Title: Max PSI achieved from a pneumatic pumper?
Post by: Dave S on December 13, 2020, 04:14:28 PM
This question came to mind the last time I was a Mac-1. Being new to the PCP game with my Marauder which starts at 2700 psi. I thought this might be an interesting question.
I did get an answer from Tim and thought it might be interesting to quiz a few of you guys as to what you think. dave

max achievable? or max on a wamart pumper?
the answer to 1 is blurry.. 4500 is perferctly reasoable on a custom build ( or a hand pump strapped to a gun)  , after that seals start to melt during compression , either that or they extrude, or both..
on a stock cheapo pumper , about 1200 max, 900 being more the average .. Adiabatic heating iss more of a limitation than things  people would assume.. ( effort, linkage stress, and so on

Rob, I'm talking about a steroid Dan, Benjamin, Crosman...whatever... pump up gun! BTW, the average pressure fill on most PCP guns is under 3000 psi. Most being tuned starting around 2700 psi. dave

A steroid should be around 1500 to 1600. It could be pumped higher but it won’t dump all the air.
I have pumped my gauge equipped 392 to 3000. It would go higher but I didn’t want to break it.

ok i thought it was a general question because 4500 psi pumpers have been built.. and one made right now is 3600 psi (air venturi i think)

steroid id say 1800 max

Charles....you hit it on the head! Tim told me his Steroids would pump to about 1500 psi.
Rob, yes, there are guns with the higher pressures....how many shots? Just getting into PCP now..I'm impressed how you can shoot in your backyard with a .22 Benjamin Marauder and all you hear is a BOING! 18.1 gr. pellet going almost 800 fps, 25 fpe... and all you hear is a boing!...... If I shot my 180 outdoors....I'd probably have the COPS over! However,  I do have my 15 yard long acoustic attic shooting gallery! 8) dave

yes, airguns offer a lot of freedom.. The aspen has a magazine , the key is you need to keep the chamber full by pumping every so often..Not sure how many shots from a fill when someone refuses to pump it back up

Rob, I bit the bullet about a month ago. $1700.00 later, I have the Marauder Modified by Tim with the Mac-1 550 CI. Tank! Best move I ever made! This thing will drive tacks...like nothing I have ever seen!  Can't wait to go out to 100 yards with it! Can't find a reasonable Bullet drop chart for this one. Soon to do it live! ;) dave

I have no measurments to back it up... but for a standard stock multipump the Seneka dragonfly has to be up there.  The .22 I had was crazy fast.

I was with Tim last Wednesday. He said some of his Steroid Benjamin and  Sheridan Pumpers got up to 25 FPE, with the heavier 18.1  and 25 gr. pellets. Great Guns! dave

IIRC a stock 392 will get around 800psi on 8 pumps, not sure if I’m misremembering that, I do know the steroids are higher and the Aspen is of course 3000psi.
I think the the Giradoni air rifles were pumped to ~850psi.
That’s got me interested in what pressure my 312 and Bluestreak operate at. Lol
