Anyone ever tried to mold pellets out of ice??
-
Ice might be problematic, but maybe pykrete stands a chance doing better. Most lightweight pellet alloys are around 7x more dense than ice, so both would make really lightweight pellets. Then again, maybe that might be a useful property in a large bore application...hmmm.
-
Ice? ??? Never tried it, but an interesting proposition... Just a couple random thoughts, but I don't think you could shoot an ice projectile in anything other than a smoothbore-I have a feeling that the squeeze from rifling would crush/fragment it otherwise... You may also find that it wouldn't hold up to a high-powered platform, either... To much shock in the bore and it may be crushed again, low and slow over a distance is probably your best bet.
Still; not a bad idea in a cooler climate; lead-free, biodegradable, renewable, an endless supply of raw material for "casting", and ease of making them... Though unless you have a multi-cavity mold, it might be a slow process...
Any specific caliber/uses in mind?
Jesse
-
No specific caliber....just the musings of an idle mind on a long bicycle ride....
I have always wondered if a coroner could adequately determine cause of death if one choked
to death on a piece of ice, which them melted........
I have heard of glass bullets, so merging the two ideas was kinda like inventing peanut butter cups........
-
Ice pellets? Snow balls in hel!
-
Pyecrete definately. I'd try paper pulp. Think frozen spitball! :D
-
I go out of my way to keep water out of my guns... I don't think I'll be putting any in them.. ;)
-
I have heard of glue gun bullets.............. ;) used in CF pistol's

How about dry ice???
-
Talk about vapor trail... ;D
-
Just sayin'; you need a Co2 gun to shoot dry ice.... ;D ;D ;D
And if you heated the barrel; wouldn't it be kind of like one of those Gyrojet rocket bullets? ;)
Jesse
-
It just keeps getting deeper...
-
Seasoning the barrel would be easy.
#1. Pour 1oz cold distilled water into breech with mizzle of gum pointed down.
#2. Place gun in freezer until barrel is properly cooled.
#3. Load gun with ice pellet and shoot in a safe direction.
-
How about gum pellets. :P
I find it lot where I work under desks, and in places you'd least likely to expect. It's typically hard as a rock.
-
Now I'm starting to wonder if we all have a beater gun that will shoot anything that will fit in the barrel?
BB / pellet / dart / wad of paper / tooth pick / match stick / salt / ETC. (the salt works great on flying bugs)

Yep. It’s called a “B-3”. ;D

When I was doing a barrel swap on one of my 1322's, I turned it into a shotgun, by chambering a .22cal pellet, then front loading 10 .177 pointed pellets, then I got paper and a using a bamboo skewer and shoved it in to hold it all in.
Pumped it up 10x and it was interesting. The spread at 10 yards was like a modified choke. It was pretty tight.
To see if that did any damage, I shot a few pellets and it was just as accurate... I then repeated it like 20x and it still shot just fine.
So if you need an impromptu shotgun to act kind of like "snake shot" there's your answer. Get a dedicated 1322 and use it for that... lol
Do I recommend it on a good gun?? -- absolutely not. But hey, I had fun and the experiment went very, very well.

That's really cool 'shotgun' idea and I have a beater gun that will I'd try that with.
To The OP: I really want to see the ice pellet idea proven or otherwise.

I had a B5 and like an idiot I sold it. Still looking for a replacement.

As a kid, me and the neighbors stuffed everything that would fit in our Red Ryder's and cheap pistols. Partly out of curiosity, partly because we were poor and would run out of BBs.

^^
I used to do that with some surplus 760's that were kicking around that didn't hold up too much pressure, but still kind of shot. I used to also do dandelion shooting with just the air, pretty much point blank. 'Cause I had nothing else better to do...
I also used to do more dangerous (really stupid) things when I got older, that I'd never dare mention on the Interwebz or in 2021 in general... But hey, that's what the 90's were all about. lol
I look back and wonder how I'm still here...

You and me both. I'm still here and have all of my limbs, but that was a different time. I still use one of my 760's for bug deterrent. Sometimes just air, or if it needs more juice add a little salt. It will work like a high powered bug assault gun 8)

I like the idea that someone mentioned before,... about glue gun projectiles. Cut off the stick and use as is (assuming fit is ok) or "cast" your own with some hot glue. It would be like rubber bullets I suppose. The seal should be real good. The lighter weight should make for some impressive fps. A little silicone spray should make them less grippy. A break barrel would be a real good test subject. (I have none)

You should have been around in the late '70's and early '80's, I remember this one time at band camp, wait wrong story.
The kid down the street had a 2 older bothers that always had a bag or 3 of M80's and I had sling shots, that was fun.
We also did stupid things with our BB guns, won't say but heavy coats and eye pro was required as well as a 3 pump rule... ;)

Hot glue bullets can be cast in a mold, release agent is a real good idea. Release agent is hard to remove when you want to cast lead bullets again.
Standard glue sticks are .45 caliber, small glue sticks are 30 cal.

Here is some more info on Glueboolits, they even mention using air guns/molds also,
Lots of reading, Poster Banger Jim has the best info on the methods etc.

I had a 760 that i sawed the barrel off of, and it was subject to be loaded with anything that would fit into it, or down it....including bicycle spokes a few times ;D ;D ;D

Love my SB 760

I used my SB 760 to start the camp fire this weekend.
Loader her up with strike anywhere matches and shot at the fire pit.
I took a while, but I was not in any hurry ;D

I do believe that is the very first time I've ever heard about incendiary airgun ammo.... ;)

It is easy and even fun to take an engineering approach to solve the technical challenges. However, I think that asking the OP's question about ice projectiles that melt and leave no evidence sounds like something that should not be discussed on an airgun forum. Or any public forum... The reason being the, "why would you want to do that?"
Any official legitimate purpose has access to more serious hardware and immunity from having to explain projectile fragments. Any unofficial purpose is automatically illegitimate. Thus, even providing ideas could be deemed aiding and abetting. Thus, I vote this thread be nipped in the bud.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm,
I clearly stated that my motivation on this topic was "just the musings of an idle mind on a long bicycle ride...."
I have no agenda. No "illegitimate....purpose..."
I rather resent the implication.
Should you be concerned with forum liability issues, you should pursue your concerns with those who ask
assistance with sighting in scopes in order that they can hit what they aim at....
Or which air rifle or pellet has the best ballistics or carries the most impact energy......or........ ????
Certainly innocent requests for target shooters or plinkers or game hunters (depending on the "game" in question) but could be considered enabling to those who would use their airguns to more nefarious ends.......
-
Ice pellets? I highly doubt those are on any hitman's 'must have' list.
And as for me.. maybe interesting for some but I'm not gonna put any frozen liquid of any type in my guns.
Let's try to be nice to each other. I'm sure many of have eaten a worm or mud pie at some point in our lives just to see how it tastes. And just maybe, some liked it.
-
I don't think Subscriber meant to accuse you of anything; but if you think about your initial topic plus this statement:
No specific caliber....just the musings of an idle mind on a long bicycle ride....
I have always wondered if a coroner could adequately determine cause of death if one choked
to death on a piece of ice, which them melted........
I have heard of glass bullets, so merging the two ideas was kinda like inventing peanut butter cups........
You've got to admit that the two together could paint a creepy picture... So while I don't think anybody was accusing you of nefarious intent; I think maybe you could see how it could look "off" without necessarily being "off"... Though if I was to be perfectly honest; (again just my honest feelings here!) I wish that I had not posted in this thread...
JMHO, only trying to point out that an innocent musing in your head, when put down on paper can look entirely different than what it was...
Jesse
-
I think it's best to take a different direction in this thread or it will have to be locked up.
Often times the initial topic of a thread is not against forum rules but it certainly begs to go into that direction.
Just for the record, if not for humans thinking outside the box we may very well still be dragging our wives around by the hair.... just sayin'.
-
I still like the dry ice gyrojet pellet idea... I have actually wondered if an externally heated barrel could not speed things up in a PCP, since the air cools as it expands; the key would be keeping the temp consistent for a low ES...
A Stirling airgun of sorts?

I guess, in many instances, the world is not ready for my creative notions......
The inside of my head is a very cluttered place......some of the clutter even scares ME !!
Anyway, onward and upward.

It is true in todays world, if you even alude to bodily harm you will be on a watch list.
I know what's in this thread is all in fun, and we all know what is right and wrong, but big brother still watches.

I know what you mean, I have come up with some crazy ideas, but building them is a completely differant story.
Knowing and building are two differant things, the latter will bring prison time. 8)

I am rebuilding a 1984 C-10 Chevy truck.
There are things needing fixing that I never even knew existed.
Currently I am rebuilding a damper door or blend door for the under dash heater box.
The lower bushing portion broke, and there was no way to locate it in the housing,
and no way to affix the actuator arm to rotate it.
So I am replacing the 3/16" actuator shaft with 3/8 aluminum, and fixing it to the door w/machined aluminum tabs secured to the 3/8" shaft w/set screws............took me a week of imagineering to come up with that, but I believe it is gonna work!
-
Keep it up Ron, we need folks like you!
-
I don't think building a truck will get you in much trouble. ;D
Well maybe I should wait and see what you build 8)
