I read in a couple of places that airgun “cans” are very inexpensive in Europe - in the sub-$50 price range. I’m wondering, if I only need a little bit of sound moderation, if inexpensive compact solutions exist. The principle seems pretty simple and I’m surprised they are so expensive.
Any sources for cheap sound suppressors that maybe aren’t the most effective but tone things down a bit?
-
It really depends on what you are using them on. Fpe plays a part in what quality you need
The inexpensive ones will hold up fine on low powered guns, but wont stand up to higher power. Check with Geo on here, guy on eBay sells some cheap also.
-
I would take a look at our own Rocker-1. Great prices, very well made. ;)
-
Thanks. I am looking to take the volume of my TalonP down a few notches. Doesn’t have to be silent, just not booming quite so much. It’s a 50 fpe gun - guess it needs to be durable
Does Rocker-1 have a web site or sell on eBay?

50 fpe will kill the internals of many commercial European made silencers. If you have some basic tools and bench drill you can always DIY. Check AWT style silencers, a perforated pipe with baffles and a chamber made from plastic tube around it. Easy to build and very effective. Aliexpress had some oil or fuel filter "casings" with 1/2" thread that you can fill with whatever you want.

David (Rocker1) makes awesome ones IMO !!!

Hello --
Not an inexpensive suppressor, but will stand up to the 50FPE Talon P .25, I have the DonnyFL Sumo spun up on my Talon P. Below are some prelim work with this combination.
The set up is in my garage, finished ceilings, open on one side (car entry). In brief conversation with DFL folks, they mentioned that lot of folks shoot in confined spaces, porches, basements, &c., so initial set up is with that in mind. Gun tuning uses 0.123" valve restrictor orifice, and PW'd mid-range. These are dry-fires, no pellet. Two reports, first unsupressed, second has can spun on. The sound file is compressed for the upload.

You'll never make a 50 FPE gun silent! As has been mentioned, you'll need something pretty strong to keep it from blowing the internals out.
-
Does Rocker-1 have a web site or sell on eBay?
Contact him through private message on this forum.
His LDC's and internals will easily hold up to 50FPE. Not sure if he makes any for AF guns, but have a chat with him.

+1000 on Rocker1... contact him here through PM.

Neil Clague is the man for quitting down high powered air guns.
Very reasonably priced with great performance.
You get what you pay for. My motto is: "Buy once, cry once". ;)
-
Thanks for the tips. Just to be clear - not looking for silent or even quiet. Just a little bit less of a boom.
Maybe I have to live with the boom if I don’t want to spend over $100 on this. I just don’t want the neighbors hearing all the “booms” every time I shoot in my garage. I don’t know how much the sound carries but if it sounds more like someone hammering and less like someone shooting I’d be happy.

Mr. P I have another thread going on this topic about backyard friendly. I am curious why you would shoot a 50 ft lb air rifle in the garage?
-
Thought crossed my mind as well.
Can at least tone down a 50 foot pound TalonP....haven't found a good way to make a really significant noise reduction without increasing length at least some.
Think 85-90% of the noise reduction of a shoud/is about what happens in the section ahead of the barrel...what's fed back into the rear secion of a shoud is already been slowed down.
-
Bore diameter, energy output and the rifle efficiency or in other words its pressure gradient and resulting muzzle pressure are the key factors in noise from an air guns muzzle blast...
Either way a 50 FPE impact from the projectile will be louder than any moderated .25 cal provided the impact energy is over 25-30 fpe.
I think anything over 30 fpe at impact is fairly loud...sub 20 fpe is plenty for garage or backyard shooting for your average sized American suburban yard...for those lucky enough to have some land...well, do as you please.
I own a .25 cal as well (only airgun), and I detune down to around 25 fpe (25.4's going 660 fps) with a simple spring swap (5 lb spring vs my normal 7.7 lb hammer spring)... and with a good moderator this tunes noise output is very manageable from muzzle to impact.
Still shoots minute of mouse within 30 yards.

Good question, thanks for asking.
Because I can. :) I am a physics teacher and I’m bored and I live in the suburbs. It’s just kind of fun pounding the heck out of things - maybe this is stupid but the power is a little exhilarating. Used to shoot crappy air guns as a kid... wanted to experience the other end of the spectrum. Also, just curiosity and being excited about a new hobby.
Also the talon p just seemed to stand out above anything else I could find. Ok price, very good upper end, I can dial it way down with a small valve and quiet it that way. Very easy to take apart, repair, modify. I couldn’t find anything else even close.
Very dialed-down is how it shoot it - feels like 15-20 fpe. Small valve, low tension on spring. But I wonder about small, simple baffles just to take the edge off. Pointless for most users, mainly. Maybe I will make my own.
. I can shoot outdoors on the weekends but must hide my new obsession otherwise.
Next project: home built moderator. It will be ugly but why not. I have some crazy ideas on this
-
well, it's a mostly free country, just be safe. Lot of energy in a small space. Fun I'll bet.

Yep! I have a big garage with an attached studio/workshop space and am shooting diagonally through the door from that room. Full blast is just abusive in that space... fun for a few rounds but kind of absurd. Now, with the small top hat it feels like a different gun. Like a nicely souped-up pistol just a little over the top - quiet, pellet-exploding but not neighbor-panicking, and is super satisfying.
And I hate being stuck in the garage, hate the suburbs altogether honestly but here I am. Give me deep country or inner city, but in some ways the places where they meet just kind of have the worst of both worlds. City life restrictions without all of the crazy entertainment and international stuff that makes cities like a forest to explore... and you still have to drive everywhere, but you are hemmed in by neighbors and technically probably shouldn’t even shoot air guns at all... ok, rant ending. I have got to get out.

Contact Rocker-1 here. Tell him what you want.
I had a situation "once upon a time" to shoot a 12g scatter-gun from inside the garage out the open door.
This was back when I shot competition skeet and shot 2-3 rounds of skeet (full box of shells each) so was well accustomed to the shot cycle...
The sound / concussion on that single "enclosed" shot told me to never do that again. ::)
You being a physics teacher can calculate the pressure and subsequent noise db induced in an enclosed space would be MUCH more than "free air" in an open expanse.

Your avatar gave me an idea. My wife loves wildflowers. So I gave her a lead daisy yesterday. On the other hand, she hates the soundj of my 130 fpe Mini Raptor and 200 fpe .257 Talon/Dor. So LCC's are a must! LOL ;)
She Loved it! ;) 8)

That’s great. The lead daisies are pretty sweet - a tangible representation of the forces involved.
As for calculating the effect of an airgun discharge in the pressure in my garage... I don’t teach that level of physics so I’d need to read the relevant chapter. I really a biologist and I teach mid level conceptual physics to 8th grade students with only algebra or pre algebra under their belts. Been doing it long enough that my knowledge and expertise is kind of specialized! Specialized in terms of giving young minds the foundational experiences to set them up to understand advanced sciences.

I'll second (or third?) the recommendation on the Rocker1 LDCs. They'll withstand 60FPE, based on my own experience. Just enough to take the edge off.
I also have 3 Clague LDCs. They tame down a 140FPE .357, a 100FPE .25 and a 65FPE .22. They are absolutely outstanding.
In addition to that, I have a DFL Ronin on a Pitbull Carbine that is putting out about 153FPE. It is not that effective. :( There isn't that much of a difference when the LDC is on vs. when it's off. I'm still debating whether or not to keep the rifle (that rear sidelever is not my cup of tea), but if I do, it will be outfitted with a Clague.
Oh...and for stupid quiet? I have a stock .22 Bullboss that I turned down to about 9FPE. Seriously...the only thing you hear is the hammer hitting the valve and the spring rattling around. Lol...it's so much fun.

I did well in Science and Physics... But algebra kicked my butt. Got a "D". ::)
A problem with two Un-knowns is STILL Greek to me 40 years later. In my mind it simply can not be fathomed.
-
If you have a 3D printer you can print several great ones for almost nothing.

Dude you can totally handle algebra. It’s kind of something built in to the brain that just has to be uncovered or something. In a weird way your brain is doing it any time you try to solve a problem with more than one possible cause and you try to control all the causes and change one at a time to narrow it down.
It’s usually taught the wrong way (I know because I teach math and have taught it the wrong way for many years but I am starting to get better). Still trying to figure out the best way to teach it but I think algebra is overly mystified by crappy explanations.
As for the two unknowns, you are right that it is different - you have to think of the whole idea of what a solution is in a different way.

Ok which one do I get? Not a simple question - just kidding. But I’d love a decent budget 3D printer. It’s on my list...
Oof this “getting a new airgun” is getting out of hand. Airgun, pump, different sites, enough lead to poison several future generations of my offspring, gong target, new heavy hammer, aluminum breech... this is after getting a hatsan 25 and gamo magnum. Those were nice but didn’t really do it for me.
Last thing like this was a new “multi rotor aircraft” which ended up of course actually being tons of batteries, propellors, specialized tools, video goggles, transmitters, antennas, more drones, more drones, upgraded camera, upgraded electronic speed controllers, upgraded video transmitter, upgraded remote control, more video cards, more batteries, more drones... good lord is this where I’m headed?

algebra, trig, geometry . . . no problem - and sometimes kinda fun
Physics - really cool - lotsa stuff can be figured out
calculus . . . waaaayyyy to abstract for my feeble mind to comprehend
BUT . . . to get back on topic, message Rocker1

What is the correct spelling of rocker1’s username to message him? Rocker 1 or rocker-1 or rocker1? I think I messaged him but hope i formatted it right
I should know how to look him up but I am new and figuring this all out still.
