Title: What's Your Ideal .177 Velocity?
Post by: Firewalker on November 28, 2021, 10:19:42 PM
I am facing issues getting my DAR to not spiral .177 wadcutters and open up group sizes at 10m. What is YOUR ideal velocity for average (8gr?) pellets?

is very dependent on each barrel/rifle/pellet... but mostly wad cutters tend to like it down below 650-700 fps...

Thanks Kirby, that will help a lot!  ;D

I agree with Kirby's assessment in general but just wanted to add the 9.3gr RWS Supermags are the one I've had the most success with at higher velocities.

For example, I assembled a QB79 HPA conversion that puts them in a dime at 30 yards with a 900fps muzzle velocity.

I have other guns in which they group even better at more modest velocities but that speed makes a pretty brutal pest control pellet.

They do very well at 12fpe (765fps) from a LW-barreled QB:

It may be that I lucked out with a particularly good batch but they group well from most every .177 gun I own.

FWIW - I've settled on roughly 650 fps for wadcutters myself.

Joe, can you speak to the reason why 650 works best for you?
