Title: Double sight system on .30cal Hatsan 135QE
Post by: Mossonarock on May 18, 2020, 10:29:53 AM
To use a peep sight on a 135QE, a low line of sight peep sight is needed because the scope rail gives the peep extra elevation in reference to the front sight blade. A Williams FP-GR-TK works very well for this. I found that this peep sight also is low enough that it will fit underneath a scope that is set on mounts that are high enough. I used some kind of see-through mounts for weaver style scope rails made by UTG. Sorry, I don’t know more about them. They were included with a scope I bought and I didn’t use them for that scope. So they sat in a box till now.  The scope I used is a UTG 35 yd parallax with a 28mm front bell. The small bell doesn’t block the view through the peep sight. So, the two sights fit well with each other.

I will say that I had to cut two grooves in the gun’s weaver rail to accommodate the exact position I wanted to place the scope mounts. That’s easily done by first cutting a pilot channel with a hacksaw. Then, widen the channel with a chain saw sharpening file. I think the file is 5/16 inch. Be careful not to get metal shavings into your gun’s inner workings while doing this. After removing the stock, I taped over the trigger and cocking slot with painter’s tape to cover everything.

I haven’t done much shooting with this set-up yet because, after I put it together, I decided I couldn’t stand the poor finish job on the stock. So, I stripped the old stain and am sanding it down at this time. It was in terrible shape. They laid on the stain as thick as paint in order to cover up the lack of sanding the stock received during manufacture. There were still visible saw marks. Really terrible but there is some nice walnut underneath all that. They were clearly manufacturing for quantity and not quality when they made this gun. I bet the earlier manufactured guns were much better made. But who cares?

That said, this scope and peep sight are a nice pairing for this gun, which is a 30 cal. The key to this is that the scope is a 35yd fixed parallax scope with a 28mm bell. That means that anything within 20 yds of 35 yds is well enough in focus to shoot. (Did that makes sense?) The peep sight is good with my eyes out to 30yd. So, for anything too close to sight with the scope, I can sight with the peep. If its too far away for me to sight with the peep, I can use the scope. If its too far away for this scope (beyond 50yds), the arched trajectory makes it not worth trying to shoot it. So, it’s a rather effective 0-50yd sighting system imho. Obviously, this is a hunting set up. Its not for target shooting. (just saying before people go and make namby pamby comments)

I also included a pic of the recoil pad I put on this gun. The OEM pad made the lop too long for me and thus difficult to shoulder. So, I bought a thin Pachmayr pad, basket weave size M, to replace the OEM pad. The screw holes for the Pachmayr pad were in the exact same place as the OEM screws. So, no drilling was needed. Very nice! However, the steel plate in the Pachmayr pad is wider than the wood stock. So, when I was grinding down the pad, the steel was revealed. I colored over it with black marker and that's why it looks a little wierd. I don't know if the small size recoil pad would have a narrower steel plate and still have screw holes in the same place. but who cares?

So, those are the before pictures. I refinished the stock with homemade bee propolis varnish and tru-oil. Here's the after pictures:https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=173128.0
