Title: Liking but not writing !
Post by: Scrambler82 on November 10, 2020, 01:59:08 PM
Hello and I am not sure this is the correct place for this suggestion.

I find, that when I read a posting, either within a Post I started or someone else's post that I find interesting, that I want to say something but all too often I don't have the correct wording because I am too much of a novice.

In thinking on this, and of another Web Site, the other Site has a "Like Button" and it makes saying something about the posting without adding a lot of words to the Thread.
Also, without an additional non-meaningful post, the Site would save on storage space.

I know a lot of people think the Like Button is a foolish idea but I have found it a very useful and easy to use idea to quickly post a Like to the posting instead of filling the Site with a bunch of meaningly-less comments that really say nothing.
i.e. "Thanks, I like it, Great idea, Why didn't I think of that" !
All of these comments that we could do without, at least on my end I could do without posting !

Thanks for listening, for reading, and for consideration to improve a quick response to some of the postings !

Grev B., it seems that on this Forum, folks have used the thumbs-up.
Your suggestion is a good one [in my opinion], and should have been part of this Forum before now.  Maybe in the near future - if enough SPONSORS requested it . . . .

I am curious. Does the thumbs up from an iOS show up on other systems?

Believe it or not something as simple as adding a "like/dislike" button requires software changes. A couple things about software changes...
First, unless it's open source software, someone owns the copyrights to the code. Changes would need to come from that owner/s or, at best, approved.
Secondly, programming changes cost money. It's not just a flip of a switch.
And finally, Yes, we have discussed this in the past and it was determined that it could potentially cause unwanted friction among our members.
Not many of us here are professional forum gurus... heck, many of us, including myself, can't even literate, punctuate, correlate or even as it comes to bulls eyes... perforate. But what we can do is share, in our own terms, our knowledge, experience and interests in air gunning.
I've seen, in the past, members ridiculing other members for typos, missed punctuations and post structuring...
I say to them... congratulations... you right gooder than me but, I didn't come here for your opinion and I promise not to offer mine about your shortcomings...  ;D
So please, feel free to offer your airgunning insight, or lack there of. I, for one, got your back...  ;)

All of the above may be right in one sense or another but a simple button is what it is... "A Simple Button" !

It isn't just posting the "LIKE", you need to post, you need to have it accepted... not hard, yes, but a simple button.

What is, is what is... but it would save storage space and I do donate to the site, not much but I am not just coming up with ideas just for someone else to spend money.
I don't understand causing friction... WHY is that ?

Thanks for the feedback, I was just asking, more thinking out loud !
It work well on other sights so I thought if no one had suggested it before it might be a good choice here too.

There is also, albeit more general, this option.....
In the screenshot below, circled in red, is a thread rating feature. With this, members have the option to "rate" the contents/topics/discussions of the thread.
Granted, it's not your 'like' button but for now, it's as close as we're gonna get.
And as always, the staff at GTA appreciate, welcome and consider ALL suggestions from it's members.

Thanks for the input !

Rating a Topic is a touchy point... the Poster may not know who is rating them but if the posting only gets one or two stars overall the Poster may not post again, no matter how much they know about a subject.

A LIKE Button, is just that... "I like what you are saying but I don't have anything more to say" !

The LIKE Button thing is just something I came across on another Site, liked it, yes I pressed the button, and wondered why other Sites didn't have it, Quick and Easy.

I am not really looking to change things, or cause friction as I normally do, I was thinking it might help out somehow.   A quick LIKE Button saves time.

Thanks to all for reading this Thread and Posting but I still LIKE the LIKE Button, oh ya I don't have a button to press...  LoL !

Later

p.s. Where were those stars !

Grev, to see the 'STARS', go back to your first post at the beginning of this thread.  The stars are in the information bar right above.

I brought up this same subject a month or two ago. Had a couple positive comments but as was posted above, they’ve been there, done that, and it was unsuccessfully tried before. Oh well...I’ll use thumbs then (but somehow they Only work on my phone!)... 8)

Not trying to be a PITA... butt, I think once the "LIKE Button" was put in-place it will be accepted, it works so much easier.  It is quicker, no extra words are needed, push and you are done.

I read three posting this AM where the "LIKE Button" would have worked perfectly, I didn't know much about the overall posting but the idea of the posting was good and a quick LIKE would have worked perfectly but atlast there was no button !  LoL !

I'm just making suggestions as I see it, not trying to stir the pot too much !

Thanks all for reading and posting !

As I had already stated in the 2nd post, it has already been tried, and then removed, because it was found to be unfavorable.

If you like or dislike just post it and reason why,  right?

How hard is that.    You get a bunch of thumbs down for something never knowing why  or reason  .

For me, I would just have to say that the concept makes some sense; but the execution would be problematic... I do not use Flakebook (sorry, couldn't help myself-sincerest apologies to all who use it to keep in touch with friends and family or just enjoy the platform), so "Liking" posts is a phenomena that confuses me... That is, I don't really know how to use it? I have joined one other forum, which has a like button, and can say that it is driving me nuts.... If I'm reading a 40+ post long thread and "like" all the comments, I now feel obligated to hit 40+ little like buttons  :o... And if I miss someone's post, they will think that I singled them out for some reason; creating ill will through my inability to spend ages trying to "like" every single post that I find useful/helpful/whatever... I just mean to say that for some folks, a "like" button, like, kinda like drives us like, nutsssssss.... :P

Jesse, you're reading my mail. Exactly how I feel and have felt when a friend didn't like my post.

I VERY RARELY "Like" posts because I think the like button just strokes peoples ego for no particular reason. If I really like something I make a post that is indicative of the reason I really like it. I think the "Like button" expresses SEEN rather than LIKE for most users! I think that for some the LIKE button is just a lazy way to get affirmation of popularity.

Disclaimer: No offense, intended or implied to any particular person! Just my GENERAL observation/opinion of "Liking" a post".

IMHO
The simple posting of "AGREED" (which I often do) is just a few key strokes and is more of a personal contribution than a picture of a thumb.

Moderators, 😊

I LIKE 👍🏼 the thread rating feature!!

Well, I should say I would LIKE it.
Because I'm on Firfox (most recent update)/ Android — and I can't see the thread rating feature....

Maybe instead of adding new features, we could fix the features we already have.
I'd LIKE that very much. 😊

A like button would be great as long those likes don't lock into the "show unread post" section.  I have some in mine that has been there for a good year or better with no way to get rid of them.  Those are extremely annoying to the point I don't post on many threads that I would like to.  Just in case they live on forever.

Don't misunderstand a LIKE button, it isn't meant for everyone to like a thread just fr the poster to get the most likes or you don't have to ike eery post.

It is just used for a quick "I like what you said".
