Title: 1760 starling kill
Post by: melvin on July 10, 2020, 11:43:09 AM
Lately I’ve been playing around with .177 and co2. I recently put together a cheap 1760 and have been feeding it a lot of ammo. It shoots pretty good until the power starts to decrease when the co2 is getting low. The poi changes a lot. (Fliers) I was shooting this morning and (bird watching). Three pellets in on a new co2 cartridge a starling flew 5 yards behind my target. (25 yards total). I managed a very clean headshot with the HNN field target trophies in .177 I forgot the weight of them. 8.7 grain I think. Anyhow a nice start to my day. :)

Im starting to realize just how ignorant I was when I dismissed this caliber.

Melvin, tell us a bit more about your "1760". I'm all ears, as Ross Perot used to say.

Haha. It’s super simple. I ordered a new 2260 from Crosman along with a .177 disco barrel. The power adjuster I ordered a month prior from Mellon air along with bolt handle and probe. The breech came from a Disco and the moderator was done by Mike at TKO.

I really enjoy 2260s.  Classic hunting rifle style very similar to the rimfires I shot in Boy Scouts.

I built this to match my pcp, and co2 2260.

It’s not decked out by any means but a very fun little rifle. It could use a barrel crown however. My last order from Crosman was poops. That 2260 came with a very bent barrel and the .177 barrel crown looked like a high school kid did it in metal shop. I’m assuming the crown is the reason I get the poi shifts when the cartridge is starting to loose pressure.

Got a second. I got this guy from my barn on my archery range. This was a stretch of a shot and I actually can’t believe I got him. Chest shot with broken wing at no less than 35 yards. Upon retrieval he was coughing  blood so I quickly dispatched him.

The FTTs are advertised as 8.64 grain but they weigh in at 8.7 (on my scale anyway).  And they do work great on starlings and HOSP, I was doing chest shots and they all went down without even twitching at about 15 yards.
