I strapped on my snowshoes and went out hunting this morning at 6 am.
I was carrying the 25 cal. Hatsan 125 rifle and had high hopes for a successful hunt.
I got skunked. ::)
It was a windless overcast morning, the temp was around +17 F
For some reason it was very foggy this morning and I was hunting by creek bottom which made the fog worse.
I stayed out about 3 hours and then packed it in.
All I saw was Fog, Trees and Snow. :-\
All in all ....it was still a great day to be in the winter woods and I had a good time. ;D
I'll try to get out tomorrow or the day after....... before the COLD weather sets in.

All them critters were all holed up at home,... like you should have been! ;)
Hat's off to you for getting out there! Too cold for me even dressed in my best winter gear.
-
At least you got out of the house for a minute. The wind has not let up in the last 2 days around here and the temperatures have been crazy, one day we are in the 80's, the next day we are in the upper 40's. It has fouled up the wildlife to no end. The pictures are pretty. Good luck tomorrow.

Hi Chris.
Thank you for your reply.
Maybe your right !
I could have stayed home this morning and done just as good, but I truly enjoyed the walk in the woods.
I just thought I might get out and do some hunting while it is still relatively "warm".
Thursday night, the temperature is supposed to start dropping.
By Sunday it is supposed to be -3 F for a high and then get colder still.

Tom,
Good job on getting out before it gets cold, it's better to just go hunting and get skunked vers wishing you went hunting and regretting not getting out at all IMO. I like calling it armed hiking vers skunked, saying skunked to me just makes me think I got sprayed. You're a real trooper getting outside in the snow, fog & +17F temps for a hunting trip into the woods.
I am glad you still had a good time out in mother nature. Nice photos too.

Well... Hi there Kris !
I am sorry to here that is what's going on in sunny Florida.
We are going to get the exact opposite of what you are experiencing ...for a while.
So far... we have had a really Mild Winter... but that is about to change.
Hopefully this cold snap that is coming, doesn't last too long.

Oh well, better luck next time Tom. At least you got your daily dose of Vitamin D :D

I enjoy my woods walk around the property. Sometimes I see game to take sometimes I don't. I always enjoy my time outdoors.

Hi Wayne !
The last day of February is my last day.
I haven't done much hunting at all this year.
The wife & I contracted covid around November 5th and that pretty much was IT for me up until today.
I spent Sunday afternoon and Monday morning sighting in the 25 cal. Hatsan 125 with 19.91 Vortex Supreme's in preparation for my final month of hunting.
I posted the results with the 25 cal. 125 Hatsan in the Turkish Air Gun Gate. > https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=183400.msg156091940#msg156091940 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=183400.msg156091940#msg156091940)
I hope you can get out too !

Tom, if only you had asked me, I would have told you to sleep-in. In my experience hunting squirrels, the foggy mornings are not good. For whatever reason, the squirrels don't like the fog and don't move. But sometimes I go anyway.
I bet it felt good to get out and move around.
Stay well, my friend.
-
Glad you are back Tom. Loved the pictures! Dang that looks like fun! I got out yesterday for a couple of hours. Temps in the 40s, gusty winds and an overcast like lead. I saw no squirrels or wild mushrooms but it was a great walk. I was all bundled up in my winter duds when a hiker passed me barefoot and in shorts. ???
-
Critters or not, to be outside in the woods is priceless by itself! Glad you got to go. Haven’t had enough snow here at one time for the snowshoes. My treat from the workday is to take a walk around the farm. Get home at 5:00 and walk, sit or hunt till dark. Good to be able to walk out the back door. You need to do it as often as you can.
-
Sorry to hear that Tom, but at least you enjoyed being out.
Like Mike said, the nutters don't come out when it's foggy. It could be because of limited visibility for birds of prey or any predators in general. Try again when it's clear and sunny and you will see them hopping around. They also like the warmth of the sun rays in the winter and often hang out sunbathing. I had a big maple tree with a hole on 1 side that was the winter den of many squirrels, before a nor'easter knocked it down 6 or 7 years ago. I used to see the Grey's come out when it was sunny out even in the coldest days. They would hang out 10 to 15 feet from the den sunbathing on a big branch. The sun is behind me in the morning, so they always faced me, namely the back of the house to expose themselves to the sun making it easier for me to spot them. I shot many of them on sunny days while they were trying to get a sun tan, usually between 8 and 10am after they had breakfast or their morning exercise.
The woods don't let in much sun though, which explains why you might see them at the tree tops where they are farther and harder to shoot, or get a clear shooting lane. Anyway better luck next time.
-
Glad you got to get out there Tom, especially after being housebound for a while. Just being out in the woods is always nice.

Hi Mike.
I did not know it was foggy until I went outside that morning.
By that time I had 2 hours invested in getting ready for the hunt so I went anyway.
I had 2 days of relatively mild temperatures and I wanted to take advantage of at least one of them before the COLD temps set in.

I am happy that you liked the pictures.
I was indeed fun.
It is great that you got out for a couple of hours too.
I won't see +40 F. for quite some time to come.

Hi Darrell.
We don't have near as much snow as some past years have been.
About 10 to 12 inches is all. In the drifted areas there can be as much as 2 feet though.
My snowshoes have built in cleats that help with the icy crusted terrain.
I also have regular snow cleats for my boots if I need them.
My plan is to get out hunting a few more times this month. My season ends the last day of February.
I am recovering from contracting covid last November and I have not felt up to it until recently.
Thank you for you reply.

Hi Harry.
Like I told Mike, I already had 2 hours invested in checking out my winter hunting gear before I realized it was foggy out, so I went anyway.
I was trying to take advantage of a 2 day window of reasonably mild temps before a cold snap sets in.
Tomorrow I will be getting a little snow then the temperature will begin to descend into the sub-zero range.
I will try and get out tomorrow if I can manage it. (I have lots of "Honey Do" stuff to do also)
Thank you for your reply.

Hi Randall.
Winter safety is one of my main concerns.
That is why I pay so much attention to my winter field gear.
An equipment failure can pose serious problems.
If & when that happens... then... improvising becomes necessary.
I also am prepared to spend the night in the woods if I have to.

Hi Randall.
Winter preparation is essential ....that is... if one plans on making it back home.
The old saying that...the devil is in the details is quite true.
I've had a few mishaps while out in the woods in winter...but nothing that I could not overcome.
The WIND speed can be a big concern. A strong Wind can do a person in real quick if one is not prepared for it.
My son Jason has some Real Interesting Stories to tell about his 20 odd years that he spent guiding big game hunts in Alaska.
I have told him, more than once, that he should write another book and tell the "back stories" about those experiences.
I am talking about things that he did not publish in his first book, Kodak Kings.
He has sold the guiding business that he had and he is not guiding anymore.
It is hard for me to realize that he turned 50 years old last October.
He was just getting too old for some of the real "Hard Core" things that he was doing.
I can understand though. I gave up mountain & ice climbing at age 50 myself.
My little jaunts out into the woods are pretty mild in comparison.
I have a photo album full of pictures about all the Canadian wilderness canoe trips that I took Jason & his two brothers (Matthew & Brian) on when they were growing up. I started out with the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area in the US, then worked progressively North, year by year, from there.
Thank you for your reply Randall.

Hi Tommy Boy,
Great pictures and I felt like I was actually there in the cold fog. Congratulations on your decision and determination to drop the computer mouse and get outside when most would not have.
Not scoring, on critters, happens even on a bluebird day, no biggee! I see it as 'taking my gun for a walk' and I get some exercise too. Win win deal.

Hi Johnny
I am glad that you liked the pictures.
I was planning on getting out again this morning but the forecasted snowfall for today came a few hours early.
It is snowing out right now but the temps are still relatively mild with an outside temp of 28 F.
Around 10 am the temps are forecasted to begin falling to around zero degrees F. and the wind is supposed to pickup to around 30 mph.
At that point, near Blizzard conditions will prevail out in the woods today.
We are supposed to get somewhere around 3 - 5 inches of snow. Not much snow, but the conditions will get brutal with well below zero wind chills and there will be considerable drifting with all that wind.
So..I won't be venturing out... Today.
I have plenty to do around the house.
I took down all out outside Christmas lights & decorations yesterday and that all needs to be packed up and put away.
My wife and I also need to pack up all the inside Christmas stuff and put that away too.
I don't think I will be going hunting again until this cold snap passes. ( If it warms up to zero, is sunny and there is no wind, I might go out again)
Thank you for your reply.

Good Morning Tom,
The weather day for your area is going downhill FAST. It does look more like an indoor day, for sure. I have problems with foggy eyeglasses and scopes in those conditions. Guns don't much like 0 deg !!!

Geeze Tom. That's a winter wonderland or disaster depending on how you look at it. To me it looks like great day to spin circles in my car, NOT on the freeway!!!
The 0 deg F is a wee bit chilly but with the right clothing it's all doable. Here it rains a little bit (insert sarcasm) so we just wear old fashioned RUBBER rain gear when salmon fishing and it's no place for GoreTex and other groovy fabrics.

Hi Johnny
We could be seeing -25 F before the cold snap is over with.
The coldest I have experienced was -46 F on February 1st 1996.
It hit -62 F that day in the areas north of Duluth.
I have the field gear to deal with extreme winter conditions, up to and including a pair of Will Steger Mukluks and a -50 F rated down coat.

Nice ice cleats there Tom. Wish I was there to see it all. Rain here.
Hi Johnny.
I have heard that it rains a lot in Oregon, leastwise on the west side of the Cascade Range.
I won't be seeing any rain until spring. Usually in April but sometimes early May.
In 2018 we had a big February Blizzard with lots of snow then A Big snow storm on March 9th then... another Blizzard that hit April 14th thru April 18th.
There was Massive snow in 2018.
In 2018 the lakes around here were still iced over until May 10th.
After May 10th it got warm real fast. No real spring that year just Winter and then Summer.
I have 5 pairs of completely different type of cleats that I use for different situations.
I was up on my roof today and when I go up there I use Yaktraks Diamond Grip cleats.
The Apex ice cleats in the picture. I use in hunting situations.
I have tungsten carbide spikes for glare ice situations.
I have a 2 pair of Celsius cleats, one old and worn down and one brand new, that I use for when I am out blowing & shoveling snow.
It is kinda like having different air guns for different shooting applications.
Best Wishes - Tom

Hi Buddy.
Hopefully your rain will clear soon.
I was just looking at the national weather service's map of the US.
The rain /snow line seems to run midway thru Kansas & Missouri.
It stopped snowing here yesterday afternoon and the temperature has now dropped to +5 F.
We have a NW wind blowing at 18 -22 mph. The wind chill is at -16 F.
I went out and removed any ice on my driveway yesterday evening while the temps were still in the teens.
At my place this weekend, all the highs will be ....below zero.
I was really glad to get out myself and I had a good time.
Once this cold snap bottoms out, I plan on getting out again.
Thank you for your reply.

Tom, your son Jason should definitely write a book about the close calls he had in a new book! I have Jason's book and the photos and commentary are incredible! I met a guy who was on vacation with his daughter and son in law in Alaska and they were on a small plane excursion and it crashed in a river and they all survived...they had to rescue the pilot but they all made it! They were told only 1% survive small plane crashes up there.

Jan-Feb. 1996 I think was the worst winter for us here too. Besides the extreme low temps, it snowed every 3 days for a couple of months with a few storms that dumped 1-1.5' ft. of snow. I remember there was 4' to 5' of snow all around the house for weeks and felt like we were trapped and buried in it. I remember it vividly because we had closed on the house on Nov. 1, 1995 and I was totally unprepared with only 1 shovel (for an 80ft double-wide driveway) in my possession.

Hi Harry.
The -46F. of Feb 1st 1996 was the most extreme temperature that I have experienced in any one day.
The October 31st Halloween Blizzard of 1991 was the most snowfall that I have experienced, in any one single storm.
During the three days of that storm I got 34 inches of snow... in one big shot.
Here is the excerpt from Wikipedia on the Haloween Blizzard/Perfect Storm of 1991.
The heavy snow began falling across east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin during the late afternoon hours of October 31. By midnight, the Twin Cities had already recorded 8.2 in (20.8 cm) of snow. This not only set a record for the largest amount of snow on that date, but also for the most snow ever recorded in the Twin Cities during the month of October. As the storm system pushed its way northward, more communities in eastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin began to experience similar conditions; and thundersnow occurred as far north as Duluth.
Snowfall totals for the Halloween Blizzard
Over the next two days the snow continued to fall, leading to additional snowfall of one to two feet (30 cm to 60 cm). By the time the snow ended on November 3 the storm had dropped 36.9 in (93.7 cm) on Duluth, the largest single snow storm total in Minnesota history at that time. The Twin Cities received 28.4 in (72.1 cm), setting a single-storm record for the metropolitan area. In all, at least one foot (30 cm) of snow fell in a swath approximately 100 mi (160 km) wide from south central Minnesota, northeastward into northwestern Wisconsin and into the Minnesota Arrowhead. A more narrow band of 2+ ft (60+ cm) of snow fell from the Twin Cities to Duluth and northward.
Guys were scrambling to get snowshoes for deer hunting that year. (The 1st weekend in November)
As for me, I already had 3 pair plus Cross Country Skis.
Some of guys that I knew at that time, were trying desperately to make a pair, because all the stores were sold out.
