Title: TX200 MK III Accuracy
Post by: Roland on November 03, 2020, 05:06:26 PM
Having a problem with my TX 200 accuracy.  I’ve installed a Vortex Kit and mounted a Leapers 3-12x44 rifle scope on the TX.  Shooting H&N Barracuda Match  10.65 gr. pellets at 10 meters using a Bog Pod for a rest, I am getting groups measuring 1/4-1/2 inches. Problem is I can shoot one or two groups getting 1/2 in and the shoot the next group getting 2-4  rds. at 7:00 and1-4 rds  in the bulls eye. It varies from target to target. I may get all five rds. in a group at 7:00. As I have two scopes exactly the same I’ve switched scopes. Same result. I’ve tried different pellets and weights with H&N giving the best groups. I’ve tried different cheek welds. Total loss there.  I’ve also checked all screws to insure they are tight. I’m down to this being a mechanical problem but I’m not sure where to start looking. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Roland,
I shoot 8.64 H&N, 4.52mm (size does make a difference).
Most shooters though use 8.4 grain pellets..
Try a lighter pellets..

If you have never cleaned the barrel you should.

Patchworm works great.

I use JSB 7.87, JSB 8.44 and H&N FTT all in the 4.52mm headsize.

What power level is your kit at? It's harder to shoot a 13+fpe springer accurately than a sub 12fpe.

As far as rest goes, I see most shooters shooting with their bipod resting on the stock where the front stock screws are to keep it consistent. Other than ensuring your scope is properly secured, checking for a consistent velocity, playing with different grips, trying other pellets, dirty barrel, or maybe you aren't used to shooting a springer yet. I think those are most of the issues.

I'm shooting JSB Exact in 8.4 grain, 4.52 diameter.  My TX-200 is right at 12 fpe with a spring from Air Rifle Headquarters and their piston seal as well.  It groups tight and consistent at forty yards.

It could be the spring is too strong, or you got a "power kit"?  Have you put it through a Chronograph to see what it's shooting and if it's consistent and getting low (SD) standard deviation?  Did you lube the internals properly?

It could be a seal issue.  Did you replace the seal?

Barrel is cleaned after every session, Ive been shooting springers for years, the Vortek  kit is a TX200-PG3 HO tune kit which I installed last August., and from what I understand is a 12 fpe. I haven’t run it through a chronograph. Have to give it a try. I have 8.44 JSB Pellets that I’ll definitely try. I’m going to try moving the bi pod under the forearm screw. Barring all that I’ll take it down, relube and check the seals. Thank you all for your advice. I really appreciate it.

“Barrel is cleaned after every session“

I have had my TX since 2014...
14,000 shots +
I have never cleaned the barrel..

I have read that some guns do well with a bipod while others do not.  You may want to experiment a bit with how and where to support the forearm.

If you have the 12 fpe kit, I would definitely recommend the JSB or AA 8.4 gr pellets.

Hi Roland,
I feel your pain. I have the same issue with my TXs. I've done everything everyone suggested. (stock screw, chrono, change scopes...and I went thru a ton of scopes..clean the barrel etc). I was successful sometimes and found some issues (failing spring, loose forearm bracket screw, bad scope).

Not saying this is your case. But in my case, after eliminating scope, gun and environmental forces...I had to look in the mirror and work on my technique. Consistent hold and consistent trigger control. That point really drove it home for me when I was shooting Field target. 10.5 yard Tiny little kill zone but at 50X magnification you could fit 3 mil hash in there. I missed it 3 times (it was a 3 shot per target match). My buddy said let me try...I told him where to aim... and he knock it down, looked at me and said there's nothing wrong with your gun. Right then and there I knew I got a ton of work to do.

Good luck. I hope this is not your issue. Those springers will humble you.

I highly recommend a Tony Leach piston set up. The felt recoil is night and day and your grouping will shrink.

The other thing I'll looking into is soft bedding my TX...I've read mix results with TX with this technique.

If you are cleaning your barrel after every session that’s a problem.  Don’t do that.  Just shoot your rifle and if there is any kind of wind write off good groups.

I agree with this, I don't clean my barrel until accuracy starts to go downhill, then it takes quite a few seasoning shots before accuracy returns.
