Title: What is this thing called?
Post by: Mossonarock on January 11, 2021, 07:38:00 PM
I'm not sure if there is a better place to post this question. You can see the pic. Its a ball bearing and a spring encased together. I bought this part from TW Chambers because its the only part like it that I could find on the internet. TWChambers sells it as an indexer for a front sight; for what gun I can't remember and it doesn't matter. However, I hope there's a mechanical engineering industry standard name for the doohicky. That's what I need help with; determining what this thing is called. Surely, this device is made for other mechanical engineering applications outside of airguns.

I want to try an experiment with my D56 since it rocks laterally. The holes in one of the brackets for one of the rails was drilled to big. There's nothing I can do to change that. I had talked with Hector about it and he said he might be able to make a larger rail to fit the hole then drill out the slide to fit the larger rail. I want to try my experiment first since it won't require permanent alterations to any metal parts on the gun.

To do so, I need one of these doohicky things with a larger ball bearing and much stronger spring. I bought this thingy from TWChambers merely because its the only thing like it I've found after months of searching on the internet. Having an industry standard name would help me to possibly find other offerings.

I have no idea how to measure the force I need for the spring to apply against the ballbearing. I have no idea what units to measure that force in. Nor do I have any idea if the force of that spring would be included in the product description.

If all else fails, I might have to get a series of these indexers from TWChambers since the spring force from just one is way too weak but I'm afraid these might be too short to both span the gap they need to and stay put in the hole I will drill into the stock for them.

If anyone thinks they can make one of these doohickies, I'd be happy to talk specs and quote with you. I can at least measure maximum length and width. I might be able to find a way to measure approximate minimum force required but it will be sketchy.

Could this be what you are talking about, see info here, (hard to see in you photo),> Called a Ball plunger),

If so these item come in numerous sizes and spring weights, you just have to know what the thread size is and the length needed and poundage needed etc.

Here is a page with all the info, you can check out............
