Title: Peep sight for k98
Post by: longhunter on January 01, 2022, 12:59:34 PM
I have a Diana / Mauser k98, and I want to put a peep sight on it, while keeping the original front sight.
Any ideas on a sight that will fit, and stay put, under recoil ??

Hi Scott,

First I wish you a very happy new year.
Now, as you know, I'm far from an expert plus I never used a diopter or a peep sight (does the Crosman 1377 count ? I don't think so). But a few years ago I considered buying a diopter for my wooden stock Webley Rebel until I realized it needs a special tunnel front sight so I sent it back. Anyway, unless you're looking for low end ones, these accessories cost an excessive lot of bucks -probably more than common air rifles themselves.
So I had been lurking on a Gamo stuff and if I eventually didn't buy it, maybe you could pay a glance at it : https://www.gamo.com/en/gamo-match-grade-diopter/ (https://www.gamo.com/en/gamo-match-grade-diopter/)

However I can't tell you if it can fit your Diana K98 dovetail or picattiny rail. Moreover, I couldn't find it on the GAMO USA website but only here : https://www.dowdlesports.com/Gamo-Diopter-Sight_p_9439.html. (https://www.dowdlesports.com/Gamo-Diopter-Sight_p_9439.html.)

If this might have helped  :o  ;).

Yves

A Williams sport peep like the FP-AG series will fit. Classic Anschutz match diopters will also fit the Diana rail. New 10-meter sights can be quite expensive but the older ones can be found for reasonable money with a bit of patience. (Note: Diana themselves made match air rifles for many years, but oddly enough none of those sights will work on the current rail.)

There has been quite a bit of info on aperture sights posted on GTA lately. Here's a couple to start with:

I'm leaning towards the Williams sight. I hunt with the k98, a target sight would set too high.
Thanks a bunch, guys.

For the record, the Anschutz diopters will adjust as low as the Williams, i.e. you'd have no issue sighting it in. But the lighter and more compact sport peep is a better choice for hunting, for sure.

Haven't people had really bad experiences hitching antique peeps onto magnum springers such as the K98? I have heard of the peep sights actually being mangled beyond usability by the heavy recoil that modern magnum springers have, and antique target guns didn't.

IMO the K98 is a mellow shooting spring piston, shot cycle is not even as harsh as a 357 big bore PCP . there is always Vibra- Tite ;)

I also ran across a sight by UTG, that has "ears " on either side of the peep. Looks more in keeping with the military look of the rifle.
It was available through Krale.

All the UTG rear sights I know are Picatinny based.
Make sure you get one for 11 mm's rail, or consider the UTG picatinny to dovetail adapter (it has a stop screw).

Krale has the CZ 11 mm's one, though that is a bit pricey.

CZ. That's what I meant.  Don't know why I said UTG.

IMO the K98 is a mellow shooting spring piston

The Mauser K98 produces about the same power as Diana's hardest-shooting magnum springers. I don't know of any magnum springer that was mellow to shoot, especially OEM. Maybe you shoot a detuned Mauser?

The K98 weighs 4.3 kg, so it's heavier = steadier than the 460 Mag or 350 Mag, but only a little heavier than a D48, which has a whole lotta shaking and thumb-busting recoil going on. Very hard on sights and sight bases.

No single answer to this one; there are sights and there are sights.

Diana's own classic match diopters don't fit their current rails - which may be on purpose, as their shallow serrated attachment "foot" would likely fail on a hard charger like the D48 or D350. I might also hesitate to use an older Anschutz alloy sight (such as model 6705 on left in the photo), or some other vintage types.

But Anschutz's vintage all-steel "Universal" models (models 6700, early and late 6702 l-r in the pic), OEM fitments for all types of guns up to centerfires, are built like little anvils. I could always be wrong but can't imagine their having an issue on a springer.

Absolutely correct! THANKS!
