to do anything with these yet.
#782 was a bear to open compared to #805, I removed the flat hunk of metal that the magnet sticks to. It made it much easier and that pump arm has yet to pop open.... then agan, I only pump the gun 5 times.
I might put the metal back on for something to stick the buffer to and try removing the magnet.

Very quiet  ;D

I have a stack of those somewhere, thanks for the post.

I tried a thin self adhesive closed cell weather-stripping foam, and it didn't do much. The noise from the pumping isn't too bad, till I pick up my Daisy 901, which I used to think was loud.

I use a strip cut from a bicycle inner tube CA’ed to the metal pump tube on my 1400’s and my 2100’s.  I also filled the hollow forearm on the 2100 to muffle the sound.  If I am going to hunt with this gun reducing the pumping noise is the first mod I’ll do.

I used that thin layer of foam that comes for packaging on the AEA guns, cut the right length/width strips and pack on both sides of the pump arm between the metal and plastic, it does help a lot.

I discovered the local Lowes is out of them. It's supposed to rain today. I'll continue my search of the local merchants after it stops. Sure hope I don't have to order from Amazon or Wally World just to get a couple of flat rubber washers.

I used strips of this inside the edges of the pump handle and on the magnet:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V5PR459?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V5PR459?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details)

It’s 1/8” thick EVA foam with an adhesive back.  No more clack.

It’s also great for rifles with high comb stocks as it’s warm in cold weather and non-slip.

I had placed a clear self stick soft plastic cabinet door bumper on the magnet of mine.  That helped a little so I added a second one on the plate the magnet sticks to.  That helped a bit more, but was still much too annoying for me.

Finally I grabbed a handful of the clear inserts for glass shelf clips from work.  My apologies as I do not remember who to give the credit to on that discovery, but I inserted two into the cocking arm where the plastic ribs are radiused around the tube.

This was much much better.

I had removed the two bumpers at the magnet and steel plate and surprise surprise the magnet is cracked in half.

My magnet is also cracked.  Easily replaceable via Amazon -but I think you have to buy 25 or 50 - typical…. I had to buy 20 of those EVA foam sheets but I can see a lot of uses for it.  That EVA is going to be like Frank’s Red Hot - “I put that $#it on everything!”

I'm not worried about replacing mine although I may already have several of them- had a little bit of a rare earth magnet fetish a few years back.
At any rate it is a design flaw in my opinion.  Many many will crack.  Once the moisture gets past the nickel plating they begin to corrode very quickly and as they are sintered the metal will turn to dust.

I did manage to quiet mine down a little trying my lucky 13 target.  I was using 19.6g Hunters at 30 feet with it. I put a bunch of foam in the pump arm between plastic and metal.

I still have some closed cell foam tape left over, I'll try adding some to the plastic.

DJ what I did was cut up foam from packaging from one of the Challengers, that thin piece of foam from the top that covers everything the way they come.  I fit the foam between the pump arm and plastic and help for the hollow sound coming from the plastic.

Just slow down as you get to the end of the stroke so you don't get a loud clack.  ::)

This does legitimately help for pumps one through five, sometimes six. When it comes to those last two pumps it's hard for me to do it quietly. I've been shooting with four or five pumps a lot lately now that I feel like my c362 is "broken in".

Good point, I have been using 4 pumps lately.

Yep they are, I have several.
I have RE magnets from 1/16 x 3/32" up to a 2" x 2" cylinder.  You get your fingers between two of those and you will never get them off by yourself.  Therefor I only have one of those.
Also when two RE magnets are allowed to slam together the fracture, the pieces repel from each other and basically explode the shrapnel.  They can be very dangerous.

Also if you try and drill them they catch fire and the smoke is very toxic.

I bought 4 flat rubber washers today: 1 and 1/4 in diameter and 1/8th inch thick at a local, non chain, mom and pop, hardware store. Home Depot acted like they've never heard of flat rubber washers.

I'll put two of them on the pump handle of my 362 when the extended probe and handle I ordered for it arrives. That will quiet it down considerably.

I simply applied a piece of 1/8" closed cell foam tape to the magnet and the strike plate. It quieted in pretty good and that magnet still holds the arm closed. That's a strong magnet.
