.... but what is that exactly?
I have to shim up a scope maybe .015/.020" to clear the plastic flip up lens cover on the front bell. I'm thinking maybe aluminum tape would be best, but I'd love to know if there's anything better.
Thanks in advance!

I use shims cut from toothpaste tube.
When lens covers don't quite fit, I usually sand the bottom of the lens cover.
-
Brass from a hobby store OR film negatives work good.

Or get height adjustable rings, easy to set and use, plus you can add a couple thousand's for droop if needed..

YMMV

Those are all good ideas guys. Thank you.
I may have an old toothpaste tube available soon, but in the meantime I did turn up some HVAC tape (quite thin aluminum) and tried it. Its almost exactly what I needed but still I'm making contact with underside of the flip up cover. And I mean juuust barely.
I don't want to double the tape as it doesn't stick to itself, so I'll either find a better shim or I'll take a very small amount off the bottom of the cover.
Of course, once I do that I'll need a 3/8" cheek riser to keep my weld. .....sigh.....

It's what I use.

Friction tape.
-
Aluminum tape.
-
Why bother when there are taller scope rings or mounts?
-
Aluminum cans work quite well if you only need a bit.

Taller rings change the whole exterior ballistics dynamics - sometimes ok, sometimes bad.
-
Go to harbor freight or wherever you prefer and get a set of feeler gauges. Multiple thicknesses in the perfect size strips.
-
Friction tape.
This is what I use as well. Many new scope rings come with friction tape on them to help with scope slipping within the rings. Why not use what the manufacturer uses?

Absolutely right Bill.

I use double sided cellotape and sometimes a strip of aluminium canworks well
