Title: what makes a person a good shot?
Post by: stevemag on October 05, 2011, 08:28:56 PM
Many ,many years ago i read an article in guns and ammo about shooting rifles.
i don't remember the writer but he said if you can hit an 8 inch paper plate off hand at  100 yards 10 out of 10 you can consider your self a "pretty good shot" so let me do the math here....
4 inches at 50 yards
2 inches at 25 yards
1 inch at 12.5 yards
so lets say 3/4 inch at 10 yards
thats seem like more than a "pretty good shot" to me . i think i need a lot more practice

Hmmm- interesting way to look at it. Are you saying that if I can remain within a two inch target at 25 yards 10 out of 10 shots, that I'm a good shot? Would that be with open sights?

I think it's far more complex than that. Obviously being a good shot requires consistency. I think that is key above all else. But at the same time, have good consistent form and shooting style will not garuntee accuracy but will surely help. I think a good shot is someone who can be accurate (again there is no universal definition of accuracy) with their gun at any given distance. So if I can shoot a 1/2" group off hand at 25 yards with my r9 and you consider that a good group at that distance then I suppose that's good but if I don't think that's accurate then it means nothing. It's all a personal thing I suppose. This is one of those age old tough to answer questions LOL

i think off hand with a scope or open sights would be equally challenging

Tpatner412 i think if you shoot offhand groups  1/2 inch at 25 yards there is not a person alive who wouldn't  think you were  a "pretty good  shot"

That was just an example LOL. I guess I'm gonna have to go try it out now

yea i'll second the 1/2" off hand at 25yds. definitely would be considered good. ;D i always thought a good shot was hitting what your aiming at. ;D guess trick is pick your targets carefully :D ;D

I've heard something similar to that old statement.  At one hundred yards, a paper plate is about the size of the kill zone on a deer.  Most likely what he was getting at.  So, a pretty good shot can effectively kill a deer at one hundred yards, offhand.  Or, I would say, they are capable of going after deer in the woods.

1/2 at 25 yards with a springer, offhand and consistently...I'd expect to see you in London next summer.

Really it's as Red said above about off hand shooting, I would even take it a bit further an say you can be considered a skilled shot(rifleman) if you can hit a 6" bull at 200yd's off hand(on command) with a good PB, with an AG I would say 1" at 25 off hand would be fine shooting an what you should work toward's.

1" @ 25 yards off hand, with a springer?  You are a great shot.  Imaguine what that same person could do with a rest?  I hope to someday be able to ofhand shoot that well.  For me, I want to able to shoot an airgun well enough to kill small game, for food, should the need arise.  Outside of that.  I really like shooting rockstar cans in the back yard with my buddies.  They aim for the can, I aim for the Star on the can.

Everytime I think I have arrived at the level of 'good shot' I move that blasted dime out just a little farther.  I'm all the way out to 8 yards now!!  LOLOL!

In reality, I think there are so many factors to take into consideration that a single definition of 'good shot' will not work universally.  For me, a 'good shot' is one who hits only what he shoots at whenever he shoots!  Now, if I could just regularly hit that dime or a squirrel's head consistently, I would be happy!

dpricenator, please realize that it's is "not" that unreachable of a goal an as I said really should be the "goal" your after, also know I have been working "at" reaching this goal for well over 45 year's with all weapon's, to answer about shot placment at 25yds benched/rested, one "large" ragged hole should be the mark for 5 to 10 shot's, it's not impossible, I do that with a Air King 54 with William's peep an globe, with a scope you should work for a ragged hole(tossing out any "called" Flyer's). I can name several on here that can an "have" reached this goal if not exceeded it.

if i shot 2 inches at 25 yards consistently and someone said to me,   'are ya any good with that thing?'   i think i could say "yup, i'm a pretty good shot"    its not like its an official class of shooter we are trying to define, we all know someones a good shot when we see them...

I've seen the targets...blows my mind.  I Know it can be done, i know it takes practice and I strive for a rested 1 ragged hole target in my near future.  I actually put 20 pellets into a silver dollar sized group the other day with a QB-57 using a standing rest (lader shelf).  one big ragged hole

LOL, PERFECT answer ED!!! Once you practice to the point "ya" think your good, step back an realize you just started a long journey, when it become's second nature to step into your stance an break the shot at least close to where you think it should be or go(AG or PB), then you can claim to be a "good" rifleperson(like that PC wording lady's), when it become's almost relaxing(Zen like say?), you have done one of two thing's, IF like "me", to old to hang anylonger :o :P, or a master marksman(person?). I wish God's Speed to all my Brother's an Sister's here in their effort's. About all I have learned on AGing so far is what Mark an alot of other's have said on here, "YA's do get what ya pay for in an airgun" (or know/be a GOOD tuner hehe).........Jay

I think it's the "10 out of 10" that makes that statement pretty true for shooting offhand.... I won my Dominion Marksman Silver Shield wayyyyyyyy back in the 70's and we shot at a 1" 10-ring, less than 2" 9 ring at 20 yards indoor with .22 target velocity ammo.... The rifles had to weigh under 7 lbs. (mine was a Winchester Model 69 I still have), no scope (I had a peep rear and a globe front).... The standing requirement was 20 targets (not in a row, mind you) scoring 95 or better.... At the time I think I was a "pretty good shot" and it took me about a year, shooting 2 standing targets a week (ie 100 targets) to get my 20 keepers.... Mind you, at the end I pretty much got one a week, often scoring 96-98.... If I ever dropped one out into the 8 ring (which would have missed that 8" plate at 100 yards) I was pretty ticked....

I wish I could still shoot that well....  :-[

*(&^ Bob I just wish I could still see the front sight plainly again like we could in the 70's(wouldn't that be a sweet gift), let alone the loss of "frame" stability(nice word for the shake's/yip's, muscle mass).

I got my silver shield at the now defunct Edmonton Gun Club back in about '69.

My Dad used to shoot at the Greater Edmonton Club back in the '30s.... I still have his shooting jacket with the crest and his pins.... He got his bronze, silver and gold pins, and the six teaspoons (20 targets 100x100 prone each, I still have them too) and was working on his Silver Shield when he quit.... I used HIS rifle to get my pins, my sitting, kneeling and standing crests, and the shield.... *BURN*....  ;D

A good shot. What a topic. This topic is a broad subject that covers so much. I as many others, have been around guns and shooting all my life. My father was a hurter so as a child I too followed his footsteps. Skeet shooting, targets, plinking in the bar pits and live game. I had many police friends so I got to go and shoot there guns when they went to the range. In the early 70's while in college I took a shooting class and achieved the Marksman pin as well. There again I have seen people that could at the range put a hole in a hole propped, kneeling and freehand but in the field not be able to hit the back side of a barn.
They were excellentt shooters. Put a moving target in front of them, much less a live target, and they were lost. All this time thinking they were a good shooter. So point being it's hard to make claims of being a good shooter. We all know practice in thebroadd range of styles andtechniquess is what it takes. Some people are a natural in all. Some have to work at it. As mentioned, age has much to do with it. Some of us can't use the old IRON SIGHTS because we can't see well enough to make one line up with the other or even see the things. Then the old frame thing. So a good shooter to me is one that is satisfied making good shots with the abilities they have and making the best of it and work to be better. Anyone that brings home the MEAT or bagging your limit no matter how many shots you fired is considered a good shot as well. MEAT AND TATERS= GOOD SHOT

Funny, I'm a better shot on live game than I am on a paper target.... I think I concentrate too much on paper and start to wobble.... At 63, a scope is a necessity now, though.... ;D

In the past 6 months I've had the opportunity to shoot with both my brothers. They were both pretty surprised at my accuracy. At the same time I was distressed with it. Sure, I'd hit what I was aiming at 9-10 times... it was the MISS that bothered me. Pulling off, breathing wrong, not breathing... whatever it was, sights or scoped, standing or sitting, powerful gun, target... all I could remember was the misses. Some days I'll stack them... and some days not. It is all me, and I have a lot of room for improvement.

When I think of good shot, I think of sniper whose command of the rifle, squeeze, breathing, heart rate, and precision with windage and elevation are imperative for making a shot and saving lives. I think I would be very disappointed with my performance in that type of situation.

GOT YA!!! At this point I would agree that I am not a sniper. And your right, most SNIPERS ARE GREAT SHOOTERS that have control of themselves and have a routine for the game. I should not say game. It is a profession and not only does their life depend on it, but others as well. WELL PUT!!!

Snipers... just watching those guys at practice is awe inspiring, putting one 7.62mm after another through the same hole at 200-300 yards with ease. Actually, the hole becomes so tattered and irregular shaped that all you can see thru a spotting scope is the dust from the berm behind the target, and no NEW holes in the target!

Wow rsterne...after reading your post I pulled out my bronze, silver and gold CIL pins to have a look at them.
Sounds like we had a lot in common.  I remember all to well those drives to the gun club in my dads smoke filled '62 GMC...this would have been about the mid 60's when I was in my late teens.  For my 16th birthday my dad had given me a nice Mossberg .22 with Williams peeps...
Yup...a lot of good memories today.

I received my latest issue of Rifle magazine and read an article by Mike Venturino that touches upon this.  He's best known for shooting old time black powder cartridge rifles.  The article centered around shooting withint your ethical ability (a hunting article).  Essentially, he is talking about offhand.  Now, here's a guy who shoots out to 1,000 yards with big old Sharps rifles and does pretty well.  He said his effective offhand hunting range is about 150 yards, scoped or iron sighted.  (Incidentally, he said that scopes don't always make offhand easier.  The two top shooters in this year's big schuetzen match had identical scores - scoped and receiver sighted.)  So don't expect that shooting flies benched with the gun in a mount, all the time in the world and barely touching the trigger will get you dime sized groups offhand at twenty-five yards.

i consider myself a good shot. with a sporter 22 lr and scope at 25 yards i can hit 3 shotshells side by side in 1 second going left to right and not stopping. sometimes when those shells fly up i can hit them on the way down before they hit the ground.

What makes a person a good shot?  Being the best shot you can be.

If you are truly SERIOUS about improving your air rifle skills, particularly off-hand shooting, then get this book and practice what it teaches.  You will notice that the title is the WAYS (pleural) of the rifle.  That is because while there are some basic things all shooters must do, there are also variations that will be specific to your height, weight, sex and body habitus that are important to consider.  I can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone who wants to significantly improve their shooting skills with any long gun if they are willing to study, apply and change a lot of wrong things they may have learned along the way about shooting.  'nuf said.

Some people are naturals  some  have to learn some  just can't shoot  no matter what but I admire them for their persistance and their love of the sport and a lot  just do not understand that pellet rifles are different than a powder burner. I have seen Tommy shoot and beleive me guys he is very serious about it even if he is wrong handed lol!!!  David
