I'm thinking of modifying my Lee 456-220-1R mold to a hollow point configuration. This is a used and badly treated mold I got with my .45 gun so not a big loss if things don't work out. My plan is to drill the mold for 7mm pins. Now the question, can I use brass as the pin material or should I go for steel? I see all commercial stuff uses steel so I'm wondering what's the reason for that?

My guess, first toughness, second cost.
If you drop your hollow point pin and bend the tip or put a dent in it casting gets gets more difficult.
