Title: My first Hatsan, model 95 .25 first shots
Post by: glockwhiskey on February 11, 2021, 08:34:40 AM
Finally after a few weeks wait my first Hatsan arrived yesterday. Thanks to GTA for the PA discount code!!

I got the vortex gas piston non QE in .25 caliber. We're in a polar vortex atm here in Ohio but I fired up the propane heater in the garage to put about 30 pellets through it.
I was shooting at 20yds with open sights (which are very good sights in my opinion) at a piece of cardboard with black dots, I really should've used a colored sight in target to use those fiber optic sights to their full potential though.

I did not bother getting the chrony out at this time. I just wanted to shoot the four different pellets through it to see how they perform. I have since mounted the included scope and rings for further testing hopefully this weekend.

The only other gas piston I've shot is my sons Benjamin Titan NP in .22. I was pleasantly surprised with the Hatsan shot report. It's actually pretty quiet and smooth shooting. Not really what I was expecting although it is a pretty stout platform with some heft to it.

Looks good so far, sir. I wish they'd made the stocks as pretty looking as yours back 5 years ago when I got mine. They've gotten better at not piling on whatever finish they use and actually let the wood grain show and the dark and dull finish on mine ended up drove myself and others to refinish them...lol.

Keep us posted as the shooting progresses and keep an eye on that included scope. They used to include a 3-9x32 AO scope that had a quite bad reputation for failing in the first 300-500 shots and the one I did try on a rifle with less power than the .25 failed at a touch over 400 shots. Been a few years since I bought a new Hatsan, that one was the new AirTact in .25 when they first came out and I never used the included scope, so I'm curious how well the scope they include these days may hold up.

Here's mine with that grungy finish I mentioned before and after I tinkered.

Thanks Steve.
Funny you mention the improved finish on the stocks. Yes it looks great, if not awesome in person, pics don't do it justice. But after the first couple of shots I noticed the top coat had scratched or flaked off right above the pistol grip portion of the buttstock. I ran patches soaked in Hopes #9 through the bore until they came out clean before shooting it and I thought maybe some of the Hopes dripped on the stock. Nope, I realized the coat I had on had snaps at the cuffs and every time I cocked the rifle the snap rubbed the stock thus scratching the clear coat in a couple of spots.  :o    Oh well, I bought this to shoot/hunt with so no biggie to me but the top coat is kind of thin.

I didn't pay attention to the brand on the scope but have read where they don't last long. I don't think it feels like this recoils bad at all so we will see how it holds up. My plan is to further test these four pellets to see how accurate I can get them and then buy more. PA is very limited in .25 pellets and wanting to keep with domes I got what was available. Hopefully If not before I'll get a better report on accuracy and some chrony numbers on these pellets this weekend.

That looks real nice.

My two Hatsan 125s both came with the Optima 3-9x32.  One survived the 125 ok, but when I upgraded the scope, I put the Optima on my RWS 3500 22cal, and it didn't last 100 shots.  I put the second Optima on the same RWS, and it has survived about 100 shots, but I don't expect too long of a life.

The SAS system on the Hatsan probably takes some of the sting out of the shock to the scope.

I've read mixed stories on the scope so we will see. I don't mind upgrading, I actually prefer mil dot reticles anyways but it came with the rifle so I'll see how it does. It is actually smoother shooting than my other spring guns in .177 and .22.

Might well just be me but I admit to wondering just how well the SAS actually works. That white sleeve the front stock bolt goes through is their "shock absorber" and it's actually hard plastic, maybe something like Delrin? I'm sure someone will chime in but how well can something that hard actually absorb shock??

I keep thinking it but have yet to try the idea and that idea is replacing that hard plastic insert with some type of heavy rubber tubing cut to fit that might actually absorb some of the shock. I suppose after a few years thining about it, I should get around to trying it one of these days...lol.

Shot the rifle last night with the included scope. Yep, it's going to get replaced when funds allow. It's ok but doesn't fully focus to my eyes and there is no adjustment in the eyepiece to remedy that. I was able to pull off some decent groups even with that little downfall.

I shot 5 shots of each pellet at 15yds and changed up my hold on the rifle. It was more stable at the shot holding the foregrip tight and resting my hand on the sandbag. Again these groups prove it doesn't like the lighter or heavier pellets. It really likes both 25.4gr pellets. I have a tin of JSB match diablo exacts in 25.39gr coming so I have high hopes for those.

Nice shooting even with the scope limiting things. I've never shot anything lead free out of mine yet, although I got some Predator GTO's on a whim along with the new FX versions and at some point will put them to the test. Gonna be awhile though since the nasty weather you're getting is likely what's headed my way this weekend...lol.

I have 5 Hatty's in .25 (also have 2 Hatty PCP's in the caliber) and mine have all done real well with the JSB's, so hopefully they will in yours too. I've tried others and a few of them shoot pretty well out to the 30 yards I have for shooting but I always go back to the JSB's.

I just tried the lead free because it's the only pellet PA had in the lighter weight. I wanted to test light and heavy pellets but it looks like this rifle likes the mid weights. I know I can tighten the groups up with a better scope and I forgot to mention I haven't touched the trigger yet, it's still factory set. A little stiff but smooth once you learn how it operates. For intended purposes of this setup 30 yards is going to be my zero once pellet selection is decided on.

I'm hoping to shoot some more this weekend and get the chrony out, weather permitting. We have more coming this way, think they said 4 cells of snow on the way in the next 7 days.  :o

Nice, looks like it's going to be a great shooter.

You can adjust the diopter to clear up the reticle focus (I had to do it myself).  There isn't a 'fast focus' that most scopes have today though.

You just need to loosen that lock ring just in front of the ocular bell (I just use my hand and twist the ocular bell counterclockwise to loosen it, it's not all that tight).

Then adjust the ocular bell forward or back to achieve focus.

Then snug down that lock ring again ( I just run the lock ring up against the ocular bell, and then twist the ocular about 1/4 turn or so to snug it back up).

That's the problem Shane, I tried that. I actually used curved jaw channel locks on that "lock ring" and it didn't budge. I've never seen one that tight?

Someone on the Optima scope assembly line must be mixing steroids and Red Bull......smile

Right?! LOL
I'll give it a go again tonight, I know it should be adjustable and it has the lock ring but I'm telling you it won't move.  :o
