Title: Scope for HW98=Hawke Vantage SF 4-16X 44mm (1" tube)
Post by: fwbsport on May 28, 2020, 06:28:44 PM
I had AOA put on a Vortex Diamond Back on the 98 .20 and felt the scope was a bit large and heavy for what I was doing with the rifle.

So I had bought a Hawke Vantage SF 4-16X 44mm with mil dots in the center of the reticle for references.

I can safely say this scope is outstanding, one of few "air rifle scopes" I've purchased (two!)

I DID put it in the ZR mounts that held the 30mm tubed Vortex Diamondback simply by replacing 1" rings inside the 30mm ones.  The rifle is a better shooter because of it and this morning I shot my first shot into the target without fuss and continued to knock more with the same precision I got out of the Vortex scope.

The scope has clarity at any range in all the powers, just dial the parallax in and you're set.

This raises a question, we talk about our special rifles but what optics do you use on your "favorite" rifle and why?  I'd like to know if there is a consensus in silent waiting...... ::)

Hawke Airmax, either 3-9x40 or 4-12x40. I very much like the AMX reticles, the Airmax is built and designed for spring piston guns and has a wider field of view than your Vantage, which I also own quite a few of, just not an SF version :)

For a "good" scope I like my Sun TAC IV in 6-24 X 50.  Why?  They seem to be a really good scope and I picked up three while Sun was closing them out.  They have a lifetime warranty but I've no idea how good the warranty is - I've never had a problem.

The HW98's going to get another scope I have on hand, the Leupold 4.5-14X.
I have this on my HW80K .22, and luckily the spare is going into action next.

Weihrauch branded 3-9x40 that came on it, its HW95 field pro.  Scope is good and has target turrets with 1/8" adjustments.  Optics are very good, but the AO is finicky.  I did buy a Hawke vantage 2-7 for a HW50 that I intended on buying, but that plan is on hold indefinitely.  I was not overly impressed with the finishing on the Hawke.  But the mechanics felt solid and the clarity of the optics was excellent.

Hawke Airmax AMX

I have the 2-7x32ao and the 3-9x40ao, both being used for HFT competition.

I also have a Hawke Vantage 3-9x40ao IR MD, but the glass of the Airmax is soo much better ! Even with the 2-7x32 on mag 7 I easily see out to 50-60yrds with a clear view and see the pellet impact on target paper.

For the money, the Airmax can't be beaten.

I think if you combine the HW95 .22 with an Airmax 3-9x40, you will own the most versatile airgun/scope combination for the money out there. And that one, is all you need... If you could own only one  ;)

Just seen a sad review of that airmax at airgun Hunter

Part of the summery.....

honestly don?t know what happened. In preparing for this review, I not only tried one, but I returned that one thinking that maybe it was a manufacturing defect and the scope is normally much better. The replacement had many of the same problems other than the warped barrel. Even the objective lens not fitting properly was repeated the second time.

I don?t know how a company that clearly put so much work into making the HK3012 so good could have dropped the ball on the Airmax EV so badly, but they certainly did.

I put the Hawke SF inside Diana Zero Recoil Mounts, which have a mount a bit higher than a standard ring height mount.   There are no sights to clear with the scope so the LOWEST you can mount a scope is limited to the scope diameter an objective diameter.

I got one the front site cover is seen in the bottom slightly blurred. I got use to it after awhile.
I don't like to go high with the mounts if I can help it. A 40 mm is enough for me anyway.

Enjoy!

That's what I feel!

I try to get the lowest mount possible without seeing the shadow of the front sight interfering with the optical plane.

In reality, HIGH and extra high rings to me are in the wrong direction.  That means to me finding a slimmer scope without the 50mm objective if possible!

I just went to the shop and looked that over and measured
If I removed the the front/ rear open sites I could go 50 mm  the 44mm if I wanted would be adjust the rear site all the way down and get rid of that little blur from it. , but it's sited in so I left it as it is incasse I pull the scope the open sites should be good with out a re zero or with in a click.( ??? ) I'm assuming.

It's so insignificant I don't bother

My HW98 is wearing a BSA 4-16X44 AOEYS Kinda like Momma Bear/Poppa Bear... Not too small, not too big... Just right.

BUT...
The big surprise is the CP 4-16x44  AO TAG currently on R10.
I say "currently" because it is on its 3rd gun. All Springers. Has held up great, love the reticle. The AO yardage is spot on. Best scope under $100 in my opinion.
