Title: Project pondering.
Post by: Nomadic Pirate on July 12, 2020, 02:51:21 AM
So, I spent a good part of the day sizing down a assortment of various .25 bullets I have,

during the tedious, boring process I had plenty time to think  ;D ;D

It reminded me that I have a Mould for the 58gr Bob Boat Tail bullet, and of course since I was using it a .251 sizer  ;D ;D

I was thinking that I would like to have a .25 repeater that can shoot those 58gr

So I'm thinking,.....I could find a .357 Rainstorm or get a Winchester .357 or .45

then buy a good unchoked .25 barrel, re-barrel the big bore, sleeve the magazines to take the .25 ( Evanix .357 and .45 magazines are way longer then the .25 so can take long .25 bullets )

Of course all this would be done by Will Piatt :) :) since he would need to also machine a probe and tune the gun.

the .357 or .45 platforms should be easy to tune to shoot the 58gr bullet at 950-1000 fps for a nice 115-130 FPE

yes I sure would like a gun like that  ;D ;D

What barrel should I buy ?

I'm shooting 59 grain slugs out of my Sumatra.

Yeah, I used to shoot them out of Sumatras and Careers, but I want to stay with the Rainstorm platform and also I think from a .357 or .45 can be tuned for more power then a Sumatra.

Do you want to be able to shoot pellets?  Or just slugs?  if just slugs, the TJ's 25-20 is a great choice......if pellets and slugs, the TJ's .25 auto.

Yeah, I prefer to be able to shoot both, especially the 43gr EunJin and I have a mould for a heavy pellet too.

Thanks for the suggestion on the TJ and the difference :)

Bullfrog reminded me of the .308 caliber,

Now I'm thinking .25 or .308 ?

he mentions that the .308 barrels can shoot both .308 bullets and .30 pellets

I have also a heavy .30 pellet mould and .308 moulds and cast bullets are aplenty to be found.

something else to ponder.

This sounds like an interesting project.  Keep us in the loop.

Oh, and why not opt for 2 barrels- both .25 and .30/.308  ?

You got me there :) :)

apart from cost it would make sense,

but, I think I would convert 2 guns in that case,......man, to have unlimited funds, how fun would it be ?!?! :) :)

definitely sounds like an interesting project. I've been mulling over adding a .30 to the stable; mostly because of that spitzer round. Looks like it'll be pretty damaging.

Manny,.. I have a tj 308 on my Cothran . I believe it’s 1-20 twist and shoots the 50 grain jsb perfect.. although their screaming because of the Cothran valve. But if you have a mold for the heavier pellets the tj shoots them very well. And I’ve shot the 95? Grain bbt and a 110 grain out of it and they were accurate as well to 100 yards. It’s a great barrel. I believe the .30 barrel designed by Bob will shoot pellets and slugs also.

Great info thanks,

a .308 made out of a Winchester .45 should really get some solid FPE, and the .45 mag is long enough to be able to use a bunch of the heavier .308 rounds.

I love it when you put out an idea, ...then folks come in with other info and input and the idea morphs,

not that I'm decided but I love the exchange of Ideas  ;D ;D

Manny, I've been pondering those Winchesters for over a year.  Sometimes the .35 drops big-time on Amazon, sometimes it is the .45.  However, just thinking about the magazine size alone and what the length of it can accommodate, the .45 simply offers more especially with a barrel swap.

Didn't know they sold them on Amazon !!!

yeah, the longer .45 Magazine would lend itself much better for this kinds of projects :)

Knowing what I know now, I should have saved up all my Amazon credit/gift cards from last year and bought one.  The platform itself seems to have some overhead for tuning, and the wide range (and ever-growing) choice of projectiles certainly lends itself to shooting these.
