Title: Child forum
Post by: 3040Kraig on June 22, 2020, 02:41:25 PM
What is the point of the child boards here in the Benjiman gate?  i posted a thread there and it hasn't received a lot of responses.  Are the Benjimans just considered a kids rifle?

Crosman, Benjamin, and Sheridan are all popular with many members.  The number of responses you get are probably proportional to the interest level of individuals reading the post or their determination of their ability to help or answer intelligently.  Remember, most people who would answer are members just like you - some with more experience, some with less.

OK I found it seems there is help on the way.

Some of his suggestions can be explored, that and 10.5 gr pellets should get you shooting straight, if not keep the thread going till it works :)

yea the site needs to be cleaned up and about 40% of the gates are useless .. its only serving to confuse new members and have the moderators constantly working to reorganize.

It makes perfect sense to me.  The original post was about a problem with a Crosman gun.  It was moved to the Crosman gate.

This forum is a strange bird.
Simplicity and origination are not its strong points.  ;)

I agree it's not how I would do the organizing. I know the intent is to have it organized but the affect is that things get spread out and get overlooked by many that would see them if the "organizing" was reduced IMHO. I can easily scroll though a long list but to have to go to so many different places I know I miss things. I will say my interests are diverse and many so what would work better for me might be a hindrance for those that have focused and narrow interests.

When I first got here I realized there were a Lot of places I would need to look through to figure out where my interests fit in.

It was exacerbated by the fact I switched "favorites" soon after (went from older bulkfill QB78s and related accessories to the latest versions of new PCPs) so I then started gravitating to those types of thread subjects.

Now I go right to my favorite sections and after reading through them (like on a daily basis ::)) I then go click on

"Show unread posts since last visit"

and

"Show new replies to your posts."

and hop in to comment on subject titles that interest me.

Like this one right here. Hi guys! ;D

So for me personally all is good (unless they come out with something super cool like a laser gun you can hunt small game with), but otherwise I can see the others' points. Especially the newer guys.

LOL..... 'child boards' have nothing to do with children or youth guns. Child boards are simply sub folders under topic gates to further narrow down specific info.
For example.... a gate for information on springers would be quite crowded so attempts have been made to split some of them into 'child boards' specific to origin or brand.

I don't find navigating this forum difficult. I use one of 4 options when visiting the forum.
1) At the top of the page I use "Show replies to your posts". This will show updates to any thread you have posted in since you last looked.
2) "Show new post since last visit". This shows new posts made since your last visit regardless if you've replied to the thread.
3) Google is your friend. I use google to search. I include 'gateway to airguns" in my search criteria. Admittedly, the forum's search function leaves something to be desired.
4) I manually navigate to the Classified gate.

I recently joined and almost joined the other big air gun forum for that exact reason...however, I went with GTA because the majority of the internet searches for questions I had came back to either Crosman pistol owners forum or GTA...the first wasn't taking new people so I went with GTA but yes, I'd like to see the gates simplified. For other hobbies, I find belonging to more than one forum to be a chore so I'd like to stick to GTA if possible.

for pre windows XP users the forum is easy....for windows 7 or Mac user level experience this forum will be quite the trial...

Whether it is reorganized or not (and I myself have no desire to see much more changing), I do have one suggestion - how about just editing it from Child to something more airgunn-ish, like Offspring(er) Boards?
(hey, see what I did there? ;D)

Yeah I thought child boards were for kids too so I ignored them altogether. A bit complicated to find your way around but practice makes perfect
