Title: New Disco- HARD to seat pellets. Normal?
Post by: Wee Hooker on August 30, 2011, 10:55:37 PM
Just bought a NIB disco in .177 . Everything is good but it can be quite hard to seat many pellets. ( I mean muzzle on the ground and put my weight on the bolt hard.) Yet bolt opens/closes without a pellet with no issues. Wonderig if this is normal/will break in or if anyone has seen this before.

That can't be right. Some others with more experience will be jumping in shortly. It just does not seem right for you to have to use such force to work the bolt.

I have lately seen poor machining on the taper or "leade" of the end of the barrel (breech) that inserts into the action. That misalignment can tip the pellet and cause a hard loading shot. Try tipping the barrel downward and dropping a pellet into the chamber and closing the bolt. Also, some Discoverys load wadcutter pellets hard. Perhaps try a roundnose pellet or pointed pellet.

I wouldn't continue to shoot the gun if it is that hard to close the bolt. I have repaired many Discovery air rifles with broken bolt handles.

Take care,

Big problem somewhere.... either the pellets are mismarked/mixed up and some are .20 cal.... or you have a major problem with the barrel....

Are you sure you're not trying to insert a .20 pellet?

Not right at all I would not continue to use that air gun until I found out the problem  a pellet stuck in thebarrel is difficult to get out in some cases. David

I agree with David an Mike, something is wrong to need that much force to close the bolt, sound's almost as if a burr was left in the breech area or transfer port of barrel? But whatever, SOMETHING is not right as everyone I have shot close's with little effort.

What style pellet are you using? wadcutters? or Domed, pointed?

Good advice already.  If you have to force it, somethings not right.  Either you have wrong-sized pellets or a problem with the leade of the barrel.

I hope you find out what it is and let us know.
