Title: Once upon a Jackrabbit
Post by: Alan on August 27, 2010, 01:03:10 AM
Ok.  First, I don't know much about the habits of Jackrabbits.  ;D   It was about 6pm - and I had just jumped into the van for the commute home when I remembered I had my Storm with me! After a full day of work and the stresses that come with it, I was ready for a plink'in session to decompress and get the poison out!

Drove a few miles away to spot I knew of to get the poison out.  After about 15 minutes there, I spotted this wabbit about 25yards out.  He was minding his own business nibbling and walking.  I made my way around/over to where I could reach out.  A 10+ mph x-wind, but I was low - shooting nearly level across the yardage gap to the hare - reducing the effect.  Looking through the glass of the Storm XT at 9x, I had a good view of him but he blended in real well with the brown rocky ground surrounding him.  He stopped, I was ready...but DANG he was so thin, I mean streamline - blade-like. I had the mil-dot between his eyes, but my confidence to hit this razor blade on end was low.  His ears were even back.  I cracked the whip on a CPHP - a miss. He stayed....quick reload...feeling lucky he did'nt bolt. He moved around just a little, giving me a little more angle on body - I'm thinking, wait - breath - what would shadow do -  ::) - I went for the throat and the Storm followed through with a smack - he did and immediate backflip then thrashed in the rocky rubble for about 30 seconds. then all was still.  I wandered over, whipped out the nitrile gloves and put him in a box for the ride home.  Once home, we were greeted by mobs of Paparazzi, pics follow.

Very nice!  This last time I was in KS I saw a couple Jack Rabbits on the road.  My brother in law said that they were getting more rare there for some reason.  Lots of cottontails though!

A profile shot on a jack rabbit shouldn't be too hard but you are right head on they are THIN!  The nice thing about rabbits is they are "squishy" compared to most other animals we shoot.  In other words you could almost hit them in the chest instead of the head and take them down.

Excellent shooting and superb pics.  Sure wish I had jacks around here, to me they're like big game bunnies :)

Really enjoyed your hunt.

Jeff

Nice shooting with the Storm!  .177 or .22?  Looks like you hit an artery in the neck.  Nice job.

Thanks guys.  It's just a .177 Harry - nothing compared to the hardware I see on your signature!  Nice herd of AG's.

Thanks Alan.  Don't worry, you 'll have more AG's in 6mos to a year if you are hooked like most of us are here :)   I only have 11 and that's nothing compared to what some others have.  I try to make it up in foot-pounds though ;D
I wish I had jackrabitts!  Looking forward to more of your hunts.
