Title: Airgun show Booty
Post by: althawk on September 17, 2011, 07:25:35 PM
Well I had been looking for just one of the following:
Sheridan Silver Streak
Crosman Mk I/II
Crosman 1389/2289
Daisy 953

Wallets a little lighter, because I got the following:

$60 - Crosman Mk II  - Could use a re-paint.  Power adjustable version. Think it is a pre-'75 model. VERY HAPPY that I got it.
                               http://my.tbaytel.net/coopers/CrosMkI/review.html (http://my.tbaytel.net/coopers/CrosMkI/review.html)
rated at 420 fps on 7.9gr (3 fpe).

$65 - Daisy 850 - seems like a 953, but its bb/pellet. Single-pump pneumatic circa 1982-84.
Similiar to this, but w/o the box: http://liveinternetauctions.mobi/asp/showImageFullSize.asp?url=/AuctionImages/3507/36549/322.jpg (http://liveinternetauctions.mobi/asp/showImageFullSize.asp?url=/AuctionImages/3507/36549/322.jpg)

                       http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/message/1168730520/New+basement+shooter (http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/message/1168730520/New+basement+shooter)

Might not be much of a deal, but it was cheaper then a new 953.  According to an 1982 Popular Mechanics ad, its rated at 480 fps .177 cal. (about 4 fpe) with a 1982 msrp of $65 (using time-value of money i paid less then msrp, it'd be about $170 in 2011 dollars).

$20 - Crosman 2100 -possibly old stock. judging by its card board box, seems to have collected dust, hope its a shooter. If not, it was only $20.

There were about 4-5 Sheridans blue streaks. two of which where priced reasonably at $153 thumb-safety w/ reseal and $149 w/ williams peep sight.  I was very tempted, but I'd told myself before hand SILVER STREAK!
Pair of Mark I & II's  w/ accessories $138 and $150.
Couple metal receiver Daisy 880's.
Also a Daisy 922 (the precursor to the Daisy 22sg) for $50, but ... wait why didn't i get that? AHHHH *face palm*.

Wow- sounds like you picked up some goods! Great finds. :)
I don't think I've heard of any airgun shows in this area- too bad- I'd love to go to one.
I'd love to find an older model 2100.

I almost bought that one thumb safety blue streak, but then I wandered back to some other booth to see if i'd missed any air guns and saw the mk II. Asked for the price... asked again cause I thought I'd misheard, fumbled for my wallet and voila...
Probably should have negotiated on the daisy 850, but i think it was worth it.

I'm the world's worst about negotiating. I don't have it in myself to dicker on prices, lol. I just have to decide when I see the price if it's worth it to me, regardless of market value, because I know I'm not gonna try to get the seller to come down. :D Funny thing is, with most of the pawn shop finds that I've bought, the seller offered to give me a better price without my asking. ;D

Ok well I cleaned up the 2100. There was a ton of particulate matter, i.e. dust & grime.
I believe its a 1981 model.
Says "A Coleman Company
        Fairport N.Y.  U.S.A.
        Model 2100"
on the receiver.

and says "Coleman" on the butt stock.
Looks almost New, adding some pellgunoil, seems bone-dry.

Ooooh- can't wait to hear how it shoots. If you ever sell, I get first dibs. :D

Daisy 850 Pics:

Theres a few spots where its lost paint, probably the biggest spot is on the front sight, a spot on the left & right sides of the receiver, all of which you can see in the photos below.

Crosman Mk II (believe its pre-1975) pics:

Anyone have some suggestions for re-storing? Specifically re-painting.
I'm thinking a black to match the grips. Or maybe something with a metallic sheen.

Also, when crosman discontinued these pistols... they made a huge mistake, in my opinion.
Anyone know of any good reasons for them to have?

Well color me confused...
The $20 coleman crosman 2100 pumps up, but i can't hear the tell-tale intake of air at all.
Yet it shot out a pellet at 3x pumps.

Its clearly not new in box (NIB). I would guess it was handled a few times, re-boxed, and forgotten about. There is some slight scuffing on the receiver, one tiny nick on the barrel housing near the front sight. Plus the sticker telling you where to oil is a bit faded/smudged.

Tried out the Daisy 850.
Seems pretty accurate, especially without a scope, but I need to adjust the sights cause its shooting about 2 inches high. 1st five shots fit under a quarter with .177 cphp's without much effort. Its definitely quieter than i would have thought. Really wanna try a scope on it at 15m, 20m, and 25m. Also i'm worried i'll mess up the rear sight, it looks kinda fragile/brittle.
That and it looks like I'll have to get used to the way it pumps. Swing up, swing down. That swing down is kinda awkward at first.

Daisy accuracy:
1st photo: is target after a clean, 1st 5x shots from the rifle, open sights. (forgot to adjust photo 90 degrees to right)
2nd photo: is me trying to sight in the scope. Top part was testing scope out. center shot was dead on, subsequent shots to far left or to far right.
3rd photo: scoped.  Was aiming for deadcenter, so i think i need a lil bit more scope adjustment, since its a bit low and to right.
Target traced from a CD,inner circle traced from a cap of shaving creme. so that bullseye is penny-sized.
               11-13 shots.

Size comparison using:
Penny & Quarter
2x Quarters

Definitely need a better scope. (this was an el-cheapo $7 crosman 4x15 superscope)

Old Crosman 2100 "accuracy"

Let it sit over night after oiling it.
Took 10 shots, at 15ft.  Seemed on Par with Daisy 850's initial 5x shots.
Moved out to 30 ft. First shot was way off... Next 5 shots were still off target, rifle developed a noticeable squeak.
Re-oiled the pivot points, and felt in the pump tube.
Next couple of shots were a lil higher then i wanted them, but in line.
So should I scope or mess with the elevation?

For now I'm just gonna give it another night of the oil treatment.
I'm still not hearing the tell-tale intake of air... yet its shooting... ???

Well... good news is that after a minor take-down (to oil it) and to apply lithium grease to the CO2 cap's threads, and the use of my very last CO2 cartridge; the Crosman Mk II works!!! No re-sealing necessary! :)
There was at first a lil leakeage somewhere, but it sealed up.

Bad news is around 65-70 shots into it just when the CO2 was starting to die... the magnetic portion of the bolt, came loose!!! Found it... now I'm not sure what to do about it... :(

Have a target with all three airguns represented at same distance. Soon as I can find my camera I'll post it.

Mk II is a ragged blob of shots, approx. 35 shots.
Crosman 2100 is, except for one flyer, about the size of a quarter.
Daisy 850 is, also about the size of a quarter. (look more concentrated then crosman though)

Inspecting the pellet trap though, I could see the daisy's pellets all smashed into each other (looked like a pellet rose). Whereas the 2100's pellets were touching.

Crosman Mk II

Just repainted.
Using Krylon Fusion based Camo Ultra Flat Black 11 oz. spray can.
$5, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00176TH8C (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00176TH8C)

Barrel housing came out wonderfully.  2x Coats, can't even tell there is still old battleship grey paint underneath.
Trigger guard, looked nice, had some over-spray :(, thinned it out some, had to re-spray.
Pistol frame, almost perfect with 2x coats. Light spray afterwards on some spots that got missed.

Will try to post photos tomorrow when it has dried for 24 hours.
Overall the key with this spray was quick & light sprays.

Nice!. I love the 850, thats a cool gun. I still like daisy guns, even the new ones. I love my 880. I'd like to get a 22sg one of these days as well.

I'd used the Krylon fusion:plastic red & black (works on metals, wood, ceramic too) to restore a pair of old mailboxes so I figured I'd see if Krylon had any fusion colors that might work for this.  Mailboxes have held up ok so far, exposed to the elements & daily use.

They had some hammered ones (bronze) that looked neat.
After a little research, went for the Camouflage (w/ fusion) black, ultra flat that they had at walmart for $5.

It still amazes me how well it worked on the barrel housing.  I thought I'd have to use some fancy enamel or special primer.

When working with this paint, make sure you remove as much excess debris and oil (i.e finger prints) with something (like rubbing alcohol, paint thinner, goo gone...etc.). This paint dries fairly fast, under 15 minutes;  if you don't wear gloves (nitrile/latex) any where you touch potentially could bubble in that 15 minute window (and you'd then have to use paint thinner and re-spray).
2x light coats (don't spend more than 3 sec in one spot) should be enough most of the time.

The only times I have had fusion paint 'flake/bubble' are when i either didn't clean around a spot on the mailboxes (where it ended up bubbling, and subsequently flaked there after a rain storm), or i touched the spot with my bare hands after cleaning, but before spraying (on the mkII).
So let me reiterate, keep the surface as clean and sterile as you can.

Also i don't know if this is true or another internet rumor, but apparently OFF misquito repellent can cause this paint to 'melt.'
