Could not get this gun to do well at 20-30yards at all.tried a few different scopes and many pellets.BUT today i took it out to 45 yards and it just couldnt miss.anyone ever have a gun that just couldnt do anything or at least much at a closer range?Never had one do quit like this but the accuracy is amazing now.Went back down to 25-30 yards again and still a no go for accuracy.Maybe a 1 1/2 to 2 in groups at best.at the 45 yard mark an inch easily.

What I've noticed with the FWB that I recently got back from her tuning is that it seems to be more accurate at 100 feet than at 75. I have no reason why- doesn't make sense to me at all. I'll be picking up my 34 from the PO tomorrow- will let you know what I find with it specifically.

You didn't say what pellets. If your spring gun is packing more heat then try a little heavier pellet to tame it. I don't recall having an issue from 10 to 50 yards with my TX200 tuned at 16.5 FPE. It liked only one pellet though, and that was the Crosman Premier 7.9 grains.
-
It sounds like the pellets aren't stabilizing! :P
-
So you guys are saying that a little heavier pellet would likely make the accuracy at different distances more stable? Am I understanding you?
-
It could be an issue with pellet stabilty. The pellets maybe unstable close in (at a higher velocity) and become more stable as the range increases and they slow. I'm curious, what pellet brand/type and weight are you shooting?
Harry Fuller posted some interesting videos on the Yellow showing pellet instability.

ive used 7.9 up to 10.66 H&N with 4 or 5 different kinds of the pellets, pointed and round. Tried a few crosman and and jsb and rws and they all did about the same as far as accuracy.I dont mind the distance as i have that much room and more plus its alot more fun shooting at that distance.Have maybe 500 rounds through it with new seal so maybe it just still needs breaking in.One more thing, this gunshoots like a rocket,i mean she shoots with an attitude and hard.Guns is quiet enough just dont get in the way of the pellet! Very easy to cock and load. The more i shoot her the more i like it.Ill check tip of barrel tomorrow and make sure no dings or scratches to throw off the stability at that the shorter distance.

Nice video.Makes a little more sense now on stability part. Thanks for sharing.
-
you are correct Liz! :P

If 45 yards is where you like to shoot, then the gun will shoot best at that distance.
Most of the time it is ourselves that influence the gun the most.

Was shooting from a gun rest and holding it steady.Did make one mistake as i have 2 rest.one with a butt stop and one with out.wasnt paying attention and shot first one with the butt stop.Dang near ripped my finger off from the double recoil!! lol. Now i made it a different color to know the difference if im not paying attention!.but on the bench rest it shoots well at the 40-40yard mark so im good with that.the vid above was really pretty coll too.just wasnt thinking what a butt stop would make an air rifle do!
-
Do you ever consider the artillery hold for a springer? If you are using a bench to shoot your springer, the front rest MUST be soft and you MUST NOT let the rear of the stock rest into any hard surface. I zero all of my springers and gas pistons using a soft foam rubber pad about 3 inches thick to rest the forearm on and never pull back on the shoulder and use a soft hold on the trigger hand. With this arrangement, I get dime to quarter size groups at 35-40 yards (with no wind) with all my rifles and I am not particularly picky about pellet weight.
-
Yes i have shot it many ways.Gun rest is padded on both ends so no tight hold,it can just rest there..o well i like going out for distance anyway as i have a few good guns that wont miss at 20-30 yards so itll be ok.i really think it just takes that long for the pellet to stabilize after watching the video though.most birds i shoot are at least 30-40yards anyway.but thanks for sharing!

Not sure I follow, Are your groups larger at 20 than 40, or are the groups just shifting?
Sounds like a stability issue but I can't seem to fathom that a gun could group (for example) 1 and 1/2 inches at 25 yds, and then groups shrink to say, 3/4 of an inch....just doesn't seem right.
Are we suggesting that they may be hitting sideways, and then stabilizing? I guess I can see that, but if they were doing something like a corkscrew motion, his GROUPS should be shifting, not opening up.
Stupid question here, Are you using an adjustable objective scope, or open sights?
thanks for more info and God bless,

Farmer raises an extremely relevant question. If the scope's objective is set for a longer distance, then it would change the POI at closer distances due to possible shift in the location of the eye to the eyepiece but appear to be more accurate at great distances. This is why some scopes are advertised with 100 yard parallax setting and some are advertised with 35 yard setting and some scopes have adjustable objectives (AO).
Most of my scopes either have a fixed parallax of 35 yards or I keep the adjustable ones set for 40 yards or less.
Have you tried shooting this rifle with another scope with different parallax?
-
Yes i have.A plain ole 4x32 also and a few other ao scopes.leapers to cp,to rws it just tightens up better at apx 40-45 yards on the target then it does at 20-30yards.Getting new things to look for here too.Wont be able to go out and try again untill Friday but at least i have some new ideas! Thanks all
