Title: Custom Spring Guides
Post by: fsa46 on May 05, 2021, 03:04:26 PM
The custom spring guides are known to take the twang/buzz out of springers, but do they improve the accuracy at all ?

if they do, it is to a very small degree... this kind of question is like when you gal ask you id these jeans make my but look big !!  Good fitting guides improves the shot cycle.

If you can't get custom guides, add some Tune in a Lube grease on the spring. Buzz gone. It made my HW95 perfect.

If the gun is more accurate with fitted guides I can't tell it with my shooting skills!

A twangy boingy gun affects me. I affect the accuracy.
You can also polish the ends of the spring so it spins freely. A binding spring causes torque in the gun.

I learned that "goop on the spring" will also make the poi "temperature dependent" if the temp goes up or down during the shooting session. Decades ago when using "keavy tar" to kill spring twang I had the poi shift 2" at only 25 yards during a field target match when I did the sight-in with snow flurries and the temp rose into the mid 50s during the match. IMHO, the best way to kill twang is to simply use a snug fitting guide. Another issue with enough "spring goop" to kill twang is that it will get slung off the spring onto the receiver tube ID and create "issues" if it gets pushed past the piston seal to diesel. Maccari "heavy tar" from years past............

If you think tight spring guides help accuracy then they do.  If you think that they do not help accuracy then they don't.
However, for most people they will enjoy shooting that gun more so they get better at shooting it.
That tight space between your ears makes all the difference in the world. 8) ;)

The pellet is probably out of the barrel by the time you hear the spring vibration so it is unlikely to be interfering with accuracy. That said, perception is reality for humans therefore if you believe it has an impact your mind will have a strong confirmation bias and associate any deficiency with the spring noise.

IMO, jm tar is one of the most misused products used in our hobby. I admit, when I slot tune one of my new springers, i cram a generous amount of tar to stifle spring buzz as well as getting things lubed up for wear in. Once I tear a rifle down for a tune, just a powder coated amount of tar is all that is needed. More as a corrosion inhibitor than a buzz killer. I do Think a tight fitted guide does improve the shot cycle and accuracy post shot cycle because the shooter doesn't feel and/or anticipate the recoil and buzz near as much and can concentrate on the target and trigger pull. I very often see others (as well as myself) failling one key aspect of shooting,...and that is follow through. Just like swinging a golf club or tossing a ball through a hoop, follow through is of major importance for accuracy and consistency. A buzzing spring and non smooth shot cycle is an undesirable distraction when shooting, and a properly fitted guide cancels this out if the shooting equation. Thats my 2¢

Avator and Yogi said it best.  When guns more enjoyable to shoot, you will shoot better, and probably more often.  So I'd day it affects it, indirectly.

I'm not sure it is the same for all rifles.

My latest experience with the LGV/Spezial

(here: https://www.ctcustomairguns.com/hectors-airgun-blog/noch-zwei-weitere-grossartige-damen (https://www.ctcustomairguns.com/hectors-airgun-blog/noch-zwei-weitere-grossartige-damen) )

tells me that some architectures are more sensitive to spring vibrations reaching the muzzle and affecting the FIRING cycle BEFORE we even hear the shot go off.

Consider that vibrations in steel travel at between 10,000 and 11,000 fps

So, there IS ENOUGH time for the vibrations originated in the release and bounce-everywhere loose spring to reach the muzzle before the pellet leaves the barrel.

Extreme architectures where there are large differences in the axes of piston, shoulder support, trigger hand support and LOS are the most prone to this. Slender architectures where rearward motion and vibrations have little "leverage" to make the muzzle move are less sensitive.

I sent an OEM spring from a new HW50S to Motorhead for treatment a week ago.  That treatment consisted of having a custom fitted guide and top hat made for that OEM spring.  I changed out the current OEM spring with the Motorhead customized spring this morning.  There is a day and night difference in this newest 50S!  There is NO twang nor wobble, just a solid thump when fired.

Yes, that modification made the rifle more accurate.

FWIW-My Motorhead tuned HW 50S shoots better, IE smoother and 15 fps faster than my Vortek PG2 kitted HW 50S.  I think it is more accurate too, so it is... ;D
