Title: Open Field shooting spots near Orange County, CA?
Post by: OCtodd on February 05, 2021, 11:47:55 PM
Looking for shooting spots to drive to from Orange County, CA to do some open field shooting with our air guns.  Recently got back into airguns (pcp even) but I actually regret it now- nowhere for me and the teen kids to field shoot in Orange County. I used to shoot for hours every day in the side yard of my parent's suburban OC home when I was their age, but things have changed in OC since then.  I bought bouncy ground targets, resetting metal targets, clay discs, and once even cases of full soda.  Those umarex big blast pop tops might be next.

Found place out by Calico (Barstow) but the recent snow brings the yahoos out and makes the 2 hour drive a 3.5 hour drive (one way) on a Sunday. My exfiance's (its complicated) teenagers (son and daughter) have come with me to calico the last couple times, but spending 6-7 hours on the road is frustrating and ruins the day for them.  Even 4 hours on the road is tough hurdle just to go plinking. Daughter doesn't want to go anymore it's too far and takes the whole day.

Can you guys recommend somewhere else to shoot air guns near Orange County?  The kids don't want to shoot at a range with loud firearms.

Oh, man. I feel your pain. And I have no answer for you. Well, no good answer. Sorry. I go to great lengths to shoot covertly in my backyard. A lot of sneaking around that wouldnt be setting a great example for teemagers. The ultimate reason Ii got into this was for pesting, though.

I also live in OC and there is no place close by that I know of. I know some folks go out to Chino to the dairy's to help the farmers out, I haven't done that yet but hope to someday. If you go this route, get a written permission to do so signed and carried on your body with you. There could be places in Riverside but don't know for sure. Like Todd said there are Fed lands out toward Palmdale Lancaster areas. A close friend lives in Bear Valley that has a private range, who is also an airgunner but because of the pandemic it's a no go. If anyone finds a place post it here and maybe we can all meet, greet, eat and shoot together! Stay safe and healthy!

Hey, we could have a group pesting outing.  When things get better, of course. I've never done that before either.  And I'm zero'd for about 15 yards....

I wish.  This is going to sound really lame, but I'm too far away for the amount of time I'd be able to commit to shooting there.

Peter, I've been up there to hike but have no idea where the areas are to shoot....guess we'll have to ask Fish and Game or other! Beautiful up there...houses set into the hillsides lots of hills.

I read on a forum somewhere that CNF is a no-go.
Currently BLM land out by calico is the closest I know of. There is BLM land out past palomar, by anza borrego that might bypass the mountain snow crowd, but I haven't verified yet.
