Title: A permanent shooting bench
Post by: lizzie on September 10, 2011, 11:35:58 PM
Here's a link to plans for a really heavy-duty permanent shooting bench. It's a great plan, but put it where you plan to leave it, because it's a major undertaking to move it. It works for both right and left-handed shooters, and is made from pressure treated lumber to withstand the elements. To make it even better, a layer of thin indoor-outdoor grade carpet to cover the entire top is a nice addition. :)

Looks beefy enough for a .50 cal. machine gun!

Man, that looks Cat 5 hurricane proof!
The only change I'd make is change the 5/4 top wood to 1 X 6 T & G composite decking.
Thanks for posting this Lizzzie.

What more could you ask for. Thanks for sharing.

WOW Lizzie, that really will be heavy.   Would be great to build and put down by the pond.   Heck,  could probably hang a diving board off the front ;)

Well since I live in S Florida  I'm going to make one.. For Cat 5 protection, I would recommend  slightly longer legs and a few bags of concrete!  Bang goes portability though

Definitely a SUBSTANTIAL bench! Has anybody figured out, or even guesstimated, material cost?

I just looked back at Lizzie's subject line, "A permanent shooting bench." Yep, it's permanent, it will last longer than I will! Good find, Lizzie.

Lumber prices are really good compared to just a few years ago, so probably not as much as you might think. It could also be built of untreated lumber, but would need to be coated well in order to prevent degradation from rain and sun.

The bolded would be an excellent top for it. I don't know how the prices compare, but I'm thinking T&G would add a little bit to the overall expense, but it would probably be superior in maintaining a level surface without warping being a concern.
