I have a 397 with a Williams peep installed.
My question is, can I easily remove the rear sight without destroying it or scratching things up? It looks like it just snaps on and could be removed by spreading the base. I do not want to cause damage and I'm sure someone has a hint as to how to do this.
Thank you

To remove the original sight I just tapped the base off the wedges with a piece of wood dowel and a hammer. Comes right off and didn't hurt anything. I was not comfortable with trying to prize it off. Tap towards the front or back not up.

Yep!
Should have small black plastic wedges that fit in the groove between the barrel and pump tube.
I also used a wood dowel and a small hammer to tap it forward / backward off the wedges.

Are the newer guns using plastic wedges? I have a couple 392-P's and a transitional 397PA and those are metal wedges.
Even with the metal wedges, if they slide a little bit while you tap the sight off of them, they don't scratch the finish. If you want to be really careful, cut a thin dowel into two sections, the length being equal to the distance between the rear of the wedges and the receiver. Tape these in place in the groove between barrel and pump tube, between the rear of the wedges and the magazine. These will hold the wedges in place as you tap the rear sight off, rearward.
You might have to whittle part of the length of the dowel so it doesn't get in the way of the rear sight as it moves backwards.
Oh, and put a little masking tape over the top of the barrel so you don't bump and mar the finish as you tap the sight off.

May not be plastic... going from memory on that.
