Title: New to me Seneca Aspen .22
Post by: avator on May 28, 2020, 08:51:00 PM
This is the Seneca Aspen .22 that I won in Travis' avatar contest. As promised, I'm going to share my experience with the gun.
First off, I just want to get the thread started this evening.. most of the good stuff will come this weekend when I have more time.
Travis tells me he is the original owner from PA and the gun may have 50 shots or less on it. It came to me with the single shot tray installed and one .22 mag. The gun had a bit over 1k psi in it. I didn't want to work that hard to pump it with the onboard pump because... well, because I'm old, worn out and flat lazy..  :o So I grabbed my probe from my Freedom and hooked it up to my CF tank. The gauge on the fill hose showed 3300 psi but the gauge on the gun did not increase. I tried again.... nope, no go. However, hand pumping with the onboard pump does increase psi on the gauge. Oh well, hand pump it is until I can figure out that issue. Travis said he never tried to fill it from a tank and had no insight as to the issue. Visual inspection shows nothing in the port to block air passage.
Next, I loaded a single .22 CPUM and fired it out the front door. The side lever felt very smooth as did the trigger. And the pellet sounded like it hit the tree with good power. The thing that shocked me was how quite it was. On high power it seemed to me quieter than my .177 Freedom on low power.... interesting.
Next was to remove the SST and load the mag. Again no joy.... I couldn't get the dang SST out... stuck like Chuck... another question for Travis. He told me it came with the SST installed and never tried to take it out. I had to loosen the 3 grubs on top of the breech and slide the barrel forward a bit to get it out. After some fine adjustment of the barrel back and forth I found the sweet spot so the SST could be installed and uninstalled smoothly. The mag still snaps in without any slop and the bolt makes a nice seal to the barrel with no leakage. The side lever still operates smoothly.
That's where I am now and that's where we'll leave off until this weekend.
Oh.. almost forgot.. I did leave the gun sit overnight and the gauge was at the same pressure in the morning. No leaks ! That's a plus.. my 'no warranty' Freedom had an overnight leak.

If I remember right Travis installed either a shroud from a Mrod or Gauntletand the baffles.

That could be... I remember him mentioning some tuning in the contest thread but he never elaborated. Maybe we'll find out from him somewhere in this thread.

LOL... let's also thank Betty Lou for cutting me some slack on the hunny do list so I can have some time to spend with the gun.

Yes it is, thanks TB.
I pulled the gun out of the cabinet this morning before work. I noticed how heavy it felt. I'm going to have to rethink that heavy CP Adventure Class scope I put on it. Something much lighter. I'm sure I have something laying around that has an adjustable AO for my old eyes.

I weighed my only remaining Freedom that shoots and it weighs right at 10 pounds with lense caps on and full magazine in .177.   Don't know how precise my bathroom scale is... but it does weigh in 10ths of a pound.

The gun was quite loud from the factory so I put a Mrod air stripper baffles and shroud on it now it’s whisper quiet. It came with the single shot tray and because I rarely shot it I never removed it. I never used the probe so not sure on that one. Very accurate gun with lots of features. Enjoy it

Thanks for the details Travis...
I plan to get back into this thread today. First I need to pack up the Freedom and get it shipped out.

We did have a ATI probe discussion some time back, IIR some probes fit the pre pressure tube on the front of the gun, we determined there were 2 different probe styles included with these guns, one shorter one longer.
I will do some checking as to what probe does what. Wayne I do believe found an after market probe that also works.

You are correct... almost... lol
The longer probe came with the gun, although some of the 'no warranty parts guns' did not include a probe. The shorter probe fits the 'smaller precharge tube' and was not included with the original guns. That is because it was not recommended that the end user mess with this area of the gun. Soupyyy (a GTA team member) made both aftermarket probes and sold them to those interested. Matter of fact, I purchased a smaller probe from him when I was digging into the Freedom and just ordered a longer probe from him for this Aspen.
As of just a couple days ago, Soupyyy still has a couple probes in stock. You'll want to contact him in PM. He is fast to respond and ship.

Just finished packing up the Freedom for shipping to the residual winner of the GTA avatar design contest. Headed off to the post office to send it out.
I did include a long probe in that package.

After breakfast and the post office run, I set the shooting table up on the back deck. I then clipped a couple target cards up to the pellet trap/back stop. After waiting for the fog from the a/c to humidity to clear off of the scope lens, I loaded a mag of 14.3 CPUM pellets in.
The psi on the gauge showed exactly where it was yesterday when I pumped the gun up... again, that is a huge plus for me. I took 6 or 8 shots at 30 odd yards to sight the gun. Reloaded the mag and put the next 2 groups of 5 shots in 2 separate ragged holes on low power.
The gauge read just under 2k and reality set in... IT IS HOT AND HUMID ALREADY !!!
This made the thought of hand pumping something less than having a good time. So, at the risk of disappointment to anyone following, I'm gonna stop this merry go round until the probe comes in Monday and I see what the issue with it not filling from an air source is.
Discoveries to this point...
1) It's HOT outside.
2) The gun holds air     YAY!!!
3) Accuracy looks good with cheap pellets    Gotta love that !
4) At this point, the gun seems to be a bigger air hog than the .177 Freedom was.
5) Travis' Mrod baffle mod is mouse fart quite.
Stay tuned....

GREAT NEWS !!
The fill probe I ordered from Soupyyy arrived yesterday. I got a free moment this morning and plugged it into my 80cf scba tank and fill the gun to the max psi of 3300 psi which was the pressure of the tank.
SUCCESS !!!

Now the review can continue. Unfortunately, we have a physical inventory scheduled for Saturday this week at work... that's going to greatly reduce my weekend. But, there is a possibility of this summer's shutdown beginning a week early (this Monday) thereby extending the shutdown to 4 weeks. Lots of 'ifs' here.
So, just to sum up where we are so far.... everything is functioning as it is supposed to.
Happy.
BTW.... the winner of the Freedom should receive his gun today.... hope he is just as happy.
