Title: Narrowed down my choices, but would like some feedback...
Post by: bigjoda on September 15, 2011, 10:32:22 PM
Brand new to this forum.  I haven't owned an air gun since my 760 disappeared 30 years ago and I'm going to buy one soon.  I've done some research and have narrowed down my choices to the following:

Gamo Silent Stalker
RWS Model 34
Benjamin Trail NP Nitro

I have $300 to spend, not including upgrades.  I am primarily looking for accuracy and durability.  I won't be varmint hunting - just punching paper.  I really would prefer to have some good iron sights and then add a scope later.  I have concerns about stock triggers and stock scopes and would ultimately like to upgrade both.  From what I've read, .177 offers slightly better accuracy but I don't know enough to verify this.
I would love to get some feedback, especially from anyone who owns one or more of these models.

Great Forum!

Thanks.

The 34 is a good option in my opinion, the t05 trigger is good out of the box and with the addition of a first stage screw it is great.

I am not familiar with the t06 but have heard good reviews.

The other guns need upgrades to be in the same class as the 34.
The trigger sold by charlie da tuna is exceptional though, but still an upgrade.. but what an upgrade.

Thanks, that's why I've been leaning towards the Model 34.  I just don't get why so many air guns are manufactured with such crappy triggers...?

If you want iron sights, that leaves out the Benji

The RWS Diana T05 trigger out of the box beats the NP even after a upgrade is installed.

The new RWS Diana T06 is even better, skip the close out T05 triggers and get the T06 and it will also have some open sights

I would go for the new RWS 34 with the t06 trigger. I would also probably get it in 22 for both plinking paper and pests. Not that I don't absolutely enjoy my t05 177 34 MPC, but that the new t06 trigger is adjustable to you without 'outside' assistance and the 22 will keep it just a tad calmer and utilize the same power source more efficiently. Enjoy and welcome.....Den

i have the trail. I had a titan. Both are good chooses if you get a good one. I just got the Rws 350 in the 177. I was looking for a 25 and ran into a deal on the RWS .177. I as well have the walther falcon in a 22. Falcon was to hot for my area of shooting and is a beast.  The trail is a bit milder and fits my shooting quarters. It is a much lighter and shorter gun and requires much less perticulars in shooting.  The rws 350 SO far is like the falcon and is a handfull. At this time the RWS is the MUCH better gun but is very hot. I had the beeman combo 177 / 22 for years and was still a dead on gun when I sold it. Very cheap gun and accurate springer. I liked it BECAUSE YOU GET TO TRY BOTH  177 and 22. Great starter for the $$$$. I have played with these thing from my younger days till now and could buy PB's for the price you pay for these pellet guns. I cannot shoot a PB in the back yard and I get as much enjoyment with the pellet gun now.

34 vs Gamo Silent Stalker vs Benji Trail.
Is like asking, windows xp vs. vista vs. windows 7.

Xp is reliable, proven, but old.
Vista was...
Windows 7 is new, a lil awkward at times, but it sure beats vista.
and they're already working on windows 8... *sigh*

T05 vs T06
Is like windows:XP s.p. 2 vs. s.p.3
just a refinement on an already great trigger. was it necessary? not really.

Get the RWS 34. Very fine German crafted gun. Newer one's should come with the T05 or T06 trigger, both fully adjustable and two stage. The RWS has great iron sights and it's powerplant will last practically forever as long as the shooter does it's part.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.  You confirmed what I was leaning towards.  I will be buying the RWS Model 34.  Can't wait to get started.

I've got an RWS 36C which is a fancier RWS 34 and I simply love it! I've had the "clones" of it and to me at least, they just don't compare to the "real" 34.

I'm a guy that owns LOTS of Chinese guns, but I honestly prefer the "real" thing.  Sounds crazy I know. :)  I have some Chinese guns that I REALLY love too! The Techforce 89 in .22 is great! I've also got a TF 87 underlever which is very good but heavy, and a Beeman 1051.  The Beeman is just like my TF 89, but it has a little prettier stock and is a .177.

Anyway, I find myself drawn to shooting the RWS rifles.  Maybe it is mental since I paid more for them. :D

You said punching paper.
At what range?

The reason I asked is there are other options if you are just going to punch paper, especially if the range is about down at about 10 meters (33 feet).

Wow guys. I don't believe it. The guy is gonna punch paper and you tell him to get a medium priced gun. Anyone offer the Titan which alot of people brag about? It's cheap pricewise, shoots good, but no open sights. If he opted for the Hammerli Titan, it does have sights and less than 150. Even a Disco is overkill. Crosman has alot to offer too. Look at the 1377/PC77. For 50 bucks you get the gun, then 35 for the breech, 26 for the stock, and a bugbuster or red dot. Alot for under 200 and you'll have fun. For paper punching the WORLD DOES NOT REVOLVE OVER RWS

Yeah, he said he'd narrowed it down to the 3. I just picked the one of the three I thought was best. I think the other fellas did too.

FWIW - I think the Daisy 953, 853, or 753 are all better choices for paper punching. (just in case the OP is still open to other options.)
