I've been watching the dwindling supply of refurbs and a Ruger Targis Hunter caught my eye. I didn't want the newer gas spring side-latch-piston (Max?) version. I did want the older D34 clone version with center latch piston, T05 trigger copy, and that nice metal dovetail to picatinny adapter. That's exactly what I received. Another gem in the rough from FS.
Rough, because the rifle was already COCKED in the box! That's the way I received it from FS. I have a hard time believing this rifle left the Umarex refurb center that way. I'm thinking I got another customer return that didn't go back for a factory inspection? I accept that as OK for the reduced refurb price.
After a little clean up and lube-tune work the rifle is shooting very nicely. Didn't even need a new piston seal or a shim on the breach seal. The SilenceAir moderator keeps the volume down and makes a good cocking handle, but I'd bet the rifle is pretty quiet without it.
Isn't a new D34 supposed to shoot around 12 fpe normally? This clone is shooting a little under that, probably due to the over "scragged" spring. Regardless, I have no plans to put a new spring in it. Sometimes a sub 12 fpe rifle is just too much fun to shoot!
I may add a replacement D34 spring or equivalent "tuner" spring to my next order from Vortek just to have one on hand for the future. I do have a few other D34 clones which might need a spring someday.
Overall a nice practical air rifle for target and small critter hunting & pesting.
