Title: Could you Crown owners enlighten me about the Criwn VP
Post by: Lani52 on June 22, 2020, 07:41:32 PM
I felt the Criwm to be out of my price range, then I looked the VP up to see what the difference was,and I had my reasons.

PA says the aluminum tank is the issue and the only issue, do feel that is correct?

What generation is the Crown VP?  It has the externally adjustable regulator, hammer spring adjuster and 3 position transfer port.

Here is why this us important to me, I have a new cf .5L tank that I bought for my TexanLSS 257.  I purchased a chinese 4500 psi cf tank off ebay and was not convinced that it would get here due to the virus, so I ordered a TalonTunes tank, which turned out to be lighter, so I put the TT tank on the Texan.

I have been trying to decide between the Dreamline ciassic and the Wildcat III, now this revelation of a Crown for 1250  Bucks mated to a cf .5L bottle I have been trying to find a use for seems fortuitous.

At one time I owned both a Royale 400 and 500 and I loved them.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Roachcreek

Have I found a home for this?

The air cylinder and the scope rail are different (VP is dovetail)

Thanks,,

Yes it really does, PA tells me the Dreamline pienum will not fit on the Crown though.

RC Ask---"Have I found a home for this"?

Answer---"Y" Yes! Yes You Have!!!

Most of the Crowns I have seen also do not have picatinny. Only the Continuum. Perhaps the latest do?

Mike,

Life could be worse eh?

The VP seems to be the only Crown made now with the dovetail.  Perhaps FX is using up their old receivers.

I can’t really say that it makes that much difference to me.  Of 5 airguns I own 4 have dovetails, scopes have not fallen off yet.

I suppose that someone on the forums with a lathe could make me a plenum.  I would also need a superior barrel at some point.

Decisions, decisions,

Did you want it shipped with pellets too?  Maybe a scope and bipod?

You will have to wait for P.A. to set the in stock date up a few times.  And at our age that can get serious fast old friend.

Old age. ya got that right RC. Nope, have fantastic bipod, don't shoot pellets in long guns, so------ ;)

I went over to the FX site. Only receiver they show with a picatinny for the Royals is the continuum. That may be in the works to change though. I have no idea.

I use adapters on my non picatinny rails. It allows me to use quick disconnect mounts.
They have them at a lower cost.  I just grabbed this selection for illustration purposes.  ;)

Yes I use those also, and I also use the UTG 11 to Picatinny rail, that and lasers on most of my airguns so I can dial them in when I play musical scopes.

I have a thread on AGN asking these same FX Crown questions.  Got the “what you going to use it for and it is not easy to shoot 200 yards” when I told them tha is what I want it for. ::)

Seems the Dreamline is off the table, it does not seem to have the lungs for it. On the Crown C, I don’t want to spend 1800 bucks for a rifle and 2 barrels that are outdated and devalued by the advent of the superior barrel.

Seems like I am running out of FX options.

The Dreamline does not have the lungs.
The Crown needs extensive machining to do what I want.
The Wildcat III while the pick of the litter, does not have the power of my Skyhawk in 22, nor my Seneca Carbine in 25 and is much lower in energy than a Texan 257or 30.

And about the Texan, if I purchase a 457, put my spare .5L cf bottle on it and do the valve work, it would be a much better 200yard rifle for shooting steel.  I know this as my less powerful Ranger 45 could keep all of the 408 swc’ s on steel  in a elk sized kill zone at 300 yards.

Only detrimental aspect of not getting a FX super gun is I won’t be a star on the AGN forum. ;D

So for now, it will most likely be  a Texan 457 , wOk guard and a off set bottle attachment and use what is left over for a mold in the 250-275 grain range.

Hey Roach, sorry for the late response (I forgot to check notify for replies). Ok, so I had experimented with the Crowns extensively. The most that I ever got out of them in 22 cal was around 76FPE with a 700mm FX liner using 36gr MP ammo. The ammo was sent to me by a friend, but they were not in the greatest shape (drive bands were gnarly from sizing, excess lead at the base, deformed a bit from 49:1 mixture) so they didn't shoot too well. I stuck with 30gr Varmint Knockers mostly for hunting, and they were accurate to 300y in lesser winds (shooting 22oz cans).

The Crown is a certified broomstick at 700mm, but it's definitely one of the most comfortable airguns to shoot! Balance, ergonomics, and very lightweight. I bought the 600mm 22 cal (dovetail) Crown from Bob_O, and loced it so much that I bought a Continuum. The block / reg / internals were the same. I kept the 600mm barrel and I'm running it in my Taipan (it's VERY accurate, probably 1 out of 25 judging by the other liners I have bought and worked in), so I converted that Crown to a 700mm .30 cal and saw 108FPE with 50.15gr JSBs. Sold both rifles on AGN a few months back.

Here was my build thread: https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/my-verdict-on-the-fx-crown-continuum/ (https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/my-verdict-on-the-fx-crown-continuum/)

I don't know if it's possible to get the power out of a Dreamline without a long barrel, +40-60cc's of plenum extensions, and leg work with porting and with the hammer system.

The new Wildcat looks interesting, but it's a little bulky for my taste. That might have the power potential you need though.

I loved the feel of the Crown, hate the length - my Vote out of those 3 is the WC III

Whoops, this was my power tuning thread. https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/power-tuning-mods-for-the-fx-crown/ (https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/power-tuning-mods-for-the-fx-crown/)

I was also strategizing on a plenum expansion, leaning towards an extension coming off the front of the block between the air cylinder, using an external Altaros. That creates a lot of other challenges, like hammer / valve redesign and whatnot. The "simpler" option is re-tapping the gauge larger for an external plenum, but I didn't care for thr idea of a plenum hanging down from the rifle, and I decided that it wouldn't be worth my time.

You can crank up the gen3 AMP regs pretty high to scale power. I bought a Huma "high pressure" reg for it, configured for 140-190bar, but I never found a need to install it. I ran two different tunes with the Continuum (one at 158bar and the other at ~175).

I got an answer back from P.A on barrel options on the Crown VP.

They will come with the 600 mm superior barrel.

Interestingly I checked the penetration in flesh numbers on the 3 calibers offered in the Wildcat III.  They were all within less than one inch at maximum velocity.

I have several friends with FX airguns (mostly Crowns and Impacts) and the 25 caliber Crown is an excellent choice for shooting 200+ yards with the heavier JSB pellets.  And the 600mm barrel will do just fine.  I have a very high regard for FX airguns.

I watched my regular buddy kill a squirrel at a measured 230 yards with his 25 Crown (on the third shot).  We verified the distance with our laser range finders after the kill.  This buddy can be annoying with his Crown, because I set up a target at 100 (or even 150) yards and he shoots out my bullseye before I get a chance to take my first shot.  He dials in the scope turrets for windage and elevation.  I prefer setting my zero then using mildots and holdover because I make errors when I change my scope settings while shooting.

Here is his set-up:
Crown with 600mm pellet barrel liner.
MTC Viper Pro 5-30×50
FX No Limit Scope Mounts
JSB Diabolo Exact King Heavy .25 Cal, 33.95 gr (or the MKII)
His gun is tuned to shoot these pellets around 950 fps

He also has the 30 cal parts and the slug liner, but he mostly shoots the set-up above.

If I were to buy a new airgun tomorrow, it would be either a Uragan or an FX Crown.
