Title: Bullet casting book - FREE
Post by: Greg_E on May 02, 2021, 02:14:57 PM
Surprised this isn't a sticky post. For those wanting to get into casting, there is a free book on this subject at this website, there is also a free PDF version through a link on the left side of this first page.

I saw this recommended several times on bullet casting forums and have read many different sections while I was researching this topic. I've now started reading the PDF from the beginning to fill in the holes.

Thanks, Greg
That's a nice find!
It's highly unlikely I'll be casting pellets & slugs anytime soon.
But now when reading posts about the process there will be a base understanding.

I've cast a few in 357 now, but not enough to really know a lot yet. Got 20 pounds of lead and 1 pound of tin on the way, a couple moulds, 20 pound furnace/melting pot. So I'm on my way to a better understanding. I think my dad had one of the Lyman books, I'll have to remember to thumb through it next time I'm there, just for comparison.

I still need to track down the oldest Lyman book I can find, the older books normally had netter detail than newer books. Need to see what versions my dad has and give at least one a read as well.

And I need to get my furnace set up and practice!!!

I'm not sure about wheel weights for airguns, seems like it might be kind of hard. For WW I would definitely powder coat and then run through a sizing die to reduce the amount of lead to crush in the rifling.

Yeah, WW is too hard for just about everything. Used to be getting the hardest lead was the goal to prevent leading. Turns out softer is the real answer.
