Title: Steel vs peek
Post by: Vmaxpro on July 15, 2020, 02:53:16 PM
In the same gun ( different valve seats) which one would be prefered? I made both and will be testing this weekend. The steel I did from a reamer blank, its unfinished in the pic and the other is peek. The peek is .345 diameter, steel is .310.

Steel because of LESS diameter / area will have less effort to crack open if on an equally hard PEEK seat.

Tho pending how resilient the seat is being used with the steel poppet ??? ... that in use may prove different.

Profile of Steel poppet will have better flow into the throat, tho will require a tad more lift to equal the area of the peek poppet early in the lift cycle.

Motorhead, is there a specific material you would reccomend for the seat?

Softest seat ive ever used on a 45 degree taper was aluminum and there was only .012 seat face per side. Seemed fine, no evidence I could tell of the seat sinking but it was only a quick test maybe 40 shots or so.

Aluminum with a steel poppet is IMO the LEAST desirable because the seat has ZERO resiliency and easily damaged, scratched or dented by micro debris.
PEEK, Delrin or Glass or AF grade acetals work well as seats with metal poppets.

Thanks for the info motorhead, everything worked great! Im about 3/4 back out of my hammer spring from stock, and 2 turns back from the .340 peek poppet. Thats about all i was trying to accomplish so thanks again!
