My boys (identical twins 7yrs old) love to shoot, they have a Daisy Buck BB gun now & they can cock & shoot it pretty good. They have a Birthday in Oct. & they have asked me for a "Real" Air Rifle :o So after some reading I picked up a set of Ruger Explorer youth air rifles ! I can't wait until they get these ! Anyone here gave them a try yet ? They look & feel pretty solid made.

Same rifle as the XS-16, easy to cock and look cool for the kids. Not a real powerhouse but get the job done. The same action etc is avaiable as the XS-12 but with a wood stock. IMHO the 12 has a better barrel....

These are rated at 495fps...so will it be ok to shoot the light alloy & PBA pellets out of the Explorer's ? Maybe give'em a few more FPS ? Whats your thoughts ?
-
My co2 pistol is rated at 360fps, it loves the 177pba pellets and I can deff tell a slight increase in velocity. But that's judging by shoot further away and judging the time from when I shoot to when I hear it hit the box.. I shoot 3 lead pellets and then 3 pba's and the pba's get there a little quicker from 35ft back

I don't think that PBA's or Alloys would hurt a C02 or HPA type of gun. The Explorer is a Springer, I just want to make sure the light pellets wouldn't hurt these guns...they aren't as stout as a regular adult air rifle.

... a tin of premier hollow points is cheaper than 100pba's and predator has come out with a lead free pellet that the price per pellet is cheaper, and they are more than likely much higher quality.
edit. thinkin about it i see it may be for there safety... baracuda greens are heavy enough to prevent damage and are lead free. they're also cheaper than pba's

Crosman has the Alloy pellets, Hollow Points ...250 for around $8 at my Local Wal-Mart, tin says 4g ea. My buddy weighed a few from the tin on his reloadng scales & got an average of 3.5g ea. !
-
3.5 grains is going to damage the internals i would stay above 6gr. thats why i said the baracuda greens, and they're very consistent,my .22 trail will stack em up at 20-100 yards i can shoot a whole tin through one ragged hole.....granted it is about 1-1.25 inches across tho....

Ruger Explorer same rifle as B-16,but if can make a sugestion get them B-12s from Mike Melick over at Best Airguns. My B-12 was tuned by Mike and shoots great,Feels like an R7 without the cost.

I don't think you'll damage the guns by shooting 4 gr. pellets through them. I shot some Crosman SSP through my Crosman Raven, which is a step up in power from the Explorers. Probably 100 fps faster, but probably also not as easy to cock.
The Skenco Poly Match 4 gr. pellets, on the other hand, were the most accurate pellet I've tested in my Raven. Pretty fast too, well over 600 fps.
Your sons are going to LOVE these guns. Be sure to buy a pair of scopes too. The UTG Bugbuster 4X would be perfect, and not too expensive. I have a Bugbuster 6X on my Raven.
I daresay that YOU will love the guns too. The short stock does not impede adult shooting at all.
I think the Daisy Bucks shoot BBs at around 320 fps. (350 advertised) These will shoot 7 gr. pellets around 420 fps, I bet; same as a CO2 gun, but without the CO2 expense. You will have the expense of pellets though, instead of BBs...
Let us know how it pans out, and post a review in the Airgun Reviews Gate please when you've got some miles on them. ;)

my son is also 7 he shoots the ruger explorer with a barska 30 mm red dot scope at 10 meters using crosman primier hollow points
the gun has held up well and is accurate enough for him to learn on (this is his first real airgun) the trigger has a long first stage so when you pull it you can pull it fairly far before it actually goes off the cocking effort is very light my son is able to do it on his own
he has killed a ton of balloons cups of water and pop cans with it ;D ;D ;D and its still going strong
guess i won t mention the doves i killed in the back yard with it while he wasn t looking ;)

If the gun shoots a pellet 450fps that plenty of power to shoot out to 25yd,s an if you get a mildot scope you can shoot out to 50 yd,s with prett good accuracy.

I'll let you guy's know how these work out, They will be getting these on Oct.16, this is the day of their B-day party. Someone told me they picked them up a set of NcStar 4X Air Rifle scopes for the Explorers. We will see ! As for Pellets, the boy's will be using the Crosman Destroyer Pellets ( I have around 2K of these to burn thru). My Hammerli doesn't shoot the Destroyer's very good out past 15yds. So I will let the boy's use these ! I've got a 500pk of the Crosman Copperhead Wadcutters that I'm gonna let them use to break the Explorers in with.
-
PBA ammo is very inconsistent, wouldn't mess with em. Try some H&N alloy pellets?
-
Well...We were out shooting last weekend when one of the levers on one of the Daisy Bucks just snapped right off ! So now they are on to me to get them a new BB Gun...They still have no clue I've got them the Explorers! I can't wait for them to open these up !

I don't know about all that, I'll retire my Hammerli Storm & Gamo Whisper over to them & get myself a nice new Air Rifle !

To answer your question, yes, gamo pbas, raptors, stuff like that are safe to shoot in a Ruger Explorer. They will also provide the most FPE.
-
LOL...I've got a few people telling me it's ok to shoot the Alloy pellets & a few people that are telling me not to shoot he Alloy Pellets in the Explorers !
-
think of it this way, we dont shoot raptors in an rws350, or the 34, and most people dont shoot them in even the rws shutze, they say it will damage the gun, so why would you shoot them in an explorer?
-
Yeah...I guess so ! The only reason I ask is Ive got a tin of the Crosman Alloy pellets that were give to me & I won't shoot them thru my Hammerli or Whisper but I didn't know if it would hurt the yout models since their springs were weaker. The pellets weighed on the scales at 3.4g ea. !
-

The reason you don't want to use raptors in a 1000 fps springer is because you risk damaging your piston seal. In a youth rifle, there is absolutely no problem in using them because the spring is much easier on the pellets.

Ohh lordie!!! Never shoot those in your 1000 fps springers! They will make quick work of your seals.

No I don't use'em in my "Adult Springers" just hated to see them go to waste...thought since the spring the youth modles was less powerful then it might be ok to use them in the Explorers.
-
The Explorers are actually a nice little air rifle, the trigger pull is a little long but it will be fine for my boys to learn with. While they were at school I took the guns out back & set up at 10yds & set the factory "iron sights" . using a rest I can clover leaf the pellets, sometimes putting 2 pellets in the same ragged hole ! I think these will be good guns for my boys to learn with ! If the Air Hawk shoots this good then I might just have to get myself one of these !
-
my blackhawk puts em through the same hole past 50, granted i shoot alot, so its a hole about .5-.75 inches, but thats with about 50+ shots at the target.
