Funny, last night I was thinking of suggesting a gate for scopes as well
That was one of my first questions here. My NPXL kept eating scopes. I did get a great answer ( over paid about $20 ) on the scope but I love what I got
Also learned a whole bunch about scopes of all sorts after my eyes were opened

Aside from old Leupolds, some Hakkos like the Beeman Blue Ribbon models and such, you won't find very many air-gun rated scopes pre - 80.  Optics for this time period will be more like iron sights and peeps.  But there's certainly room for discussion.  For example, early scopes on pumpers such as a Scopechief .22 or Weaver B4 come to mind.  And then there are the Daisy scopes, although I don't know if they actually had lenses and weren't more or less tube sights.

I think it's excellent. With the progress of airgunning technology, we may have to revise that at some point. :D

Red- are any of the old Weaver's tough enough to hold up to a springer? I saw a beautiful one in a gun shop today, but I don't know much about them. I don't know the year, but from the looks, I'm guessing pretty old (maybe 60's or 70's). I don't even know when Weaver started making scopes.

Weaver's been making scopes since the late 30's or thereabouts.  Came on the scene about the same time as scopes were becoming feasible.

I would not put any of the older powder burner Weavers on a springer.  They are fine scopes but simply not made for the double recoil.

Thanks Red- that's pretty much what I figured, but that old scope was so old-looking that it would look great on one of my old ag's, lol. :D
