Opened up my new .25 Marauder, happy Father's Day to me, and yippee got a nice surprise. I got the new Turkish Walnut stock!

Will post more pics when I get home!

Good review, LT sir ;D
Yes, that walnut stock looks nice!
Is the checkering laser?

Is the checkering laser?
Yes, it is, and has a lot of grip to it so it functions just as it should. It is not checkered, however.
-
Either way, it looks decent ;D
-
The specs suggest that it is a lb heavier than the wood Mrod. Can you get an actual weight of yours and the stock?

This is the wood, and yes I can.

Looks much better than the ill-fitting Boyd's stocks ;D

New wood VS Old wood. ;D 2lb heavier than syn.

I really wish you could buy stuff like this with an unfinished stock... That on has some nice patterns and I better it would look even better with a higher gloss level from say a bunch of truoil coats and some finish sanding.

100%
Being a wood guy I like deep, contrasting patterns. It would be very easy to get this stock to shine with some tru-oil or linseed oil (samething). It would take stripping it first and then 20 light coats or so.
-
I don't seem to like glossy walnut on a matte action.
Glossy looks great on deeply-blued classic rifles though.
-
Wow, what a nice surprise! Happy Birthday/Anniversary/Father's Day! I'm surprised those are shipping with the new stock already. I wonder when Crosman Parts will have them available for purchase, I'd like to put one on my Gen 2 Mrod! Congrats on the nice looking rifle!
-
Congratulations! Beautiful stock!
-
Just fitted that 4-16x44 Covenant4 on there. Coming together. Need to clean it.
-
Good heavens, if that’s how a Mrod would have looked years ago, I would have bought one. Hope you get it shooting as good as it looks and enjoy the heck out of it. You’re not alone on liking wood stocks on guns. Some of my buddies say they are too hard on their guns to have a wood stock. I just tell them a beat up wood stock is still prettier than a perfect plastic one.
-
What a beautiful gun!
-
Can't argue with walnut. Lookin good!
-
8.15lbs
Thank-you, that does not seem to be 1lb heavier than the original wood stock. Have to go find the numbers I recorded.
I will still try to get one from crosman parts this fall.
With scope installed is the balance point still the gauge?
-
Dang! I’m jealous as I ordered what seemed to be the only wood stocked .177 Marauder available on the market 2 weeks ago, but AoA sent me a synthetic .22 instead! Apparently “the wooden marauders are being phased out“ I was told...
-
What a beautiful gun!
Thanks. Definitely looks nicer and darker than my Cayden's Walnut. I bet there will be some people that want the never stocks. Hopefully Crosman makes them available. I also think it would be smart if Crosman sold an aftermarket Walnut bullpup stock, though I never see that happening since it would cannibalize on their Akela sales.

I just got my 1st M-rod a couple weeks back and I have that stock also. I wasn't impressed with the finish. I hand sanded with 320 grit, then laid down 3 coats of poly; sanding between each goat. Then I used 0000 steel wool, wood wax and buffed my forearms off. It didn't achieve the high sheen I was working for but the entire stock is smooth as butter now. I'll post pics later.
-
That stock is definitely a step up for the Marauder! I do hope Crosman Parts will get some and sell them in the near future.

Thanks. I do feel like i lucked out. I suppose since my Cayden is a lighter Walnut that I was due some good luck on this one. Really glad I got the rifle. Beautiful and shoots well. Haven't done any long distance stuff, but I will check that out sometime this next week.

Paul, I highly suspect that by the fall you can talk a crosman Customer Service rep out of the part number. ;)
-
If you guys figure out the part number please let me know. That new stock looks great compared to the older style plus if a guy did want to make it nicer with some tru oil it would take better than their current ones. Now the question is how much will Crosman be charging for one?

Speaking of MROD stocks, Boyd’s has 2 for sale in the Rapid Sale section.

Out of the two, like the Pro-varment in walnut. If it had the adjustable comb, might have went for it.

Yes, they do lack cheek height:

I use God-A-Grip sorbothane cheek pads on my guns.
I have 2 guns in the PI that sports the SOPMOD:

They look very nice with their speckled/textured finish and comfy, too.
Does not mar your gun either.

I would suggest stripping the Cayden, then applying ferric nitrate and heating, then start the layers of oil. It will darken up nicely. If you decide to do this, I have a large!supply of ferric nitrate crystals, just mix with distilled water.

They are going to make some money importing wood. It actually looks like my stock: https://www.pyramydair.com/product/benjamin-marauder-air-rifle-stock-wood?a=10069 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/benjamin-marauder-air-rifle-stock-wood?a=10069)

If anyone buys the new stock please post some pictures here to see the deviations of the wood type

My Kral come out pretty good using this method, just can't sand too deep between layers or you'll be sanding the stain.

The new stock looks better than the old factory stock for sure , I like the boyds blaster stock or varmint thumbhole ... I had Norm of disco's R us cut the inlet on my boyds blaster stock - royal jacaranda laminate some years back for the gen 1 .25 I still have , that stock fits the action like a glove , Richards micro fit makes one similar that I have on my XP .40 badger called the " Tac Driver " , and that one has the best shape - fit , and feel I think ....
Boyds does have that Varmint thumbhole stock for the mrod in forest camo , that 1 looks pretty cool ...
-
The fall came early. I ordered one from PA. When available from crosman, it may be a few dollars less, but not by allot. Said it was the last, hopefully the stock count was correct.
-
Well, this should be interesting... I just ordered one from PA also and it said 1 left when I put it in my cart! I wonder if we will both get one, or if one will be canceled or placed on backorder! I sent you a PM, but it said your inbox is full! I was going to compare Order Numbers and times of the e-mail confirmation! ;D
-
Thx Paul, I made some room in my inbox. As I replied, you have me beat order and timestamp wise. The quantity did update after I placed order. We will see.

Post the results! Really want to see the texture. I might buy another just to refinish it and take my time

Lots of pellets just came in too. I nearly always buy from AOA though because of how they treat me. Since AOA is carrying a lot more Crosman now maybe I can order the stock from them. Doubt it but I'll give them a call next month. Last year I asked Kipp why they never had lower end Crosman. The next week they had the Fortitude, but I bought the Cayden from them. Glad they started carrying some more modestly priced guns though.

I used the July 4th 10% off code, did I miss a better one? I usually use the Capitol One browser extension that will try codes automatically. It's been pretty good at giving the latest and best, but I'm sure it doesn't know all of them!

I bet you Crosman will have the lowest price, especially if you can get a 20-25% off deal like Father's day weekend.

That discount will only work if they offer them for sale through their web based retail store, most likely, they will be available through Crosman Parts, and at an equally discounted price. Quite honestly, I was surprised they were priced at only $99 on PA, that's still a great price for a Turkish Walnut stock!

100% agree. All these lower budget have wood aftermarket stocks that cost the price of the gun. Nice that they are making this available.they should do the same for the Fortitude.

Have you checked to see how different the Marauder is from the Fortitude? I wonder if it could be made to fit with a little work working?
-
The fortitude has a much smaller diameter airtube. Crosman might offer a wood fortitude in the future though.
The original G2 wood stock was $96 from crosman parts. The hydro-dipped wood stocks were $150 retail. I suspect crosman got a good deal from their Turkish supplier that PA was selling them at $100. Typically the crosman parts they offer are marked up from what you can get them direct. Dealer pricing is significant lower, too.
-
Shooters like walnut. Turks don’t normally use dead-plain Walnut, but the “pretty ” will vary. They don’t seem to exactly grade them other than pass/fail…..would be a surprise in a box, but at least it will look like Walnut.
$100 is more than fair in today’s market...please don’t spray bead liner over one.
Fortitude/M-ROD:
If you really want something, can figure out a way to do it...but it would be a job and a half.
None of the screw holes/gauge holes are going to line up
Going form a small sized air tube to a big sized air tube stock is going to stretch your skills.
I played the Turkish wood lottery once...on a Webley. Hatsan….really think of it as a “random win”, so the cynical me thinks the next one would be a “random loss” to keep Karma balanced.
Not done yet....did look better after removing the white pad spacer.

My status still says picking and packing, so I'm not going to call it done just yet! LOL! Still plenty of time to discover the in-stock count was wrong! I'm hoping not, but you never know! I'll let you know once I get the e-mail with a shipping notification!

I went to PA and could not find where to order one?? Do they it for the Field and Target version??
I am jealous??

I received shipping info this morning, it should be here this weekend. I'll post pictures when it arrives. I hope it's a pretty one! ;D

You won’t. I have scoured the entire internet over the last 3-4 weeks seeking wood stocked Marauders. No one has any rn unless you want a wood stock on a regular .25, Crosman barreled .22, or Semi auto Mrod.
F/T’s are out of stock EVERYWHERE, EVERY caliber...
-
I went ahead and bought the Pre-order for the Field and Target in .22 cal (LW barrel) with the new walnut stock. Says that it will ship on or about the 23rd... but PA has been a little late on dates before.
-
I love walnut, especially some of the special grades etc. Here is my Gen 1 Marauder in a custom Field Target stock from a few years back.

I’m with you there. I ordered a wood stocked Mrod but AoA sent me a Synrod instead. Says they aren’t getting any more wood stocked mrods so I settled :'(
But Boyd’s sells Marauder stocks in any look you want including plain Jane gorgeous walnut.

Yes, I was VERY shocked and disappointed. Was supposed to be .177 too but a .22 Synrod is what arrived. They offered to send me an Akela instead but I didn’t want that one. Maybe should’ve gone with a kratos or cayden they also “say” they have in stock. I settled with taking $100 bucks back but I really wanted a wooden stocked .177. I’m actually happy with the .22 but still sour about the stock... if I was gonna get a .22 from the start, I could’ve ordered a Crosman barreled .22 wood stocked Mrod from a number of places. I only ordered from AoA cause they said they had a wood .177 in stock...
Oh yeah, I was also upset because I had tracked down and arranged to have all types of .177 ammo to try out and an extra magazine. But since I was stuck with a .22, I had to scramble to find .22 pellets of diff varieties which has not been fun and had to wait several days for a second .22 mag to arrive. So I was reloading a mag every 10 rounds after I went to great lengths to ensure I had 2 mags from the start provided they sent me what I ordered...
Overall not the best experience and of course wood stocked .22’s came back in stock at places (with the Crosman barrel at least) RIGHT after I settled. And I only settled because no one had many marauders at all that weren’t .25’s when they were making me decide between supposedly keeping a diff rifle from what I wanted and going without anything for however long.

Wow really surprised by that. I am a pretty outspoken supporter of AoA and their business practices, and that is odd to 'send what you got' kind of thing to do...but at least they knocked off $100 that will buy you a new Turkish Stock now!
-
I have the .25 but I think the .22 has a lot more versatility in ammo than either the .177 and .25
Anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if some people get older stocks from lesser known venders were they had stocked up Mrods

In their defense, they did seem appalled that this happened and wanted to know who’s name was on the test target which also tells them who ok’d the thing before sending it out. They were pretty perturbed at whoever supposedly checked everything.
The rifle shoots really well from 35 yards on out to 75 at least. Although I get these random groups sometimes where several rounds will be touching in a very small ragged hole, then I’ll get a flier. But before the mag is empty I’ll end up with 2 separate ragged holes -one where I was initially grouping and another group around the flier. Both end up good groups a few mm’s apart, but it’s like the barrel suddenly shifts POI part way through the magazine sometimes. So I just ordered a Lothar-Walther barrel lol.
-
Was the crosman box for a 177 wood or 22 syn?
-
Was the crosman box for a 177 wood or 22 syn?
.22 synthetic.
So you can imagine my nervousness when I pulled the main box out of the shipping box and saw that info on the label...I was thinking like “they just used the wrong box...they just used the wrong box...”
But then, as I knew deep down, it WAS a synthetic .22 upon opening the box.
I’m actually happy that I have the .22 instead of .177 now for the record. Little more power for pests and more of a challenge when target shooting with how much a slow .22 pellet arch’s (When tuned for shots per fill) along it’s trajectory. .177 is much more flat shooting and easier at LONG range. I have an acre lot and can easily do 50 and 75 yard shoots along with any range in between. Could do 100 yards if I set up in my front yard where the grass meets the road, where the curb would be on paved streets. But that’s not going to happen lol.
-
FWIW: The test target is provided by crosman. I highly doubt AoA takes the guns out of the box and tests them.

No, that’s exactly what they SAY they do. It’s repeated over and over while you’re on hold too.
-

They do. Kipp shot my Cayden before shipping it. I can see his name and the ammo he used. Often it helps too in seeing some alternative ammo.
-
Point in fact: I have a booklet with all the warranty and instructions that came with all my guns from AoA, and I still have all the shot reports from AoA. They have never not done it. Additionally, they always have a chrony spreadsheet they attach from an old school calculator giving the ES and velocity. Pretty nice.

Yup, that’s what I was expecting based on what they say/is written everywhere and why I was shocked to receive the wrong rifle in caliber AND stock material.
-AND I didn’t even mention the following so as to not dog on them publicly SOO badly...but the receiver was coated with what looked like ground up brown cardboard into dust, caked in the groves for the scope mount and all in and around the flat head screw at the rear of the receiver.
It was CLEAR no one looked this one over...
It was worse in person. It wouldn’t blow off either. I had to take a nylon brush and a pick!

Knowing how they run things they requested the name on the test shot sheet to have a talk with whoever sent that out. Bad mistake. But overall looks like it worked to your benefit.

Paul, I received a FedEx shipping label from PA. Looks like they found a stock. Says it’s shipped and by the weight, the stock must be included. :D
-
I have my fingers crossed that they are actually walnut as pictured, and not the old style beech! The description just says wood, it doesn't really say what kind!

Well, shipping return labels exist for a reason. That would be a disappointment

The picture in the add is defiantly the new stock. The comb riser is wood, not plastic.
-
No doubt! I think PA would be remiss to substitute the old beech stock and think no one would notice! The picture is pretty clear that's the new style, and the ad does say it's the new stock, they just failed to mention what type of wood it's actually made from! :o
-
Not sure how Turkish Walnut compares to American Walnut, but suspect it will be better than Orangish Beech. ;)

My delivery has been pushed back till tomorrow. So much for 2 day delivery! Gotta love FedEx, doesn't matter what shipping method you pay for, you get it when they get around to getting it to you! :P

If it’s FedEx smartpost, USPS delivers it to your door and you always loose an entire extra day just in the transition from one carrier to the other. Other than that, FedEx is usually pretty great and I’ve really tested ALL the carriers recently... in the last year I’ve been buying tons of parts for my bike, everything needed to get started air brushing, about 15 books to complete a rare collection (~30 books), parts to rebuild 2 old chainsaws, accessories and go-fast parts for my new chainsaws, An air Venturi m1a, a replacement 20 year old Gamo Hunter 440, a Crosman 1322, A Marauder, all the pellets and targets and accessories for said Mrod, parts to customize the 1322, and A LOT more random stuff I’m forgetting.
About a 1/4 of all that was shipped with FedEx. They’re USUALLY pretty good unless it’s the dumb FedEx smartpost collaboration with the post office ime.
-
Nope, not SmartPost, it was FedEx Ground 2 day, that's turned into 3 Day delivery! It took PA 4 days to pull, pack and ship it! Seven days from placing the order to hopefully receiving it, from Ohio to NW Florida (a 6-7 hour drive)! I can order from Huma-Air in the Netherlands and have it in my hand 2-3 days after placing the order, I really don't understand why these U.S. based companies and carriers can't do the same... >:( Other than they really don't care!
FedEx delivers to our neighborhood daily, so even when I do have something shipped FedEx SmartPost, FedEx typically delivers it because they are in the neighborhood anyway! It rarely get transferred to the Post Office, but when it does, that usually adds 2 extra days because our Post Office is just about worthless! :P

Mine is showing out for delivery, but I’m a couple hundred miles away, at camp. I’ll get to see it Sunday, though.
On the other hand, I have “pending” delivery from FedEx on a spinning reel that should have been here yesterday. ::)
While Amazon drops before the AM sort, the rest are afternoon drops at the AO. They will get sorted that afternoon or the next morning, typically. So they will always add at least 1 day.
-
FedEx is showing mine is loaded on the Truck for delivery today. FedEx usually delivers around 2:00 in the afternoon, so should have time to get the action mounted and take some pictures this afternoon.

I seem to be getting enamored with walnuts lately.
The more I look at them, the more I find them more appealing than laminates (https://i.imgur.com/X7byqwc.gif)

I wonder how the MRODs compare to the JKHANs:

I thought these rifles were long gone in the US.
Probably someone will grab them with gusto now that I've posted it ;D

The Mrod stock arrived today. I haven't had a chance to put it on the Mrod yet, but here's a couple pics. Definitely nicer than the old Beech stocks!

That’s a steal for $100 ;D
Most replacement stocks are just too expensive >:(

Thx for posting, Paul. Look forward to seeing mine tomorrow.

WOW, That Thumbhole looks spectacular

So, Crosman believed that the famous and almost obsolete Marauder only needs a better looking stock.
It's like putting lipstick on a pig.
Crosman should start spending money on designing and developing their own new airguns for the 2020s.
They keep avoiding developing new and better airguns and at this time they hope that the Turks will save them.
Crosman at this time has no in house offering that I would buy.

Was the crosman box for a 177 wood or 22 syn?
So you can imagine my nervousness when I pulled the main box out of the shipping box and saw that info on the label...I was thinking like “they just used the wrong box...they just used the wrong box...”
But then, as I knew deep down, it WAS a synthetic .22 upon opening the box.
Schrödinger's Marauder!

Dang, I am so jealous! I do not know for the life of me, how I didn’t notice these stocks on PA or that you had said yours was on order from PA. Maybe I was unsure if it was the updated gen 2 with the cheek riser or not till I saw your post today.
I also thought I read that you bought a parts rifle just for the stock or something earlier in the thread and not a new replacement stock by itself. Must’ve been a diff guy...
Either way, I just preordered one cause they’re on back order but it’ll get here eventually.
So thanks for the heads up! I’ll end up getting my wood stocked Mrod after all!
-and for only $500 total ($400 + $100 stock) instead of $560 total ($460 + $100 stock) due to the money I got back from AoA pooping the bed on me.

Yep, different guy, the 1st picture below was my Mrod before the new stock. I did a rattle can Redneck Camo job on it!
The 2nd pic is it all gussied up in it's up-town diggs!
If you pre-order, may as well grab enough pellets to get free shipping and then use the Gateway coupon code to get 10% off, that drops the price of the stock to $89.99 and you get a couple of tins of pellets for free!

I planned on the pellets but LMBO, look at their in-stock .22 pellet selection RIGHT now after the sale. LMBO, it’s all the odd ball stuff no one buys with like 1 or 2 being good stuff for normal use. I have plenty of the AA diabolo 18’s. Everything else was meh.
-
LOL! I stocked up on those 18 grain AA pellets! They shoot better than the JSB 18.13 grain pellets in a lot of my guns! I figured I may as well stock up while they were in stock and get free shipping on the stock. Between the savings on shipping, 2 free tins of pellets and the discount, it was a pretty decent savings! The biggest shock to me was the tax! Apparently the Gob'ment got to them and they are collecting FL Sales tax now! That used to be the main reason I shopped on-line was to avoid paying the dang taxes!

Reminds me of the Isuzu Crosswind in the Philippines that had a 4JA1 engine—had 1, but my brother uses it now.
No electronics, ubiquitous parts, gear-driven and not some flimsy timing belt, very economical but kinda slow.
They discontinued it about 2 years ago due to emission standards, but the engine has been around since the early 80’s.
Like the MROD, it just keeps going ;D

That Jkhan thumbhole Noblesse does look fantastic, but it costs more than any MRod that includes a stock.

Agree 100%
They actually have a very nice platform in the Bulldog, Sidelever, nice mag, 300cc air.
I never got it why they didn't expand in .30 .25 and .22 and with standard rifle configurations,.....such a waste IMO
-
Mine was waiting for me when I got home. The design is very close to the original G2 wood stock. The main change being the wood comb risor and some design changes around it. The pistol grip feels a little smaller in diameter but didn't put a tape to it yet. It is almost 11 ounces lighter than the beech stock, which was surprising to me. I always thought walnut was more dense than beech. On a quick look-up European walnut is less dense. Interesting.
Beech: 49.9oz
Turk Walnut: 39.1oz
The balance point is still near the gauge. The stock is inletted to free float the air tube, but mine is making contact at the front edge. A dollar bill slides up and down from the gauge to the front edge. It also has a small ding on the left side.
The stock itself has this unfinished feel to it, to me. ie like it was stained but not a finish coat added. Or a very thin one. Not saying that is bad, just different from any of my other wood stocks. Some slight streakiness to the stain. Kinda zebra like in the light, perpendicular to the wood grain.
The sling studs are a different style. Also just found that the trigger guard was loose, but the that screw is stripped. Easily fixable.
-

How do the studs differ? I can’t tell from the pic. And do you know how the gen 2 synthetic studs compare to the ones on the new walnut stock?
Thanks.

It is just a different style. The syn, and for that matter the beech wood and every boyds stock I have, has a more rounded stud. The Turk walnut has a more cylinder look.

I just got my first Mrod and am in love. Its more of a platform than a specific rifle, and what a lovely platform.

I didn't take it for a ride, but Uncle Mikes went in without any issues.

I am going to be posting more pics in a bit. I took some more detailed ones earlier this week but wanted some other comparisons. Glad you guys got some beautiful stocks too. Agreed on the slightly unfinished feeling, though I honestly wouldn't want to touch it until I need to refinish it later.
I'll post some later

I agree. Actually it was a couple individuals here that persuaded me to go with it; despite having not starting with one, it is a really enjoyable rifle even though I am not a novice airgunner. It holds up, and truely is a fun straight shooter. For the price I am very happy.
-
I have taken some more photos but at night the high contrast isn't really nice. I will take some more photos later, but just wanted to take some more for those who are undecided on whether or not to buy it.... and you guys already know how this rifle handles on the field so beyond weight this is an aesthetic choice for the buyer. I am happy the stocks that have come in have been pretty similar in consistency as the grain I received; for those that like Walnut wood these stocks will be an upgrade at $100.
I went ahead and uploaded more of these at Atlas too. I took some on my GoPro and a DSLR but neither are importing right now. Frustrating. Motorola phone photos it is!
Keep them posting!

HPAman and Paul, If you could, please do the dollar bill check on the forearm. ie it should slide between the air tube and stock from the front back to just before the air gauge. On mine it is pinched at the front and it is not from missed inletting there. It is something back at the trigger inletting causing it to angle up, when stock lug is tightened.
I will say this type of finish tends to hide dings and such, making it a good choice for woods hunting. On careful inspection, I found a few more. If it had a gloss finish, they would probably stand out quite a bit more. So it is a good, decent looking stock, that will keep looking that way, with a few bumps and bangs.
At nearly 11oz less than the beech, that is a significant weight savings. If I recall correctly, the syn stock is not much lighter at 35oz. And this will not have the forearm flex/twist the syn has. Better for the bipod users.
I still haven't measured the pistol grip diameter, but it feels more like the syn stock, vs the fatter feel of the beech. I will get some measurements latter today to confirm.
-
OK, I had to get a measuring tape from the wife ;)
Syn: 4 15/16"
Turk Walnut: 5 1/16"
Beech: 5 1/2"
I wear a medium/large glove. Your hand size probably plays into which feels better to you. The Syn and Turk Walnut feels better to me than the "fattish" beech. I suspect that the "fatness" is to prevent stock breakage in this area. If I recall correctly, the first 100 Gen 1 mrods, which was like a pre-production run, had a thinner grip but had some failures. The production version was even fatter than G2 beech.
-
Mine will allow me to slide a bill all the way from the leading end of the forearm to about 1¼” before the gauge.
-

With a free floating barrel, is a free floating air cylinder critical to accuracy? I've never checked my Beech Stock or Synthetic stock to see if they touch the air cylinder or not. Quite frankly, I never even thought about it till you posted this! LOL! I guess I'm just thinking as long as the stock doesn't push the air cylinder enough to impact the barrel, all should be good. But, then again, I have no idea, so who knows...

Both the G2 syn and beech stocks have this, and the inletting in this turk walnut tells me it was intended on this. The G1 Mrod, which was only available in beech, had air tube to stock contact for the length. I do know of people that corrected some poi wandering by modding the G1 stock. I suspect crosman found the same, or wouldn't do the additional operation.

Ditto, but I bought the gun new with the Turk stock rather than as a part.

I am thinking about buying a stock so I can do a poly linseed oil job from scratch and still be shooting in the meantime...$90 is so cheap
I know right? I’m so dumb though. PA sent me a catalogue with an ammo purchase 2 weeks ago and I’ve made another 3-4 orders from them since then for various things I decided I needed, including the stock I preordered. But I just noticed yesterday that on the back of the catalogue is a code for 10 bucks off my next purchase of $50 or more... S of a B, I could’ve used that on the stock and potentially along with the free shipping offer had I gotten some ammo with it.
-
I am thinking about buying a stock so I can do a poly linseed oil job from scratch and still be shooting in the meantime...$90 is so cheap
To fix the inletting would require filling, and felt that was oo much for a new stock. The other issues I would have dealt with. I sent it back for exchange. It is about a 1-2 week process, so hope they are back in stock by then.
Anyway, thinking I will refinish it as well. Is there a chemical stripper that is recommended? Trying to avoid the sanding of the laser engraved parts.
-
Citri Strip is what used on my Akela stock to get rid of the costing put on by the Turkish maker.
-
I then sanded with 220 --> 320 --> then 400 grit paper. I added Red Mahogany stain from Minwax, then sealed the stock with raw Tung oil from a company called Milk Paint.

Sadly it depends on what state you live in. In California the good stuff isn't available because of chemical bans. So, I use the orange citrus stripper at Home Depot. It actually works pretty good if you let it sit for 24hr cycles. Use a toothbrush around the grip. That should work just fine. Cost is around $24 and you can do it in the garage and the fumes are nonexistent because of the safe nature of the stripper. Total time for a stock stripping: 4 days. Three to get the big stuff off and one day for detailing.
As for doing a poly/linseed/tru-oil application, I wouldn't settle for less than 7 coats so at least 48 hours to dry between coats.
-
Do these Crosman Turkish Walnut stocks need to be stripped? I was just thinking I'd need to go over it really well with alcohol to remove any dirt/grease, then with 000 Steel Wool, wipe it down real good and then apply the sealer. I ordered some Maccari’s Royal London Oil to do the finish. I have ready some great reviews on it, and it seems pretty easy to use.
-
Thanks guys for the replys. When I get the stock will start its own thread.
Johnie, do you have a picture or link to project? Like to see how nice it looks.
Tt, What is the good stuff? While I live in NY and probably have the same ban on chemicals, the PA border is not that far away. ;) Otherwise, I'll go citrus, which I have used before.

If so, that would be easier than using stripper. I did put some water on the inletting between gauge and trigger assy. It beaded and after a few hours hadn't soaked in the wood. So, oil or some finish on there.

Jasco with the Methylene included. Here in CA you can only buy non-methylene formulas, so I go to Nevada and do my business there. Citrus Strip is a process. It does work.

There is 100% a light oil and polymerizer on there, probably combined so they can wipe it on in one go. My guess is a gold tinted oil stain mixed with lineseed. Easy and cheap.

If you don't want to strip:
Take 800 grit sand paper and go with the grain lightly, and then add linseed. Avoid the grip area. This will get you a good base if you don't want to strip. Use 0000 ought between coats. Do 7 coats. Should look okay but you will not be able to fix any imperfections in the machining of the stock this way.

Denatured alcohol works wonders for cleaning and stripping.

Johnie, do you have a picture or link to project? Like to see how nice it looks.
Tt, What is the good stuff? While I live in NY and probably have the same ban on chemicals, the PA border is not that far away. ;) Otherwise, I'll go citrus, which I have used before.
Jasco with the Methylene included. Here in CA you can only buy non-methylene formulas, so I go to Nevada and do my business there. Citrus Strip is a process. It does work.
Side note, CA stinks

Here is my Akela; it was a luck of the draw that I received a Turkish Walnut stock that had no personality... But thye elbow work was a nice improvement.

Beautiful work, and that was the same process as above mentioned? Well done. You just avoided the grip. Did you do a toothbrush in there with the citrus stuff!?

I used one of the disposable horse hair brushes from the walmart paint section. I painted on the Citristrip, and let it sit till almost dry. I washed the stuff off real good with water and let dry a couple days. This process will raise the grain of the wood. I then sanded the stock, except for the grip stippling, until all of the old Turkish coating was gone, and the stock was smooth. The Minwax was easy to apply, and I only applied one coat, wiping away excess as I went. I let that sit a day before applying the raw Tung oil. Milk Paint makes a TRUE Raw Tung oil. I use the Tung oil on all of my MilSurp stocks.

Yes, I bought the 8oz bottle years ago, and it keeps on giving... a little goes a long way.

Thx, ordered the 8oz. I'm sure there will be another stock re-finish, sometime in my future.
I have citrus stripper.
I have TWP Dark Walnut stain that I used on deck, stairs, and dock. Grain shows through.

I rubbed the Tung oil in with a finger dipped into a small dip cup with a little Tung oil in it. I rubbed it into the stock, inside and out. The friction of the rubbing creates a little warmth that helps the wood to take the oil. I let the stock stand for 30 or so minutes, then I wipe down the stock to remove the excess oil. Let the oil cure for a day or two, and repeat. If the excess is left on, the oil can make the stock sticky, especially when outdoors. Use disposable glove, and store oil soaked rags safely... I generally wash them down with dawn dishwashing liquid and let them air-dry outside.

Don't use water: use alcohol or alcohol based cleaners that evaporate fast. Moisture I'd no bueno in the wood. It also can rust your action (it has to go somewhere, as when it is hot it evaporates out of the stock if it is wet)

I always thought linseed oil was the way to go on bare wood.

They both have been used as a poly finish but the linseed is harder, and more yellow IMO.

My replacement arrived today.
This one weighs in at 43.9oz. About 5oz more than the first, but still has savings of 6oz over the beech. Wood stocks vary in weight.
This one, doesn't seem have any of the "free" small dings. More uniform than the first, but still some blotchiness in finish in areas.
This still has the pinching at the front edge of foregrip, with air tube. I plan to keep this one and go through the refinishing process, so will find a way to correct that, too.
Also, the front sling stud is still angled, and assume that is just a feature. ;)
I'll post pictures in the other thread.

I snagged one off Amazon for $422. I expect a marauder 3.0 soon at that price. Probably one with a side lever.
Weight 7lbs 12oz
Came with a full air reservoir
Finish is a bit rough as others have mentioned. A sanding and truoil should fix that.
It’s not easy to see in the photos, but it has a beautiful tiger striped grain. She’s going to look great one I’m finished.
I’m struggling to get the photos posted.
