I tried posting this last night, had it all typed up, inserted the photos which were too big and when I hit "Back" to upload resized pics all the text was gone And i was too tired to start all over again.
This will be a shorter version.
It was hot here yesterday and my wife and daughter went to the flower show in Philadelphia until early afternoon so I had several hours to do a lot of shooting behind my house at 30 and 50 yds. ;D
After dinner I got the "Hog huntin?" text from my buddy and i was there in a flash. He takes care of a 90 acre property and takes me with him as a guest. Powder guns are allowed and we deer hunt when in season. He has a Benji break barrel 177 which he uses for squirrel at his home and as dispatch when trapping but has not dropped into our rabbit hole yet... I think he is only a half step away though. He is pretty impressed with my AGs.
So as we were pulling in, there was a groundhog in a football field on my right. I jumped out, grabbed my 22 Akela, loaded it and set up across the hood on the bipod. This groundhog was a little under 100 yds but a head shot dropper her. I did not go to check her out at that point but 90 minutes later it was gone and there were three young fox milling around the area so I believe it was dragged off by momma fox or maybe a yote.
Next up is the big girl in the pics. She was 68 yds facing away. I was resting my non trigger hand and put a Barracuda 18 in the back of her noggin' just behind her left ear heading towards her right eye. She dropped and dragged herself two feet and was done.
There were a few other chucks but could not get a good shot.
Finally another one at 102 yds. watched for a few minutes and put one in the side of her head. Til' I got over to her she had dragged herself under a building and was done when I got there. I could see her there all dead but could not get to her to recover or take a pic. Oh well.
Would have liked to take one of the foxes but I don't know what kind of energy they will need over 100 yds and I did not want to wound it.

Well I remember how big my Akela was, and that Ghog in the photos is huge! Congrats!

Wow.....Good shooting Ray !
A really Big ground hog taken with a very nice looking bull-pup rifle.
Best Wishes - Tom

Thank you on both counts Mr. Tom.
It is the only bullpup I have ever owned, it shoots real well and I seem to be able to shoot it better than my long guns. I have had it about a year now and it is my go to gun for most things. My PP750 is my other for shorter ranges.

Ray, excellent long distance shots on all those ghogs with your Akela! That is one big girl, nice photos!
-
Thanks Randall, I wish could have gotten pics of the other two.

Nice shot Ray!

Nice long range shooting and great pics!
Is there a summer fox season in PA?

Thanks Harry!
No not that I am aware of, but a guy can dream! I probably should have worded my first post differently.

Keep up the good work. I would never dare shoot a G-hog at 100yds in fear of being off a little (or a lot) and not recovering it. So I give you a lot of credit.
I have shot hundreds of G-hogs with airguns and the farthest one was 44 yards. Average distance on most of them in my yard is 25 yards, but I have recovered every single one since 2007. Even before that when I used to shoot them with 22LR HV hollow-points (Win PowerPoint HP and Mini Mag HP) and the farthest I shot one was 70 yards. I always went for a head shot, and still do, which is why I like to keep the distance short to put the pellet in the fuse box and anchor them every time.

I just wanted to add a closing statement to this thread.
This permission is a summer camp. When the staff and kids show up we are done until fall.
Last year we had a little more time due to Covid.
This past Sunday I was in the middle of reeling in a decent largemouth and we got word that the camp was full open this year and they wanted to keep it isolated as much as possible, and that makes sense.
Well that's the end of our fun until Fall. A week or so earlier than we had expected. :(
Bugger.
We were not able to get there Friday or Saturday for any hunting and I had been hoping for a little more of the above action.

Oh well just think of it as your honorable deed keeping the campgrounds safe for the little kiddies, and you are thus only called upon to do your noble pesting duties when the kids are not around. 8)
(yeah I know, I'd still rather be shootin'...) ;D

Yep!
"Oh well just think of it as your honorable deed keeping the campgrounds safe for the little kiddies, and you are thus only called upon to do your noble pesting duties when the kids are not around. [/size]"
This is exactly the excuse I tell my wife. ;)
Its like summer is over ... but in reverse. ???
This gives me more time to get to my dairy permission. Problem there is I think we are doing too good of a job. Not quite so many bird targets of late.
And there is no fishing there.
Both perms. are no hunting on Sunday.
