Title: Database of dead Shoeboxs and parts?
Post by: mcoulter on October 08, 2020, 12:15:55 PM
I picked up a used Shoebox F10 a couple of years ago and it's been great.  I really love it.  It's truly perfect for my needs.

BUT…  as we all know they're no longer supported and I truly hope to keep mine ticking as long as possible.  To this point, I'd love to start a database of dead shoebox compressors; the model, what functional parts might be available in it, and a contact method to enable folks to reach each other.

To this end, can I get input from folks on what information this database should contain?

Here's my starting point of what data would be essential.

Shoebox database – *example info only below*

Shoebox Model / What's broken? / What's working? /Willing to disassemble for specific parts? / Contact info

F10 / Motor burned up / Pretty much everything else / Pickup only – I don't want to deal with boxing and shipping anything / mcoulter@syr.edu

My hope is that we can build a "database" of parts from shoeboxes that are currently paperweights that current owners could pick from to keep their models going.

Thoughts?  Comments?

I appreciate the desire to do this, but I'm not sure that many people will want to "play along" - and I don't mean that in any bad way in terms of reflecting on them.  I know that if I were to have my Shobeox die and I were to decide to move on from it (hopefully unlikely, as I stocked up on many parts so I hope I am set), I would probably offer it for sale for parts all at once rather than to maintain a small "parts business" with it slowly parting out over time.

That said, if somebody wanted to have several dead ones for that purpose, I would be happy sell my future dead one to them at a reasonable price.

Hi Alan, I'm getting that feeling too.  No worries!  I guess we'll all search for parts individually if/when we need them!

I like the idea, but agree with Alan.   Things like the motor, power switch, pressure switch, should be able to find repacements or mod to fit a replacement.  The custom parts, cylinder, pistons, block, are going to the harder issue.

Like Alan, I have a good stock of spares, that hopefully never have to consider replacing it.

My lower cylinder took a dump yesterday. It's blowing air out of the black end cap. I replaced all the o rings yesterday and it's still passing air out of the end cap. Any ideas on what this could be? Otherwise I might have some extra parts. Mine is an older belt drive Shoebox.

Well, that black end cap holds the spacers and thus the o-rings in place.  My guess (and it is only a guess) would be that if the air is coming out there then that would indicate a problem with the o-ring closest to that spacer - and by extension possibly with the spacers themselves.

I do know that the spacers are wear items, and that after a long time they can need replacement. Any chance that yours is worn in a way that is causing it to put pressure on the o-ring in a way that is breaking the seal to the cylinder or piston?  That is what I would look for first.

Thanks Alan. I suspect it must be the spacer. I've changed the o rings twice and got the same results twice. I've had to rebuild this compressor a couple of times over the years and o rings always solve the issues. I wish I would have bought some extra spacers before Tom went out of business.

Two belts one new
New Insert Ferrellkit for the lower cylinder
The tower   with belt drive and intact lower cylinder
Prefilter set up with a McMaster car filter.
Bunch of misc parts.

Brian,

The trouble I have is getting out to ship stuff.

My upper cylinder froze in the tower, so I was not sure if the bottom cylinder would come out, but I tried it and it came out easily.

My parts that I have
