A sheer purchase of opportunity...
Had a couple GTA buddies over this past weekend and one of them happened to bring a new 392s. It caught my eye. I wasn't looking at these guns because I'm and old school wood and metal kinda guy but, I couldn't stop sneaking peeks at it. I was actually handling it when Betty Lou came out on the deck where we were shooting. It caught her eye too and game over.
Ended up buying that gun and making arrangements to order another. That's what happens when there are 2 shooters in the family, things are bought in pairs.
I then went on a hunt for Williams peep sights as they are pre drilled for the sights. No luck there... nowhere to be found at this point.. dang pandemic has everything upside down.
So, I 'borrowed' the peep off of 'Copper", Betty Lou's Sheridan, until they come back in stock... (PA says August). This will be Betty Lou's gun.
As for mine, I bought a Weaver rail that clamps onto the receiver. I have a holographic red dot that will be mounted.
Both rear sight options should overcome that crazy high comb on these stocks.
Anyways, I thought I would get a thread started to share our experience with these new synthetic stock versions of the classic pumpers. Mine should be in house early next week and we'll get some pics and stats going.
-
BTW.... this is the rail I ordered. Disregard where it says "rail not included". The one I ordered includes the rail.
Notice how it clamps onto the breech and not the barrel.
-
The 5DSH peeps seem to be made of unobtainium, these days. I've had one on order, through my gunshop, for over a month. Still no joy.
What I find odd is, my 78 dan isn't drilled & tapped, for a peep. No big deal. I can do it, in my sleep.
Just seems strange, that's all.
-
Yes, there was a window of time where they didn't drill and tap them. I have a '68 BS (Eddie) that wasn't D&T. I super glued the peep on and so far it's been holding. Some day I'll D&T it. But that particular gun has some significant sentimental value and I'm somewhat reluctant.
-
Just got word that the second 392s is on it's way. Maybe Saturday but probably Monday. The rail should be here Tuesday.
-
That looks like the same Rail I have on mine. Found it at a great price on Amazon. Said it was used but like new, the thing looked like new to me, not a mark on it anywhere! I had a set of super low rings and a 4X32 scope and after mounting, the height is just about perfect. I have a micro red dot like you'd mount to a pistol, that will probably work well on it also. I'd still prefer the peep sights, but it will work until those arrive. I also used a white acrylic paint pen to put a dab of white paint on the front blade sight, this will help immensely once the peep arrives. It's the same pen I use to make my tracer pellets!
I did sight it in last night before it got too dark. It was too hot to go sit 20 yards from my target, so I zeroed it from inside my back room at 37 yards. I was shooting with just 4 pumps, so I was really stretching it, bit did get it shooting 1" groups in the bulls eye. That rail make it a bit more of a chalet to load the pellets, so another plus to having the peep sights.
-
I have that Tru Glow red dot that I got from Don last weekend so we'll see how that goes before I knock the Williams peep off of Eddie.
-
I just wish the Williams were available.... :(
-
Yep! How did you find out they are due in Aug from PA? My order status just says past due.

Yes, I called... AOA said the same thing.

Ah, straight from the horse's mouth! Now, let's see how knowledgeable that horse actually is! ;D
-
More good news...
I just received word from another horses mouth that we will be shutdown all next week due to the microchip shortage. Then we will return for the following week. The next week after that we will begin our 2 week summer shutdown. Being a salaried employee, my pay will not be interupted.
Who's better than me? ... lol
-
.... reckon I better check my pellet inventory.
-
LOL! You are going to have a lot of free time on your hands! I sure hope you have a hefty stash, because they are pretty scarce now-a-days!
-
.... reckon I better check my pellet inventory.
No need to worry about pellets. I just talked to Betty Lou, she's going to get started on the honey-do list, right away.
You can thank me later. :D

Was that you? She mentioned that just this morning.... thanks alot Pal.

Friends like that, who need enemies! ;D

I knew there was a reason Rambo tried to bite him...... good dog.
-
I did have that same raised Pic rail on mine, got it from Amazon for about $32 but it was just too high plus I could not get a purchase on it to pump it up all the way without exerting pressure on the scope itself so returned it.
This is what I use now, a Mac-1 rail with some super low rings and it is *almost* perfect. I would say Still a quarter- to half-inch too high but overcomeable. I was shooting three-shot one-hole groups at 15 yards briefly before it got too hot.
Also finally managed to get the Froggy LDC adapter to fit, the thing is now as quiet at 8 pumps as the bare barrel at 2 pumps:
-
I do have a couple pistol scopes for a scout mount setup.... options are good.
-
Good thread. I’d like to hear more people’s opinion of the stock. This gun is definitely on my “to own” list. Of course I have to find a 3rd model 1400, a 2200, and a 362 first, but it’s on the list!
-
Yes the stock is high for sure and the iron sights are just about useless, but with a scope it is fine. The quality of the stock IMHO is very good and i do like it a lot. The extra 2 inches of forearm make it a bit easier to cock for sure.
I really do like this gun a lot and the velocity i been getting for a stock 392 is pretty darn good.
i will be out shooting mine this Sunday in the am and will be testing some JSB JH pellets, I'm looking forward to it.

William, feel free to add your results here if you don't want to start your own thread. I plan on adding info on mine here tomorrow morning

Got the 392S I ordered last Thursday, today. I really like the look and feel of it, which was a small concern for me as I really do not like synthetic stocks. I was also worried about the height of the stock so I ordered the Baker mount, it should be here next week.
While waiting for the mount I decided to give it a go with the open sights. I was totally surprised by what happened when I looked down the barrel and sights, I had no issues at all and my check placement., which I know places me in the minority.
It almost felt like they made this rifle just for me as everything lined up perfectly and right out of the box the sights on the gun showed me how accurate it is without a scope, tonight I only fired it 10 times with Crosman domed 14.3 gr pellets at 25 yards and got two 1” groups.
I still intend to install a scope, and I can’t wait to see what it does with that setup.
-
That's great news.... can't wait 'til we all start posting some stats.
-
Hmmm... I'm going to have to figure out how to hang that FX chrony off that stubby barrel if I'm going to post any stats!!! :o

Well dagnabit.... I had a spare ProChrono here if I had known... you could have taken it home with you.

Here is my chrono table after doing a mini valve mod to compare to your stock numbers.

Not bad numbers there Robert.

The FX hangs on okay if you stick an LDC on there...with a Froggy's adapter.

Close to Steroid numbers!

Looks like we're gonna make some progress today...
The 2nd 392s shows out for delivery this morning on USPS and the weaver rail mount show out for delivery on UPS.
I got my paper target trap set to around 15 yds to begin the sighting process.
I'll get the chrono and laptop set up right after breakfast.
-
Well now... crazy..
Betty Lou and I just finished breakfast and i made my way to the recliner to have a smoke. My phone dinged and I checked it.
"Package delivered. Left on porch".
Say what? we're sitting right here. We can see out the windows and didn't see anyone come in or go out. She usually blows the horn if we don't see her. Nothing... Nada.
Betty Lou stepped out the back door and sure enough.... there is was.
She even sneaked past Boss and Rambo.
-
Opened the inside box to find the gun in perfect condition.
While I'm waiting for the weaver rail to mount the Tru Glow red dot so in the meantime I knocked the rear iron sight off with a rubber mallet and used some Sheridan barrel mounts to attach an RWS pistol scope in the scout position.
-
Then I flipped it over, opened the pump arm and applied a strip of 1/8 closed cell foam insulation tape to quiet the clackety clack.
-
We now interrupt this thread to bring you an important message.....
UPS just pulled in and delivered the weaver rail mount.
Awesome, I'm really not a fan of scout mounted scopes.
Be back in a few......
-
OK, now we have options....
The red dot or flip the rail around for a rifle scope....
I kinda like the scope on the low weaver rings. Plenty of room with either for pellet loading.... even with my sausage fingers.
Keep in mind... I'm still waiting for Williams peeps to come back in stock.... word is August.
-
I am impressed with this Weaver rail. Solid mount to the breech. No stress on the solder at all and no cant.
-
I have the scope on mine with low rings and it sits pretty good. I still think I'll prefer the peep when it's available. It should make it lighter, quicker and easier to cock without the scope and rail to mess with.
-
Yes, I have a Williams on Betty Lou's so we get to try it all and pick the best.
-
Bill, for me the Weaver intermount did not work out, too high for me personally plus the way I Wanted to mount it was with the cantilever tail to the rear with a short scope, but on my particular gun I would have had to bend the bolt handle as it only just barely cleared the bottom of the cantilever as it was. I thought about cutting off the rail end but just returned it and got the Mac-1 (for scout-style mounting) rail. Using an ncStar 2.5x long-eye-relief scope on it.
But you know what? Like you, turns out I don't like the scout setup either - can't stand looking 25 yards downrange and barely being able to see a target, and especially one a them li'l aimin' dots located somewhere On that target!
So I just ordered the Baker intermount yesterday, got "shipped" email this morning so should be here in a few days. It accepts either dovetail or Weaver rings, so with the rings and couple of scopes I have on hand I may not need to buy anything else. We shall see!
Oh yeah, for pumping ease my plan is to use a real shorty scope mounted on an offset mount pointing towards the rear while trying to stay within my eye relief requirements, and hopefully this clears up the front breech area enough to give my left hand somewhere to hold while pumping with my right.
But if not, watch for a bunch of Benji accessories (and maybe even a Benji itself) for sale...
(just kidding!) ;D
-
I know exactly what you guys mean.
After shooting that scope setup a few times I didn't like it at all.
So I went on a scope hunt... I found a nice little Hawk Airmax AO on one of my old Daisy pumpers.
I flipped the rail around and mounted it. Now there is plenty of room for the bolt and my finger and the little Hawk is more compact than that Centerpoint was. I am used to scopes on my pumpers and I automatically pinch my fingers around the front rings to pump them. No pressure on the scope.
Here's the bad news.... IT IS HOT !!!
Looks like I'm forced to go down and clean the air conditioned shop until it cools off this evening or even tomorrow morning.
I know there is a fridge full of mini Bud Lights down there and a jug of creek water and I can hear them calling my name.
-
Well, I went out and braved the heat for a bit. 2 fans running on me.
Put 30 or so shots through it... the gun, at least this one, needs some breaking in. I was shooting CPUM pellets and at first was getting 1 1/2" groups at 15yds with 4 pumps. They began to tighten up when I just had to get in out of the heat for a bit.
The trigger is heavy but so are many pumpers... I'll do some work in it. After all.... tinkering is half the fun, right?
I'll also look in the end of that muzzle, you know how Crosman likes to paint the inside of a muzzle... ???
At 15 yds, I see no reason to pump this gun more than 4 times. And maybe out to 20 or so.
PA specs say 3-10 pump strokes... yeah right... I pumped it 8 times and it was all I could do to get that last pump in... granted I've had total reverse shoulder replacement on my left arm and now need rotator cuff surgery on my right but, dang!
At 8 strokes the gun has a loud report... it would not be backyard friendly at all for those of you that have that concern.
I like the feel of the gun... it's compact and easy to wield... even with the scope I have on it.
More later.
-
Had a bite to eat and went back out into the Suzie Home Maker oven.
Check this out...
As I said I was shooting the 14.3 Ultra mags and was getting some poor results. So, I thought I would go to extreme opposite and try something heavy. The JSB Jumbo Monster redesigned pellets at 25.39.
4 pumps at the same 15yds. stacked these things.
I'm done for today... I'll get out in the morning.
-
Out at the sighting bench this morning. It's 6:40 am and temp is 73 with heavy humidity.
Printed some 10 meter card stock targets and I'm at 15yds. I have 6 or 7 pellets to try.
-
Guys.... this particular gun wants no part of our standard weight .22 pellets. It wants heavy stuff and that's it !!!
Lemme get some pics.
-
Typical.... the camera battery is dead....
Had to use the cell phone.
Anyways...
First pic is the target.
Second pic is the pellets in respective order.
-
2nd from the left on row 2 is the Jumbos.
2 holes are dead nut... Betty Lou opened the door behind me on the third and I pulled it low. I didn't even know she was up yet... lol
-

Again.... 4 strokes from bags at a measured 15yds.
-
Think I'm gonna have a look at that trigger group... it's a bit clunky and heavy for me.... I think I remember this group from the Benjamin 392 from days gone by.... :-\
-
Yep... same ole clunky trigger cartridge.
Pulled it part. Polished the contact points with the Dremel and wire wheel then applied moly on all contacts and pivots.
Squeezed the return and lawyer springs and put it back together. Took most of the gritty out but not much of the pull weight.
Not a whole lot you can do for them. I also put some moly on the bolt but that wasn't too bad out of the box.
-
You can put a much lighter spring behind the trigger. I can't remember what one I used, in the ones I did, but, it just has to be enough to get the trigger back to it's forward position.
Surprised you didn't chop off the anti-decocking tab.
-
Yeah, I forgot to cut that off. I'm gonna run to the hardware and look for some lighter springs after breakfast... I'll cut it off when I go back in.
-
Nice! Were those 3-shot groups, Bill? I did read on some other posts about how the 392 seems to favor shooting (lobbing?) them heavier pellets.
-

Yes, three shot groups. That would have been a 1 hole group if BL would not have rattled me.
This gun will continue to smooth out. That's been my experience with them.
They also tend to change pellet types as they do... more forgiving, if you will.
I once read a review from an experienced brass barrel pumper guy... can't remember who it was but, his name would be familiar to many of us. He said he never cleans his brass barrels. He just adds a small squirt of WD40 down the barrel now and then. Maybe he even shoots a soaked cleaning pellet down it.... can't completely remember.
-
Scott...
I put a weaker trigger return spring in. Just enough to make the trigger return. That, combined with the other things I did has cut that pull weight nearly in half. I don't have a tested so I can't confirm that but I compared it to Betty Lou's unmodded trigger pull. And it's much smoother too.
I found one long enough to cut in half so I could do Betty Lou's too but, as luck would have it, one of them sproinged off into the abyss of the work bench... :o I heard it hit the ceiling and the wall, then it was gone. Betty Lou likes a heavier trigger but, I'll find it.
I didn't cut the decocking knob off... I don't mind not having that feature. I did polish and lube it so it don't drag.
-
Ya know... there are guys talking on some of the other threads about higher price guns being worth the extra money because you don't have to work on them...
For me, this tinkering and the satisfaction I get from it is priceless. Y'all won't ever have to worry about me running those big money guns out of stock.... they're all yours.... ;)
-
Oh yeah, just remembered..... no overspray in the barrel that I could see.
-

Yeah when I decided to get back into I told myself to enjoy every step of the way, including the little fiddly things that bring so much enjoyment to many of us.
Heck, due to Covid even just waiting for a shipment of something and hoping it gets there sooner than expected is like a whole new part of our hobby now...
-
When I am not waiting for something to be delivered, no matter how small it is, I feel like an empty nester.

Cool beans ;D
I cut the tabs off, so I can decock it, while I'm waiting for a squizzel to show up. I don't like keeping tension on the hammer spring, that long. Just like I keep my Dan in the gun cabinet, with 2 pumps, and a pellet in the chamber.
-
The 392s will pump up without cocking it. So, pump it up and wait for your target, then just cock and add lead. And you can store it with a couple pumps as I do all my pumpers.
-
Still gotta chrony my 397S
One observation: the hammer seems to bounce a good bit......really hums after firing.
Is that typical?
-
Hmmm... I didn't notice that... I'll have to pay attention when I get into Betty Lou's gun today.
-
397S
Crosman Premier .177 domed 10.5g
5 pumps 587fps
6 pumps 607f[s
7 pumps 624fps
But, it is not broken in.
-
Sorry, got a little side tracked... parts came in for the Air Speed.
-

Don’t know about the synthetic stocks, but i’ve noticed the hammer bounce at lower no. pumps on the wood stocks... once you get up to about 5 pumps or more it seems to be gone on my wood stock models.
-
Setback....
Williams Peep ain't gonna work for Betty Lou.
Can't sight it low enough and that high comb it too high.
I ordered another 3 pc. rail mount like I put on mine and she'll get a scope.
I'll move ahead to the trigger work on her's and wait till it comes in.
-
That actually saved me money on new Williams peeps.
-
That actually saved me money on new Williams peeps.
Did you cancel the order for both? Wondering if I should do the same and just stick to the scope?
-
Yes, I cancelled PA when I found the other site.... I cancelled that one when I began to smell a rat.
I ordered the 3 piece rail for Betty Lou's gun this morning.
BTW... I'm pretty impressed with where I am with mine right now... other than it being pellet picky.
It does not like lighter pellets... I'm shooting the JSB Jumbo Monster 25.39 and it's hole on hole at 15 with 4 pumps.
I'm hoping it will break in and give me more pellet options.... we'll see.
Add a lighter trigger return spring and squeeze the lawyer spring shut some... then polish and lube the contacts.
-
I think I'm going to cancel my order also. Need to call them tomorrow. So far I'm happy with the AV mount with low rings and the 3-9X32 UTG Hunter scope I have mounted on it.
-
have you tried to pump past 8 yet? WOW, that's a workout. It says 3 to 10... I'm good with 4 or 5.
-

LOL! 5 is as far as I've gone thus far, and only did that once. I'm good at 4 pumps! ;D
-
Just had to go for it once... 8 was all I wanted. I could see my shoulder coming apart. I don't have $30k around for another one.
-

Yea, I have to be carful of my wrist, I'm trying to avoid being carved on as long as possible! :P
-
Paul, what pellets are you using?
-
Paul, what pellets are you using?
16 grain AA's, they do pretty well.
-
I'll have to try those. It don't like the 14.3 or 15s.
-
I did a 5-shot 8-pump group at 25 yds. today but only four landed well, by the fifth shot my aiming, holding and breathing were kinda shaky from all that pumping. No wonder Biathlon is an Olympic event.
After grouping just average with JSB 14.35s the other day, today I used 14.3 CPDomes and it did much better, that last flier up to the right was biathlon-induced. And by then there was the blistering heat so I quit... :P
-
Is that using the iron sights or scoped? That's a great group! Nice shooting!
-
5 shot 8 pump group and I'd be done.
Pretty impressive how much power this little gun builds per pump....
at least it feels that way.
-
I think there is an internal spring tensioner that increases with each pump! :o
-
Found a suitable trigger return spring and got Betty Lou's trigger done. I did cut the anti decocking nub off of hers. Don't know why... I just did. Next time in I'll find some thin brass washers for the pivot pins. Maybe a trip to the old school hardware later.
-

Just take a dremel cut off wheel and chop that tab off that I circled in the pic below.

avatar,
IMHO, the cutting of the anti de-cocking nub is a very, very big deal with me. I did it on all my airguns including my Airforce guns. If I could not de-cock, I would most likely not own the gun, that feature is that important to me as I want one in the chamber and cock and shoot when I want to in one semi quick motion.
As I'm walking around in the woods or waiting all I want to do is quietly and quickly cock the gun. I'm not about to walk around with a round in the chamber, spring tension on and relying on a mechanical safety --- not going to happen.

I get it... just probably won't spend too much time in the woods with these 2 guns. They are more for Betty Lou and I to enjoy plinking games together like we do with many other pairs of pumper we have.
-

Thanks Paul it was a nice lucky group till that last one.
I used an ncStar 2.5-power pistol (or "super long eye relief") scope but to tell you the truth, the reason I stuck on that huge black shoot-n-see dot is because that's all I can barely see at 25 yards with such a low power scope!
I am supposed to get my Baker intermount today and we will see how she (and I) do with some real magnification so I can actually see the target's aim point...

Blessed (and so lucky) that some among us have a wonderful signif. other to share the joys of airgunning with. My wife has no interest in guns... ::)

Just take a dremel cut off wheel and chop that tab off that I circled in the pic below.
Thank you! That was a quick and easy mod! I also had a spring from my Harbor Freight assortment that fit the trigger too, so now that's lighter also. One of these days when I'm feeling really energetic, or just bored to tears, I may tear back into it and polish all the surfaces that matter! ;D
-
Yep, you will be surprised how gritty it was once you polish and lube those surfaces. The lighter return spring gives a light 1st stage type feel then kind of a stop then a quick snap to fire. Very predictable.
-
So, I stumbled onto a barely used 392S w/Williams peep sight...........couldn't resist.
Bought it from an auburn fan................UGH !
-
My gun must be breaking in. Out of curiosity I loaded up a few GAMO 15gr domes. Pumped 3 times and actually got some usable groups.. sub half inch at 15 yds.

At least on mine the slight inside-muzzle overspray seems to be eroding and fading...breaking in, indeed! 8)

Ordered my new 392s today.... should be here next Thursday!
-
Just lining up the different ring height options available to me in my meager collection while awaiting my compact BugBuster scope, which should be here any minute (tracking says between 2:15pm-5:15pm and it's 3:00pm now):
*EDIT: forget to mention, this is with the Baker over-breech scope rail mounted...together with the Mac intermount I now have options, muwahahahahaaaaah... :o

Are your rings made by B- Square ? I have found them to be some of the lowest I have found for 3/8" 22/airgun rings.

I have something different . May be my final solution for scope mounting the 392.

Did you make those?

Yes. I modified a set of rings by cutting a slot to fit. The weaver rail that comes with the Air Venturi intermount is not used, these bolt directly to the mounts.
The scope will be low and have more clearance to load pellets without the ghastly weaver rail.
-
I like it.

Never looked at that option, took what I could get I guess ???

Me likey! ;D

Just thought of something.... does the bolt handle clear the scope?

Going to test fit it tomorrow. I expect the bolt handle will need to be heated red hot and bent. Even if it barely cleared, I would bend it anyway.

Yes, the first one in the ring line-up photo is a B-Square, although I do not think it is the absolute lowest, but turns out I could not use it any way since I could not get the bolt handle to clear when cocking.
I'm using a compact Bug Buster scope with closer-up eye relief so I must position it more to the rear - but this also helps because it places the scope further back for better hand clearance while pumping.

Got a question for those of you who have one of these synthetic stocked 39x guns in hand.... do the front sights on most of them still lean off center( usually to the left), or has crosman corrected that on these new guns?
Both of my wood stocked 392’s have a pronounced lean to the left, while my 397 is pretty well centered.
-
Yes both my 397S and 392S have the leaning front sight.
DO NOT try to straighten - it will break.
Or I should say my 397S used to have a leaning front sight - none now.
-
Haven't noticed that on either of ours.... I'll have a closer look.
As for the bolt hitting the rail.... when I first put the mount on I hung it over the back of thee receiver. I had to turn it around. I'll most likely just end up cutting the excess rail off.

I learned about the brittle metal in the front sight too. Mine leaned left on my first 392 so I thought "Just a little tweak to the right". Bad decision, but I had enough left after the break to file a dovetail in the stump and fit a modified bead sight to correct the lean and thinned side to side to match the stump. A little JB Weld helps it stay in place and is a better sight for the Williams Peep too.(http://)
-
Those front sights will be a non issue in my case... I never plan to use them.
-
Here is what I did after snapping off the top of the sight, then I removed it and put on an adapter.
-
Thanks for the replies on the front sights. As Bill said, it’s pretty much a non issue for me on this model, as i’m buying the synthetic raised comb stock mostly for scope use anyway.
However, I will be mounting a Williams peep along with using a Mac1 scope base. I like that set up in case something goes wrong with the scope on a hunt, I can just remove scope base and all and use the iron sights. It’s a bit distracting if the front sight leans though when using the irons.
Maybe i’ll get lucky and this one will be on straight. ;)
Looking forward to trying out the synthetic stock!

Y'all got anything against the Dennis Baker 1 piece scope mount??
Ain't 'zacely cheap, but pretty neat.......
-
The Baker mount is solid and mounts very good on receiver with two grub screws.
One thing - there are only two ( one front and one back ) Picatinny cross channels if you use them.

Yes there's that one thing, the pic rail grooves are only two, and spaced well apart.
One way to get around that (if you have Pic rings) is to use one of these adapters below (I bought and used the first set before discovering the second, cheaper set although I can't speak to how that second one works):

As I hold that the only stupid question is one not asked,
What is the function of a Picatinny cross slot?
If provided to give a scope ring a slot for a set screw to anchor the ring from sliding due to recoil,OK.
But that would not be needed in pumper applications.
So..............?????
-
Although there may be different designs I'm unaware of, the Pic ring bases of mine all have a crossbolt underneath that slots into those transverse grooves so I'm effectively locked into only using those two positions on the Baker mount.
-
OK. Got it.
Not all my scope rings have cross screws...........
My head is much heavier now.......
-
I received the 392s today.
Nice gun except for a couple of scratched where the rear sight was removed, but I knew that going in.
I'll figger out how to touch them up.....
Now, the Williams peep sight.
That critter is SO low that I can't get down far enough to see the target...I have to raise up the butt of the stock on my shoulder.
Looks like a scope mount in in my future.......

Yeah they seem to have designed the cheekpiece height of that synthetic stock to be just in between anything useful! It can be maddening!! ;D ;D
After realizing the irons sights would be too low, I tried a variety of scope rings that were just a hair too high but finally settled on a compromise height that works just okay.
And this was only after cycling through the regular Crosman too-loose/too-wobbly intermounts, the AV too-high intermount, the Mac-1 too-short IA intermount, and now finally settling on the Baker unit with its only real shortfall being the only-2-grooves Picatinny rail (although if using dovetails you have the entire length).
But even this one does still require figuring out creative ring mounting points to get both proper eye relief plus optimum offhand placement space for best pumping geometry.

Today the temps outside had gone down to *only* 108F by the afternoon.
Had some time.
Had some new H&N 18.13-gr Barracuda 18s.
Had my freshly scoped (BugBuster 3-12x32) 392S.
After a few sighters I proceeded to create a sub-half-inch hole with four shots.
But then the low fifth shot happened because I pumped only 7 times instead of 8 from getting all excited about the nice 25-yard group that was developing.
So despite the wind starting to kick up by now, I busted out a nice fancy cardstock target I made with reactive stickers. Shot five more but it did not group as well by this time (bottom two photos w/quarter)...so it must have been the wind. :D
-
...by the way at 8 pumps the 18s were traveling at 568fps...
-
Just hearing 8 pumps makes my arm hurt.... :o
The 3 pc. rail came in for Betty Lou's gun was delivered this morning. I mounted it on the gun during my lunch break.
I need to look through my scopes and decide on the best one for it. I think I have a set of low weaver rings like the ones on mine.
Saturday begins our 2 week summer shutdown. With weekends included, that gives me 16 days off.
We'll see some side by side comparisons of these twins.
I've already done the trigger group mods to hers, same as I did mine.
I'm sure hers will need some break in as did mine.
-
Ordered a 392s direct from Crosman today. Look forward to it joining the meager collection here. Choose it based on several of the discussions here.
-
Just thought of something.... does the bolt handle clear the scope?
Going to test fit it tomorrow. I expect the bolt handle will need to be heated red hot and bent. Even if it barely cleared, I would bend it anyway.
I test fitted the mounts and happy with them. The bolt barely touches the scope tube. I will have to slightly bend the bolt for clearance.
The rings are machined so the front is 1mm taller than the rear ring with the matching angle to keep the saddles parallel. The height difference keeps the scope from running out of elevation adjustment on a high performance 392.
Going to cut angle on the ring sides to taper down to the AV lower section.
-
Looks good Charles... nice job! 8)
-
Yep... looks great.

The Buck rail compact scope came in today and wouldn't you know... Betty Lou don't like it.
It has those 'driveway' lines in the reticle. She hates those lines. She says they distract her.
So, tomorrow I'll be doing some scope swapping.

I got clearance from the memsahib to order one from Crosman at $159.90 but by the time I got to the web site they were sold out. :(
Still saving my shekels for a 362 I guess.

I see the 362 as it will need to ad moding cost for sure :)

Yeah, I’m contemplating a 397, but I’m also thinking about a Winchester 1977 XS. If I procrastinate for couple more days the 397 will probably sell out too. Then the cheaper Winnie will be an easy choice! ;D
I am definitely getting a 362 when they come out but I’ve got my lady feeling sympathetic right now and I need to pick a gun while she is still feeling generous.

You will want a steel breech right out of the gate so you might as well tack that right on top of the price of that gun. Then you'll want to tame the bark... and the list will go on and on.
I learned awhile back.... those lego guns are fun as heck to tinker and build but, you will never get your money back.... not even close.

Yeah I’ve got a .22 steel breech on my 2240. I will probably swap the the two breeches when I get the 362.
LDC’s are nice but I just don’t need one. I’ve got two guns that came with them but I don’t see my self spending money on one. I am notoriously cheap and here I am agonizing about a $200 gun. Go figure.
