I’m impressed with my 392. I can vary the power from 5-15 foot pounds that’s basically 3- 10 pumps. It’s very quiet at 3 pumps compared to 10 pumps.

I thought the max was 8 pumps on the 392s. Unless yours is built.

It says right on the box 10 pumps so 10 we try for chronograph testing but it’s a pain pumping that much 5 max is all I do

Those last couple of pumps is stressful on the rifle. " Eight Is Enough ."

These "old school" pumpers are definitely near the top of the food chain, at least in multi pump pneumatic airguns. I usually use between 3-6 pumps, but occasionally 7-8 with heavy for caliber lead (18gr+ in .22, or 11.5++gr in .177). Both my 392 and 397S the box/paper work claimed "up to 10 pumps". I decided that I don't need last bit of power, but know it's there if I need to lean on the gun (with no retained air).
The 397 (.177) is less efficient with the maximum power, but 3-6 pumps meets all my plinking/pesting needs with 7.4-10.5gr pellets.
In all honesty, my 392 hasn't gotten much use lately, but can't seem to let it go either. Its the most versital airgun I have.

I totally agree and it’s just pointless pumping more than 8 or even 5 because at 5 I’m at almost 10 foot pounds and at 8 it’s at almost 13 foot pounds all respectable #s. My favorite is 3 pumps 464 fps for farting around without hurting yourself and it’s quiet

Wow thank you for the info I just read it

The adjustable power is an outstanding feature on pumpers. I have owned Sheridans which are similar, for over 60 years. I plink with 3 pumps, hunt small game with 5, & use up to 8 for larger game, or longer distances.

The new synthetic stock 392/397's are indeed rated for 10 pumps. Advisable? Who knows. Maybe this came from the same geniuses in R and D that agreed upon that lovely stock comb height.

Lol I don’t know if I’d risk more
Than 8 pumps anymore

Adequate power in stock form. Depends on what you compare it to. Impressive would be steroid power and above to me.

10 pumps is asking a lot, from component stress and strength required just to gain the last bit of power.
The comb height can be "adjusted", lol. I started this a while back, and have left it as is, but decided on finishing, hopefully this week. Going to use "Steel stick" putty from JB weld to finish it (fill a gap) and do final shaping.

Your rifle has virtually the same power as my Sheridans , close to 650 FPS using a 14gr. Pellet . I am sure that all the small game I have taken in the last 60 years with my Sheridan , would fill the bed of a pickup truck. That is plenty of power for me.

Can't go wrong with a Benjamin pumper. I've owned several 312's and shoot one often. I think at one time the instructions stated the more pumps the harder it would shoot. My early manual said to not exceed 12 pumps. I don't exceed 8 pumps in my 312 and it shoots premiers at 650 fps.

I don't have the synthetic version, but I will offer a bit of advice for any 392, especially the new one: anything over 5 pumps, make sure you are using proper pumping technique to prevent twisting and minimize stress on the rifle.

Honestly 5 pumps is plenty. 2 is enough for targets. Accurate enough with CPHP and a Williams peep sight

When I ran my Benjamin 312 through the crony 6 pumps at 600fps seemed the most efficient for hunting. Two more pumps raised velocity to 650. I have a 273 peep on mine.
I do not own a 392 but have owned the 340 series and 310 series. Velocities of the 392 seem to be simular to the 300's. For their size Benjamin/Crossman makes a very powerful air rifle that has good accuracy.

My Steroid can get into the low 20s for fpe. My self modded 392 runs around 16 fpe with the Crosman Premier HP 14.3 grain pellet, just over 700 fps and at 8 pumps. The consideration for me, one of them, is getting a full dump at anything pat 8 pumps. Both of my 392 rifles retained air past 8 pumps, sometimes at 8! So pumping on beyond 8 pumps was just turning the rifle into an air conserving pumper. Of course the Steroid rifle will dump right up to 15 pumps, my self-modded 392 will dump a full 8 pumps.
Currently I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery so grabbed a Gamo Urban .22 and a Umarx G2 .25 to play with while I heal up. But a 392 and a Crosman 140 will always be my favs. My 392 self-mod with scout mounted pistol scope and a Williams peep:

And BTW, the above rifle and another were acquired for $50 each at Academy on closeout several years back! I cleaned a little paint out of the barrel and accuracy is great and function is perfect.
