I recently got my mitts on a new moderator that is under development, and wanted to share my impressions.
Coming in at 7.36" and 4 ounces on the nose, we have the AUO moderator. Solid aluminum tube, two knurled, very nicely anodized endcaps make for a robust, simple, and easily serviceable design. I cannot discuss the specifics of it's internals due to rules here, but was glad to see it utilized my favorite design. I am also told there will be an alternate version of the guts that will be available so they can be swapped.
In use I find it's function to be among the best. Sound reduction is quite impressive. I tested it out on my 24 fpe .177 Nova Star today, and my 50fpe .22 FX Crown. The .177 was essentially silent. The .22 is not easy to muffle at that power level (500mm barrel), but it did an excellent job of hushing it.
I think this mod is a winner in several departments. -Simplicity -Effectiveness -Robustness -Lightness I think that's all I could ask for, honestly. 8)

Nice write up, and that's some pretty exotic looking guns you got there Dallas!
Which model Hatsan is that?

Moved to the Airgun Accessory Review Gate.

I have one also, I tried it on a lot of my air rifles and it's found a home on my DAR .22. It did a good job at muffling the bark on all of them, although it does have a bit of a tinny pitch to it compared the ones that use some sort of fabric based muffling system. What impressed me the most on the DAR is the fact it actually tightened the groups! The other thing that was a pleasant surprise was the fit, the semi-cone end cap that screws to the adapter is an almost perfect match to the OD of the DAR Shroud, it looks like it was made for this rifle... So, it's found its new home!

Thanks 🙂 it's a hatsan nova star. They changed the name to neutron star currently due to some confusion with their shotgun lineup.
Both guns pictured have meticulously hand polished oil finishes. The picture doesn't do either justice. The hatsan was a major fixer upper NIB but has turned out nice 🙂

Looks like a perfect match! Even the finish seems to match 😎
I was expecting a higher pitch when I looked it over, due to no sound dampening material. So, I was pretty shocked and pleased to find it extremely effective. I don't think it needs to be any quieter. It already performs right along with the best of the best.
I'd like to test for group sizes at some point, but the results are likely due to harmonics. Glad it worked out so well for you. I think I will be using it on my 14.5" 1322 🙂

Thanks guys, different strokes for different airguns I figure. During prior testing there were some units softer on certain guns yet louder on others. But all units did make a dramatic difference when compared to bare barrel readings.
Paul, so that means the DAR shroud is around the same diameter as the Akela, the AUO taper also matched like it like they were made for each other.

It certainly does make for a very finished appearance! I really appreciate the attention to details on this one. I still have to wonder if the diameter of the inner baffles were reduced just slightly and wrapped with felt, how much of a difference it would make in the tone of the report. I'm betting it would drop the pitch a couple octaves... I like a deeper more authoritative pffft! ;D

I cannot fully reveal what is coming in the new core (you will get one to drop in your chassis, it was designed that way so it can be continually updated by simply changing out the cores) but you will then see the design in person, and there will indeed be some type of sound dampening involved...that's all I can say. 8)

Typically I will throw some felt in the end of the mod right by the exit. Definitely takes the edge off, but this one really has almost no edge.
I do like the idea of different cores. I will be printing some of my own as well 🙂

I also received one from Charlie to test and mounted it on my PRod...works extremely well at quieting it down to mostly mechanical sounds and keeps the POI very consistent....great moderators!

I like how the A.U.O. has a tapered end toward the barrel, instead of the typical steep step.
It makes the whole unit grow more organically out of the gun.
Nice! 😊

That's good to know! I'm looking forward to trying the new core once it's available. This little LDC could become quite versatile!
