Title: Crosman 760 and the backyard
Post by: triggerfest on April 26, 2021, 05:44:48 PM
I have rented a summer house with some small property around it, where I will stay with my wife, my teens and some friends for a good week.

Time for some family fun ! So I am thinking to buy a 760 to attack some soup and beer cans whenever we can.

I have 2 questions, also since I am not familiar at all shooting BB's...

First, is the 760 backyard friendly ?
Secondly, I read it is recommnded to wear safety glasses when shooting BB's - you agree ?

Yes. And, yes.

I'd say yes and yes.

The 760 is a lightweight gun, and you can simply pump it more/less depending on your circumstances. It's a solid 'low-medium' to 'medium' as far as noise goes.

BBs are very likely to ricochet if you aren't using a trap. You'll be amazed at how far, and fast, they'll go in random directions. There's been some recent threads about BBs and broken windows. ;)

Consider an 880 with pellets or remington am

I have many 760 models, They can be backyard friendly with 3 to 5 pumps, but they can also reach out with more pumps.
Eye protection should be worn with BB's and pellets. Also make sure you are allowed to shoot BB guns at the rental.
Stay safe, enjoy!

The 760 will shoot pellets also if you choose.

A rifled barrel and pellets will get you better accuracy. The 760 is smooth bore, not rifled.

Good point about the rifled barrel
Besides that I don't like the looks of the newest 760 classic.

Cheers guys...

I do have a low powered 5fpe-ish Diana Panther 21 .177 call with a nice rifled bore shooting bullseye with RWS pellets at 20 yards all day long...

Though I don't want to get this little gem exposed to "family fun" If you know what I mean. Hence my choice for the 760. Also to keep it even more low powered with maybe shooting on 3-4 pumps. But true, you can shoot with pellets as well. Though low powered, pellets and short distances sometimes still give me ricochets sometimes too. Okay, I'll take eye protection with us.

Very easy to add a TKO to a 760.

Very easy to add a TKO to a 760.
Nice idea if needed.
I don't think the 760 will need a TKO at 4 pumps.
Not to mention the cost added to a 35.00 dollar gun.

Steve, have you used the frangble BB's yet?

I was thinking of picking up a pack or two. I have the .177 round lead balls, and they work pretty well in the BB magazine.

Aw, C'mon,   I've seen (and done) some high priced scopes on some of these 760's and 880's! ;) ;) ;)

I was about to say I don't even own a BB rifle then remembered somewhere in my mess I have a Red Ryder. Never tried them but they come to mind any time someone mentions concerns over ricochets.

Now...where did I stick the Ryder........

Do they work with guns that utilize a magnet ?

I guess it depends on your neighbors.

If 4 pumps equals about the noise level of a 1077, I would be pretty okay I think.

From what I remember from shooting the 1077 once, it was not too loud.

The 1077 is not that loud, and I put a Geo LDC on it!

(Most of my shooting is indoors, at this time).

I never said we don't do silly things sometimes. I know I do! I was just trying to keep him on a budget for a plinker.
I 'm not the one who should say anything about costs come to think of it, I spend way too much on all of my hobbies.

Go on, don't stop there. Tell me more! I have money I need to spend before the wife finds out...

I have lost enough hearing, that I can save money on LDC, but I get it for indoor use.
I do mostly testing indoors, so I have never considered an LDC all of my major shooting happens outdoors.

I have many 760 models, They can be backyard friendly with 3 to 5 pumps, but they can also reach out with more pumps.

+1, but also...

In case you need to make absolutely sure that you dont make much noise, the other option (and i am dead serious) is a red ryder. to target practice and to plink cans is probably a lot easier, only one pump(cocking of the lever), it has decent range (i can knock cans down at 40 yards (not feet, yards...)), it will pierce a can at 10 to 15, is easy to shoot and carries a ton of ammo (literally you can dump 500 bbs in it and call it a week end). this BB gun shoots BBs at about 275 to 280 fps, and is a blast to shoot. in case you need targets, cut some sheet rock into squares (8 by 8 inches) and stick those little 1/2 inch stickers on it... the sheet rock will stop all bbs and you can see where you are hitting. or you can take some cheerios and scatter them on the yard, and then walk around them trying to blow them up at different angles and distances. A red ryder will do easily a 1 inch group at 10 yards, but some better. it can hit a can 10 out of 10 shots at 25 yards, and they plain look super cool... also i think you can get them still for like 24$ and a bottle of 2400 bbs is like 3.50$. I absolutely love the 760, but the pumping can get tedious and noisy. you can even go for the little one called the buck, which it shoots like the red ryder, but is a bit shorter (uncomfortable to a grown up) and it does not have an adjustable rear sight. But they can still hit targets wayyy out there.

I have a few 760's. Shoot them in my backyard all the time. Only time I don't is at night because it's to quiet here. I do shoot my 880 more. Yes, wear glasses. BB's will ricochet off of imbeded BB's from previous shots.

A 760 shooting Daisy wadcutter pellets at 10 yards is perfect. It's one of my back porch guns.

I have always been a big fan of the Crosman 760. I think because in my youth it was the dream gun.
I have PowerMasters, PumpMasters, Revellations, you name it if it was made like a 760 I have it.
I know it's not the best,or the most accurate "BB" gun, but I have always thought they had the best look.
I mean how can you go wrong, 3 pumps indoor range, 10 pumps outdoor range, and everything in between.

That are some very nice heirloom 760's !
