Any of you mod. your gun stock?
-
What kind of mods are you talking about?
-
I've filled and weighted a few synthetic stocks. Thought about doing a few notches here and there for access to pivot bolts on break barrels or the velocity screw on an Mrod. Never made any palm rests or major reshaping. I've seen others that have made storage in synthetic stocks.
Unless you mean checkering, engraving or carving. Those talents are far beyond my skill set.
-
I have a few times.
Made a folding 13xx stock, shortened a 13xx stock, modified a 2260 stock for a 13xx I made into a traditional rifle.
-
I built a LW barreled 2260 based carbine and modded a broken 392P without the pump arm for it.
Does that count?
-
So many mods so little time, to do the detailed ones but have made them useful for the guns purpose ???
-
I used "Stone Texture" paint for mock stippling
-
It seems that posts are made, and questions asked but the orginator does not comment back.
I have seen this many times now with differant originators.
-
So I guess all they want to know is do we do it?
YES

I know it is hard to believe, but not everyone lives on GTA. ;) ;D
-
What?
Maybe I'm just thinking, if I asked a question I would stick around for a little while to see if I get any feedback.
-
It is approaching midnight here... most "sane" people are in bed. ;D
-
Bah, ha,ha,ha
This is the mid day for me this week.
I just wonder why you would post and sing off?
-
I live on EST, not that means anything in my work.
-
I am loaded with "potato juice" and Mnt Dew... so all comments from here forward are off the record.
::)

I am tempted to start a thread, asking "are any of you mind readers?". Anybody who replies is bound to ask why. In what context. Else, it is a stupid question. Which leads me to this:
I think that I should stop putting in so much effort trying to answer what seems like a simple question; but requires a nuanced response. Rather answer with "why do you want to know?". If the OP is not going to guide the discussion, a bunch of people end up wasting their time.
This thread is a case in point: https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=186556.msg156141641#msg156141641 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=186556.msg156141641#msg156141641)
I even PMd the OP there, asking him to participate and he ignored that...

Wood or plastic? If wood, there is a forum dedicated to that: https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?board=139.0 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?board=139.0)
Else, general stock mods may be found here: https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?board=15 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?board=15)
If we new the kind of mods and the airgun of interest, we could find you specific info. That could be spread over the rest of the forum...
-
Yes, it was a rather vague post... but lets see what the OP comes back with.
I have seen some stocks here that were very detailed.

Stone texture paint? Never tried. Spray on bed liner I've done. That was on an adult sized stock for a Daisy Buck rifle I made and forgot about. Surprisingly durable, figured it would have flaked off but lasted years. The thing looked like... Well, let's just say it was comfortable to shoot.
I am curious as to the OP's original question, there are many "mods" that could be done. The only thing I've never seen was a floating stock, as in buoyant when applied to water ;D . But lots if interesting things can be done for cosmetics and function.
-
I'll post some I did if I can find the pictures.
-
Nothing fancy or special, but I've done a few things. Not even close to some of the seriously awesome jobs by some members that Hoosier mentioned above though.
-Customized a Hatsan Striker wood stock by cutting out the cheek riser and raising it. Why it's painted red is another story....lol.
-Customized a Hatsan Edge stock then fried the gas ram tinkering.
-Made my own screw cups for a few synthetic stock rifles to protect screw holes.
-Filled, weighted, or tried sound deadener in synthetic stocks to kill echo.
-Soft bedded (close to a dozen)
-
Can't get files to attach or upload pictures.
-
I guess it did but only 1 at a time.

The fake magazine covers on the 1077 work as a storage compartment for spare mags.
-
^ I found this idea on the web ^
I took it one step further buy making the lower magazine plate slide on and off to store extra mags. inside.
-
duct tape, bondo and pipe insulation are yer friends for stock mods.....
-
duct tape, bondo and pipe insulation someone else told me that a long time ago.
Something about filling a plastic stock with pipe insulation.

PA pellet foam works well. I coat mine in 100% rubberized silicone, then stuff it in there. Messy but works well. Pipe insulation, old shop rags, a ziploc bag filled with rice, plumber's putty or similar. The blue one I posted above got the skeleton part covered with ABS plastic cut to fit, then 2 part Quick Dry poly Epoxy, sanded smooth and painted. Some do camo paint jobs and finish with satin or dull coat clear.
Possibilities are endless for the most part, just depends on what you want for a finished gun stock.
-
Cut a little off the front so barrel mounted scout scope will clear when cocking. Cut a little off the back to improve scope eye relief. Slip over ribber butt recoil pads to improve scope eye relief or cover bare wood or protect expensive wood and recoil pad. Add screw on sling mounts on the side of some old Chinese gun and AK/SKS slings. Spray paint with pick-up bed liner or red spray paint. Sand first. Blue varnish. On old Chinese guns I sand and use Minwax light oak and poly mix. Use steel wool to smooth out the varnish afterwards. Old pellets in the back of plastic stocks to add weight. Combine pellets and packed news paper to get the weight right.

Even without any wood working talent, you can get some things done by just being persistently stubborn.
Patience….if you want to get it all down in one day, will likely screw it up. If it takes several days, or a day here...day there...with a week inbetween….whatever.
Needed to do 4 things to get this simple result:

1. Had to inlet the tank block into the stock (it’s a long tubed HPA conversion).
2. Needed the stock to be longer...too much longer for just adding a recoil pad.
3. Wanted the pistol grip textured.
4. Refinish without staining as it was a pleasant honey color.
NO SKILL...have all the wood working skill of a dull tooth beaver.
1. In-letting the block and getting the screws in place was the hardest….so it took the longest. Hand tools. Spend nearly as much time sharpening as you do peeling little curls of wood.

2. Cheated on the butt pad. Just cut two short lengths of black PVC tubing as spacers and attached a Morgan pad (running the screws though the spacer). Couple of test runs with different length spacers before settling on the “right” spacers.

3. Stippling is mind numbingl...no skill, real simple...dull punch and a lite hammer. Zero skill, just tapping your brains out. Ebony stain.

4. Refinish was easy...no staining, but I had to mask off the stippled area. Thin applications, long dry time between thin coats, and you’re good in a couple of days.

Fine looking guns and some different ideas.

Ported one of my 2 .22 Maximi to 45 fpe... he now is dressed in grandpa's stock ...has 2 barrel bands for now will soon be four(one at Breech and right behind fill assembly)... once I inlet the other stock both will wear grandpa's stock...just can not bond with the Synthetic Maximus stock...
Oh the Crosman 160 stocks have been sanded... most dings steamed as much as could be...then used walnut alcohol base stain...

Very nice classic look, great job!
-
well I can not believe it... did not blow breech loose when sending rounds at 45 ish fpe before I inlet the stock for a band at the breech...just did not have faith in that tiny breech screw... I feel better...now just to experiment with harmonics and band placement's effects...
The BBT 30g .22 (6 shots @ 2% es, 8@at4%) and Seneca domed can run with this .143 transfer port... I may need to choke it a bit for the JSB 25.4g for a better string...

I couldn't resist posting this to your question, do we mod our stocks: sometimes!
Why did I mod this B3 rifle stock? For the fun of it, really, but I thought there might be something to gain by doing it. The mod was to make the grip more vertical and scooping out the wood above and behind the grip made the rifle into a more of a comfortable, "target" shooter. There is a nice, oval-shaped thumb rest behind the action that you can't see that keeps my hold more consistent.
Oh the paint job...that's just me being goofy.
The results? I like using the gun more than I used to, it makes me smile.
Did it improve handling and accuracy? I think it did!
Usually, modifying an air gun like this will seriously devalue it for potential resale, but devaluing a B3? Not an issue!
So if you think your rifle or pistol needs some changes to make you like it better AND you don't mind if the resale value drops, then by all means, have fun and learn along the way!
We only get one go-round, so enjoy!
