Title: looking to upgrade
Post by: GaryG on December 25, 2020, 11:46:38 PM
I have a Benji 310 and recently got a 317.  I had expected to get more accuracy out of the 317, but that didn't happen.
So to get improved results in target shooting from 10 to 20 Meters, what rifle would be a good choice for me?  I'm a 70
year old guy that likes the look of traditional metal and wood air rifles.  And I prefer to buy one that's American made!

I've acquired a Daisy 880 and a used Crosman 2100B for my grandsons to shoot. I shoot them with pellets and both are pretty accurate, especially the Daisy. I've never shot BBs with either. I have no experience with the Daisy 853, but they are available used for a reasonable price.

Best of luck, and Happy Holidays...

Archie

Daisy 853, as long as ALL you're doing is shooting target. They're not for small game, except maybe house sparrows, mice.
Extremely accurate, single stroke, almost all wood & metal. They have about the same length of pull as the 310 / 317.

Gary, have you found an 853 yet?  The CMP have them for sale.  You are usually not disappointed in those guns and are most accurate 10M around.

What pellets have you tried, is the crown potentially bad ?
It should be a reasonably accurate gun.

If you want something more accurate,  get a Racine Sheridan streak or a Benji 342.
I recently gave my 342 to my buddy to enable him in the airgun hobby, it's nice and accurate.
I would say my '79 blue streak is a bit more accurate but that '81 342 is no slouch.
I've been shooting the streak since I was a kid, and my buddy was able to start keeping up with me after just an hour with that 342.

I am selling an FX solo .177.  Lowther walther Barrel and crazy accurate.  I can build a bundle to include a hand pump if you need.    The pic may still be in the classifieds here.  Make an offer if you like it. Msg me if I can help.

strange that the 317 is not "accurate enough". every one i have had are tack drivers... maybe cleaning the barrel???. check for velocity variations... there should be very little variation on speed at the same number of pumps... also try different pellets. wadcutters do fantastic out of mine in 5 pumps at 20 yards...  try accuracy at different pumps... you will be amazed at the difference in group size shooting at different pumps.

Don't overlook the tang safety, walnut stocked 397P models, either. Our two 397Ps are our most accurate pumpers. They actually outshoot all of our Sheridans.

You just never know how accurate a particular gun will be until you shoot it.  The 397P has a great reputation for accuracy, mine was just "so-so", I finally sold it.  I do have a 312 and 342 that shoot very well.  A Racine 342 was a disappointment, wouldn't group under 1 1/2" ay 20 yards, became a parts gun.  I am always wary of older .177 Benjamins.  It doesn't take to many steel BBs down the bore to wreck the rifling.
