Title: Ok folks school me up on the P-rod a bit
Post by: DeadEye Ice on July 19, 2020, 12:44:55 PM
I am interested in getting a P-Rod and building it up hello rabbit hole!  However I have a few questions.

1.  Are the only differences in the P-Rod and the Woods Walker the cammo coating and the included red dot sight?  I'm kind of drawn to it but the red dot won't be used long I doubt, and the camo isnt a breaking point for the price difference.

2.  I see that Marmot Malitia was aquired by WAR and supsequently WAR seems to have gone out.  Are there any Marmot Militia barrels still for sale anywhere or have the supplies been bought up?  If so do they ever appear on the used market?  I think that is an upgrede I'm interested in unless some of you can recommend another barrel.

3.  What is up with stock on the P-Rod and variants, most vendors including crossman show out of stock, backorder or preorder?

I think that covers the big questions i have for the moment.

Yes, the only difference between woods walker and Prod, are the camo pieces and red dot.  The red dot has too large of a dot.   The camo pieces can be purchased through crosman, but will have to coax one of their reps to look up the part numbers.  Schematic is not released.

The MMHF barrels are accurate, but do require frequent cleaning.   if your prod barrel is not accurate, I'd look into someone machining a LW for it.   Probably similar cost to the HF.

I assume crosman has had limited production capacity during covid.   I believe they also que up and do batch builds.  They don't have separate mfg lines for each product.

Yup wait for a super sale P-rods can be had for just around 300.00, add what you want after, took me a few years to decide a regulated brod was for me, factory .22 barrels are for the most part solid performers now days, unless the Crosman Team is out of practice by now J//K I hope.  ???

I put my P-rod purchase off way too long , think I passed on 2 or 3 @ 300.00 sales before I took the plunge, I was power hungry in the first part of my airgun quest , but found great times in the low and slow high shot count area as of late.

I was deep into airguns before I signed on to GTA and finally caved when I felt I could be of assistance and gain more form our friends here on the GTA.

Forgive me but i know mrod, prod, and synrod, but what does brod stand for?  That ks great to hear about the stock barrels.  I plan a huma reg, a jsar valve, tp  and o- ring hammer upgrade.
I'm torn on using donny fl mod or extended shroud with rocker1 insert.

Yup I finally grew up and became a bottle baby, even though it still has a fill nipple, I'm regulated to 1800 PSI ish, the sweet spot in a stock P-rod, but have a Carbon fiber 4350 psi bottle and regulator adapted to the factort air tube , caution and research is advised when making these mods , one reason it took me so long.

Also I am so cheap I waited out for rock bottom pricing on the parts ;)

James, I was like you and had one in my sights for quite awhile and finally took the plunge last year on Crossman’s Black Friday sale! So glad I did, low power, accurate and FUN! I too chased power in .22 but have found a soft spot in my heart for this incredible little carbine 🤗.

On-line reviews/problems last "forever",so a lot of what you might read  may have been true then....the new ones sem to be a lot better (barrel wise) than the early ones.....I'd not think about rebarreling either until I test the snot out of them.

Old or new,Crosman can let a really good barrel "slip by" by accident (although the odds are better now than then)....and I'd hate to not know if the after market barrel $$ being spent was really an improvment.

Make wonderful little lite .22  14-16 foot pound carbines.  Can go more power/less shots...or bottle convert it for more volume/more shots...but as it is,undid the power mods and left it as a moderate power little lite carbine.

For me...they kind of not so good at pistol-pistols....you end up shooting it as if it had a "pretend/invisible" butt stock......may as well have a real butt stock and just ignore it if you want to shoot it like a pistol-pistol.

Hadn't noticed that they've been harder to find/out of stock....wondering why.

Not a giant fan of cammo pattens...at least most of them....red dots don't cost any more than scopes, so if that is your urge, won't really be any more money to mount one of your choice.

I full well had every intention of testing the factory barrel first, but like to know my options too.  Hopefully the barrel will be a good one!

As for the red dot it wouldn't stay on there long before getting replaced by a scope.

The camo really doesnt mean too much to me.  Maybe its the photography or what I'm not sure, but in the pictures the woods walker draws my eye more.  It might be a mind, or eye thing.
